The Law of Diminishing Returns

  • In this new short video Richard Heinberg explores how - in our economy, the environment, and energy production - we may well be. When previous societies have hit similar limits, they often doubled-down by attempting ever more complex interventions to keep things going, before finally collapsing. Will this be our fate too? And is there an alternative?
This video is the first in a four-part series by Richard Heinberg and Post Carbon Institute. The themes covered in these videos are much more thoroughly explored in Heinberg’s latest book, Afterburn: Society Beyond Fossil Fuels.

You guys have GOT to post more frequently. You can't be a snowball running down the hill if you never start rolling.

Zerkbern If you appreciate this mans message, I highly recommend the work of Jacque Fresco and The Venus Project, along with Peter Joseph and The Zeitgeist Movement. Jacque was on Larry King in the 70's speaking of this train-of-thought and, if you go to the TZM CZcams channel, you'll find a vast array of presentations, lectures, interviews and films, by Peter and the many brilliant members of this sustainability advocacy organization.
      Cheers to a better world!

Saw Richard speak in Melbourne Australia... Seemed a thoroughly genuine chap. You really need a weekly video Richard, nothing fancy, just a weekly vlog would do.
Our world would do well to have more of you in it, across it, more often. You can do that with video... and it can be viewed by anyone any time. Cheers.

    Wonderful thank you!
I’ve seen a parallel with water since we always depended on water from rain, rivers and water bodies only having to drill for underground water as a last resort.
If fossil fuel was the last resort then the question is begging to be asked…
Otherwise we’ll go down as another failed civilisation. Wonderful I like how u explained

Oh right, that's where everybody across the world somehow magically all agree about how resource is to be distributed.
It's where apparently no conflict regarding resource exists anymore, because we have the technology to ration resource in fair and even way.
Works for robots, not for human beings. Human beings are not all equal and as such resource distribution will never be equal.
In a FREE world, the smarter you are, the more likely you are to attain resources of many kinds... Harsh truth maybe, but that is freedom.
      Anything else is not freedom.

While I do not necessarily disagree with conclusions in the video, I had to chuckle at mention of scientist from 60s making predictions with a computer model.
I work with computer models all the time, and let me tell you that they are not crystal balls that predict future. Computer models will give you range of possibilities and also give you insight into how things might work. Computer models are iffy when predicting physical phenomena - like weather - over the next few days, and you can forget about predicting economic or societal trends decades into the future.

    • @VFatalis
      @VFatalis Před 4 lety

The scientists of the 60s Richard refers to are the MIT students who wrote the book Limits to Growth and their model World3 (business as usual scenario) is standing the test of time quite well so far I'm not sure you would chuckle if you see what unfolds past 2020.

@@VFatalis I think a lot of the horrible economic trends and some societal trends following that model is partly due to covid but hindsight is everything I guess. Regardless we are following that same trend.

This video and others about the use of fossil fuels and the resulting Pollution, etc. should be taught in all high schools and colleges in this country. If we can't reach the older generation,we need to reach the young adults. I was witness to the Buzzards Bay oil catastrophe when I lived on West Island, in Fairhaven, Ma. The result of that boat single hulled boat colliding caused so much damage, dead birds, and I couldn't walk my puppy on the beaches for all that spring and summer. I remember the first sign of trouble, a helicopter
going around in circles overhead, then the smell of dirty crude oil and then the workers in their protective gear... it was just one little example of why we need to let go our addition to dirty oil, gas and coal and let's not foget, dangerous nuclear power plants. The one near where I live should be shut down...it is old, it is a replica of the one in Japan...remember that? What dirty world we live in. And it's all man-made. Are humans more stupid than the apes they came from? What good is a bigger brain when you don't think right..
What good is a world when you can't breathe clean air, drink clean water, grow food in
soil that is not sprayed with pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, and all those chemicals.
What good is it to introduce GMOs in our food supply.
I see most humans as totally insane if we continue to live this way.
We have no other home, it's here, not on Mars or the Moon.
We need to show respect for Mother Earth and forget worshipping a fictional god who
doesn't even exist. Grow up humans! Get smart. The future generations are in question as it is..Giving kids drugs, pills, etc oh my gosh, what will happen to our DNA, are they creating monsters? And the epidemic of Cancers, now that is a wake-up call.
Cancer in children isn't normal nor is it normal to take chemo, radiation and toxic drugs
    to cure it.
Chemo and Radiation are carcinogens...they cause cancer.
I turn away from all of this mess.

Didn't find this very compelling. Generalizations of economics like this just don't account for advancements in technology, and by most measures (including GDP and mortality rate) humanity does in fact enjoy a higher standard of living, year over year. The infinite complexity of the universe has to be dealt with, but not in a way that blows our entire system apart. I do not think an anti-human approach to shrinking population or advocating for "simplicity over complexity" is a good idea. We need to grapple with the ever-increasing complexity of our universe at a rate which does not destroy us. But to retrograde or stagnate is not the way towards discovery. And we absolutely need to discover more than we currently know, for our health, and for the health of our descendants, or else quality of life will never improve (starvation, disease, natural disasters). Who would want to stop advancing and evolving in the face of such lethal forces?
