    Could you expand on the culture of each dorm? Like whats the party dorm? which one is super quiet? and which one is super loud at night? ... also, which ones are close to the gym?

    • @katherinevlamis_
      @katherinevlamis_ Před 4 lety +9

      sure! a lot of these are stereotypes built up over the years, and they aren't always true; your experience is really what you make of it! but I'll just write a characteristic or two about each freshman dorm/suite!!
      birnkrant: known for being both academic and social/friendly, right next to leavey library and evk, right above the 24 hour starbucks, not super loud, I think birnkrant has access to new north's small gym
      new north: known for being more of the party dorm, right next to leavey library, evk, and the 24 hour starbucks, has a small gym, generally louder at night (on the weekends) and can be known for being kinda gross/having weird smells BUT a lot of our friends who lived there never complained about it
      pardee: very similar reputation to birnkrant in terms of culture, but generally seen as second tier/not as nice, right next to doheny library, a couple minute walk from evk and starbucks
      marks hall and marks tower: also similar to Pardee and birnkrant, but generally seen as more like third tier, just a bit older, also near doherty library, a couple minute walk from evk and starbucks
      trojan hall: known for being the "worst" dorm in terms of quality and location, I think it's the oldest, still fairly close to doherty, evk, and starbucks but it's definitely the farthest out of all the dorms on the freshman quad
      parkside: has a nickname of "Parkside dark side" because it's on the far corner of campus and generally quieter, right above Parkside dining hall, pretty far from the heart or center of campus, suite style living without a living room
      fluor: right next to Lyon center (the gym), generally a bit quieter too since it's on the far edge of campus, somewhat close to McCarthy dining hall, a lot of athletes live there too but it's a good balance, suite style living with a living room
      McCarthy: only for honors students, right above McCarthy dining hall, suite style living I think with a living room, kind of far from most things on campus but great location for things in the village, very close to the village gym
      let me know if you have any other questions!

    Thanks for making the vid! I'm gonna be a freshman at usc next year and I can't decide between Birnkrant and Fluor tower. I was wondering which one would you recommend? What are the pros and cons to both?

    • @katherinevlamis_
      @katherinevlamis_ Před 4 lety +6

      hey, no problem! congrats on getting in!! I have a lil special place in my heart for Fluor because most of my friends that I made happened to live there (and they all loved it)! both are great, but I'll highlight a few pros and cons of each:
      Birnkrant
      - PROS: close to a lot of basic classes (like GEs), close to the dining hall, close to other freshmen housing, 24 hour Starbucks, close to Leavey library for studying, you get super close with your whole floor
      - CONS: communal bathrooms and showers aren't the best, no AC (which isn't a huge problem!), less space technically, not a big study lounge, not as close to the gyms
      Fluor
      - PROS: you get super close to your suite, a lot more space + AC (dorm and a living room area + a sink), a bathroom with two toilets, two showers, and three sinks shared by 8 people, close to a Starbucks you can study in, a nice study lounge shared by the whole floor, very close to a gym
      - CONS: not as close to basic classes, the nearest dining hall is a bit farther away, it's more secluded and quieter (but some people like that!), not as close to other freshmen housing, it's harder to find food late at night that's nearby
      Let me know if you have any other questions, sorry for the long comment!! (:

Ledges outside the windows had a visible layer of what had to be settled freeway exhaust dust that adhered to the building... Was so bad that the exterior paint just kinda peeled all the time and sloughed off the building.

    • @katherinevlamis_

      yes!! very similar in location, but in terms of reputation new north is known to be more of the party dorm while birnkrant is a social dorm with less of the *intense* partying (it's still super fun, it just isn't as loud, doesn't smell as bad on average, etc.). also new north doesn't have elevators! both are great depending on the atmosphere you want though (:

    • @katherinevlamis_

      if you’re in a dorm, you’ll have a shared bathroom with the rest of your floor, separated by gender! a lot of the dorm floors are girl only or guy only, but birnkrant has coed floors so it has two separate bathrooms! at least in birnkrant, each bathroom has 4 stalls (one of them is a handicap stall with a shower), another shower, and 3 sinks! it doesn’t sound like much but i rarely had to wait to use the restroom or shower! although they could be cleaner a little more frequently in my opinion lol

    • @katherinevlamis_
      @katherinevlamis_ Před 4 lety

I had some friends in Pardee that absolutely loved it, so I feel like that's a good choice! when Claire and I were deciding which dorms to put on our application, birnkrant and Pardee were reallyyyyy close because they both have the same vibe! we just liked birnkrant better because of the Starbucks, close dining hall, close to our closes, etc., but if you're in Pardee it only adds like an extra minute walk or so! I think birnkrant might be ~slightly~ newer but tbh they're all kinda old. there are tons of little differences that I could list out, but Pardee and birnkrant are both solid choices!!
