    Man gotta love when a company responds to legitimate criticism with “dumb question bro” always a great sign of a quality brand. Especially for one with no track record

      Yep. Even if the Chromatic and ModRetro's other products wind up being close to perfect, that type of thing makes me worry a LOT about how bad things could be if anyone had to contact ModRetro's customer support.
      That issue aside, that type of response would have gotten someone reprimanded (maybe even fired) in any other industry. ModRetro just shrugging it off is pretty alarming.

      Saying "bro" makes me think they are a 12 year old writing a CZcams comment.
      That and their sassy attitude just shows they are milking senior citizens with Game Boy nostalgia.
      PS: I was 9 when the game boy released, but I don't have any nostalgia for it. The screen was crap.
      Senior citizens love the Game Boy, and are spending all their social security checks on terrible ideas like this.
      The Game Boy supports elder abuse and so do these retro poison projects.

  • @meatpockets

    $200! That’s insane. At that point you might as well get an Analogue. Funny Boy GBC seems like the best value option, or just by an Anbernic for even less. The non-plus RG35XX is like $40.

    • @RogerEssigArtist
      @RogerEssigArtist Před 14 dny

      They don't have pixel accurate screens & colors though, so don't get them for accurate GB & GBC experience. Also they're made of plastic.

    • @mr.selfimprovement3241
      @mr.selfimprovement3241 Před 13 dny +2

      @@RogerEssigArtist _"Accurate"_ is subjective here. 🤨 Even a Analogue Pocket (which I own) is not accurate - the only thing 'accurate' is the original systems with the original plastic bodies, abs buttons, and those old screens. If you are not playing on those, then I don't want to hear anything about "accuracy" - who care's if some chooses a Anbernic, Modded GB/A, or Analogue Pocket? Regardless, they are great ways to experience the same games.
      This isn't 2014: The emulation on the modern Anbernic (software) device, and FPGA solutions like Analogue pocket (hardware) of the games themselves is very 'accurate' to how they play on real hardware. The screen is what makes all the difference, and the fact is that every one of them is a upgrade over the original ones in terms of color and brightness.
      It seems to me that these newer devices are not trying to be 'accurate', but rather 'faithful' in spirit while IMPROVING certain facets.... something you cannot do AND be completely "accurate". You either want the original experience, or something better. So people should buy whatever you can afford and like the form-factor and screen of... and stop listening to elitists' moonlogic. No one cares. 🤦‍♂

    I have both a Pocket and an IPS-modded GBC, and honestly, I prefer the modded GBC. The Pocket is a bit heavy, I don't much care for the 4-button layout, and I swear there's noticeable input lag on original Gameboy games. Plus it struggles reading my original carts where the modded GBC never has an issue.

    • @SurfNinjas
      @SurfNinjas Před 11 dny +1

      Same. I have a modded GBC and a modded GBA SP. Way more expensive to buy both of those than it was to buy my Pocket, but I find myself playing them way more often. The GBC just feels nicer to hold and I appreciate the fact that I can just put my SP into a pocket or bag without having to worry about adding extra protection to it.

    Surprised that people are so defensive of this product in the comments. Yeah, it's a premium product, and it will probably sell decently well because at the end of the day it's just a Game Boy Color, but I had pretty much the exact same thoughts as Ian when I first heard it announced. It absolutely does not need to exist and does not offer anything new compared to what is already available on the market.

    Analogues shipping isn't '$20 flat' on the east-coast - or so it wasn't for me when I ordered the pocket last year, Mega SG years ago and Super NT years before that. Frickin' Analogue typically has charged me between $40-$50 shipping every-time I've ordered from them (just for the standard shipping). I think I paid almost $300 for the Analogue Pocket after shipping and taxes (my state has their own internet tax too).

  • @TheRedWisdom
    @TheRedWisdom Před 16 dny +1

    Honestly this seems custom made for me. I have a modded gba that is my main driver for GB and GBC games. Been holding off on the analogue pocket because it feels overpriced for it's build quality. And the way the product is spread out between like 8 addons bothers me. I have Been eyeing the Funnyplaying FPGA Gameboy kit. But heard there issues with their cores and you have to assemble it yourself which I lack patience to do.
    To me Palmer Lucky has a proven track record if releasing hardware to the market and running companies. I wouldn't call myself a fan boy but having his name attached is no cause of concern. I'd rather gamble on the Chromatic over the Funnyplaying FPGA kit.
    This fit the exact niche of a product I am looking for. I just want the best possible product to play game boy games. I would have preferred a slightly larger screen like the analogue pocket but I do like that it comes with an inbuilt video out port. The price is very reasonable even compared if you go for a modded Gameboy color of similar quality.
    If I wanted a device to play a variety of games. I'd just buy a controller to use with my cellphone and run some emulators. The only reason to buy products like this is to get the BEST possible experience. Though I agree the focus on correctly saturated pixels seems a bit silly and is a solved issue with any mod kits you can buy for your original GBC. I will do my homework before pulling the trigger but it seems interesting. Especially with the extra games as they seem cool but I've been let down before with indie GB games.

    I didn't realize palmer lucky is behind this: major turnoff. Also I get wanting accuracy insofar as the fact that emulators introduce graphical glitches/corruption and sound errors that you may not be able to fix or have to fix with very specific settings in endless menus. Its especially present in PS1 and N64 games. FPGA's accuracy means you bypass a lot of those problems and don't have the psychological affect of wondering if you have the perfect configuration among hundreds of settings. But at a certain point I find the hyper obsession with getting every tiny micro detail 100% accurate to be the realm of irritating nerd pedantry; its just "um actually-ing" by people who care less about the art and games themselves and more about the console. "Um actually the GBC's color was like this, um actually the gameboy had a pixel structure like this."
    The analog pocket just has an ultra high quality screen, its so good that the colors look a bit better to me than the switch oled when comparing the same game. The only thing worse on the AP is it isn't oled so it lacks that perfect pitch black (which looks so great in pixel art games, especially schmups like NES Gradius with space backgrounds or nightime backgrounds in castlevania). The Analog Pocket, Vita, and Switch OLED also all have this presence to the pixels where everything just looks great and never muddied togather. Sometimes things almost look like they're popping off the screen like its a stereoscopic display, its not an effect I get with emulators on an oled iphone oddly where everything is more muddy despite the oled. I want that high quality, honest display of the game as it really is more than something that perfectly recreates the physical properties of a original GBC screen or whatever: I play games, not consoles.

  • @Robots0verHumans
    @Robots0verHumans Před 16 dny +1

    AP ist so expensive and never available, I prefer gaming on Steam Deck and alternative on an OLED modded GBC or my Retroid Pocket 2s.
    But regarding Chromatic: if the guy is a billionaire, then why does he insist on prepayment for the pre-order? That's always suspicious.

    He just wanted to make the best possible version of the original Gameboy Color, which was his favorite childhood system. He’s not trying to upgrade the experience, he’s trying to recreate the nostalgia of it all. Palmer doesn’t care if it makes money. If I had billions to play with, I would absolutely want to create a perfect FPGA NES/Super Nintendo combo player that looks awesome with the most random expensive details I could find

    This whole discussion is so off base. Complaining that the Chromatic isn’t gonna be able to do Turbografx games on its screen is absurd. It’s a Game Boy, that’s what it does. It doesn’t need to do anything else. I have an Analogue Pocket and it does everything and plays every console you could want while also being ergonomically bad and not very fun to play on. I usually leave it docked for that reason. The Chromatic is offering up a really neat way to play Game Boy games that I bet will be a better experience than a Pocket. You guys are being pretty uncharitable and it seems like you have a bone to pick with Palmer more so the product.

      @Revariance Před 12 dny

      @@otterdonnelly9959 I don’t see how $200 is an unfair price. Nintendo themselves would probably charge around that for a new officially licensed Game Boy. The Chromatic has a magnesium alloy shell and PBT buttons, a scratch proof lens and a screen engineered from the ground up for it, not just a BlackBerry screen from China. The components are better than anything else on the market and the price reflects that. People can make comparisons to the FPGAGBC or Anbernic-type devices but this thing beats the pants off those.
