    The Citroen e-C4 X and the Renault Megane E-Tech are both medium-size cars aiming to persuade switchers that they don’t need the bulk and weight of an SUV. But while they both are around the same price, they do like to do things a little differently. The Megane E-Tech is designed to deliver a sporty drive while the Citroen majors on comfort.
    The Megane Techno tested costs a not insignificant £38,495. That’s £1,000 more than the Citroen, but it does have a lot more power at 217bhp. That’s also a little more than rivals such as the Cupra Born and Kia Niro EV and delivers a 7.5 second 0-62 time. There’s a 60kWh battery under the floor which gives an official range of 280 miles.
    This Citroen tested is the Shine Plus, which costs £35,495 and is slightly longer than the Renault. It comes with a 50kWh power pack and a motor producing 134bhp, some 83bhp less than the Renault. It means the 0-62 time is more leisurely too, at 9.5 seconds. The smaller battery means less range as well - 221 miles versus the Renault’s 280.
    Join Nicki and Nicola as they crunch all the important numbers and put both cars through their paces on the road. Which French fancy would you opt for? Perhaps you have an alternative? If so, let us know in the comments below.

    I’ve had a Megane Etech equilibre (entry model) for a few months now. Fantastic car. It just gets on with the job and is very well screwed together. Renault have come a long way. Having it on PCP masks the cost somewhat too. I love it ❤️

    I've had my Iconic in White with Black roof for 7weeks now. I've driven it on long journeys, and when driven carefully on Eco, I get between 280-302 miles range (although don't go above 57-59mph😉).
    What really helps is that, unlike almost every other EV, the Megane doesn't affect it's range when the blowers/heaters are on, as the power doesn't come out of the EV batteries. It comes out of the car's normal 12v battery (like it does on a ICE car). Only the AC does.
    But don't forget, the Megane is one of the lightest EV's on sale (lighter than a Zoe). Helped by aluminum and Carbon Fibre construction. Only the Mini and Fiat 500 are lighter.
    Plus don't care anout rear visability. It has a wide-angle rear view mirror camera....Brilliant!!
    Plus Google is fantastic! You cannot beat phone tech! It's the most up-to-date around, constantly updated.

    Good comparison. Renault is a great brand from my experience renting a car in France. My favourite EV is the MG4 at the moment for people on a budget that don't want a big car. I heard the fast charging is a bit slow but I don't go on road trips that often.

      Weird you mention the MG4 the interior of the Megane is actually not much different to the MG4 in terms of passenger space also although the Megane looks bigger - park beside one in an MG4 and the only difference is the Renault is a tad higher and a couple inches thats it. Big 20 inch wheels are not lovely; they have expensive tyres and harsh ride, and the Megan's back window is tiny.
    The Citroen fails on the Dad test because there's no way geriatric me can reach anything at the back of the Citroen boot, short of dropping the back seat. Oh, and there's no electric seat adjustment on the Citroen's comfy seats so I had great difficulty reaching the seat slider mechanism. If comfy seats are the major selling point for this car, those seats should have electric adjustment with at least two memories so Mr and Mrs Geriatric can instantly select their comfiest positions.

    Fun fact: the categories of climb in bike racing (Cat 4, 3, 2, 1, Hors Categorie) are predicated on which gear in a Citroen 2CV you would need to be in to get up them. Lots of stranded 2CVs on the side of the road up the Col du Galibier back in the day, for example. I support bike races & events in my Hyundai Kona EV 2019 model, and Sport mode on Regen level 3 (with paddles!) is ideal for zipping in and out of groups of cyclists against oncoming traffic. I think the Megane would be even better for this. Sorry Citroen.

      Hmmm, there is a reason the C4 is being discounted. And it is still just about the same price as an undiscounted MG4. Even at that price, I'd still prefer the MG, even though I have had plenty of Citroens in the past.
      I just can't get over all the European brands resisting the demand to going over to dedicated EV architecture, it really is madness. The only market that is definitely going over to non-ICEs, and they are still dragging their heals. The ONLY Euromaker that has produced their own dedicated EV is VW. Unfortunately, the implementation of VW's iD range is not that great, but it is the only EuroEV that has the dynamics. I know that BMW tried it with the i3, but they've now apparently abandoned anything else.
      Meanwhile the Chinese companies are churning out dedicated EV architecture as if it was going out of fashion.
      I really want to support European manufacturers, but the way they're going at the moment, I see no way that I can justify getting anything other than Chinese.
      Having just written that, I realised that the Megane is dedicated architecture. Well done Renault.

    I think the Renault with the 60kWh battery is better. Relative small battery with charging up 130kW, means 20-80% time is minimised. The 280 mile range also means that even in winter you should get => 200 miles at 70mph on the motorway, which is 4 hours driving prefect tine to stop for a recharge and toilet/food break. Then set off again at 80% for another 3 hours driving or 150 miles at 70mph on the motorway, giving a driver's range of 7 hours driving and 350 miles and that's Kent to the Scottish border.

    Be very careful with the E:C4 and C4X. Like it's E2008 brother, the range is an absolute nightmare. I've been driving a EV for 10 years now and recently had a hire E2008 and my sister has a E:C4.... I can get 240 out of the Megane in the summer, even driving in eco with the air con off, I couldn't get more than 150 miles from the Citroen and 135 from the Pug. I can't tell you why, I've got rather good of getting good range from EV's now, but with those it was a total fail. The E2008 also has hideous mile/kw efficiency too. Not good.

    In my opinion, the cost of these cars, coupled with a shockingly poor charging network (UK) means that an ICE is still more logical. Now that it appears that we haven't got the 2030 hard stop, I just can't see me ever buying an EV, not at least until ownership is more practical and the initial cost isn't too high. I like the content you produce but I await, with interest, the day that an EV is a truly logical option.

    • @gazza595
      @gazza595 Před 8 měsíci +10

    • @FormulaWhine
      @FormulaWhine Před 8 měsíci +4

      That "2030 hard stop" is just a misnomer, typical government spin. It was always 2035 anyway. In 2030, ICE could still be purchased until 2035 as long as it had some form of hybrid function - mild, full, or plug in. All that has changed is that the hybrid deadline has been removed; the full deadline for 100% EV remains at 2035 as it always has.
