Plenty of people talked about Lewis losing as he turned up in South Africa too late to acclimatise to the altitude. The whole fight week was mostly this.
LOL for saying the better fighter won as well. Seriously, LOL. Rahman was no such thing. He won only due to Lewis not preparing properly. Nothing else. Even with the advantage of knocking Lewis out going into the rematch he couldn't compete. Rahman got knocked out even worse and in ironic fashion. In the build up, Rahman came to England and did promotion for the fight riding in a open carriage with a crown on his head. When Rahman's head landed on the canvas after getting knocked out in the rematch, his head landed perfectly by the huge crown on the canvas.

2001-04-22 - Carnival City, Brakpan, Gauteng, South Africa.
Lennox Lewis, UK (38-1-1, KO's 29) vs Hasim "The Rock" Rahman, USA (34-2-0, KO's 28).
    - Undisputed Heavyweight Championship of the World / Lineal, WBC, IBF, IBO -
    # Lennox Lewis's 10th world title defence in his 2nd reign: 1997-
    # Hasim Rahman was world ranked: Top 5# by WBC, IBF & WBA.
    # Lewis was a 20-1 favorite.
    # Lewis was 35 years old - Rahman was 28 years old = 7 years of age difference.
    # Lewis had the height, reach and experience factors on his side - Rahman had the youth factor on his side.
    # The championship fight was billed "Thunder in Africa".
    QUOTES:
    "No Lewis-Tyson! No Lewis-Tyson!" - Hasim Rahman.
"I definitely want the rematch. Hasim Rahman is the champ today. He got lucky! The second time around Hasim Rahman is going to go." - Lennox Lewis.
    BACKGROUND:
While Hasim Rahman had been in South Africa for about a month to prepare for his big title shot, Lennox Lewis was there only half as long after taking time off to film scenes of himself fighting WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko in the remake of "Ocean's Eleven" in Las Vegas with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and more.
Lewis had no high regards for Rahman's boxing skills and despite knowing Rahman packed power, he fully believed he would never be able to land any such punches.
Lewis had for a long time been hungry for fighting his long-time era rival Mike Tyson, but despite numerous lucrative offers to Tyson, the fight was yet to happen between them.
That fight had been put on hold mostly becaude Tyson apperently "never fealt fully ready" and also because of a clash of TV contracts-Lewiswas with HBO, Tyson with Showtime and how the split would be made was very unsure at the time. "Winner takes all" was something offered, but Showtime did not like that idea. Arguably they themselves must have had doubts Tyson would not win over Lewis.
    AFTERMATH:
The loss was regarded as the biggest upset loss in professional boxing since Mike Tyson was KO'd in defeat by James Buster Douglas in Tokyo, Japan back in 1990.
The fight really put questiones in mind of there would ever be a Lewis-Tyson fight now. How would Lewis be rated? Was he done?
Lewis felt moe embarrased about the defeat but accepted that he lost by a knock-out. At least this time it was a legit one in his book as he could not beat the 10 count unlike his first upset loss to Oliver McCall back in 1994, where he was not allowed to continue despite having beaten the count. He avenged 3 years later that loss to McCall by stopage in 1997.
There was a rematch clause signed in the contract for this championship match and Lewis activated that claise immeadeatly after his loss. Lewis believed in heart and soul Rahman was "lucky" and that his world championship crown was just on loan. He would win back the crown and KO Rahman in the rematch no doubts.
Rahman sihned a promotional contract with infamous promotor Don King afterwards and King's team was not interested in having the rematch to happen. King instead was trying to set up a 1st title defence for Rahman against then top contender David Izon or get Mike Tyson himself in, but Lewis stood his ground and threatned with taking it to court if the rematchg clause was not honored. The WBC and IBF sided with Lewis as well since Rahman was not a mandatory challanger.
The rematch would happen in November 2001 and Lewis promised evreyone that he would knock-out Rahman and KO him earlier then he did to him.

I think,Lennox accepted to receive the blow and given wide access to the opponent, but it's a confusion.

Lennox Lewis was a great boxer but I think that overconfidence played a trick on him. It still seemed quite incredible to me that he lost that fight and by knockout.

Just think what a young hungry Tyson would have done without all the dirty politics that involve sport. Lewis vs Mccall 2 was one of the most obvious fixed fights of all time. Lewis still could not put him out of there when Mccall had already quite clearly quit.

I always say: Tyson stopped moving and obviously never landed 'the one punch' and his mind was severely distracted. He got his ass beat. However, rewind the clock to 1990. Even Lewis said he wouldn't get in there. Mike missed about 5 great fights when he went to the gray bar hotel. But, history is history.
