Artificial Life. The battle of clans

  • Artificial Life. The battle of clans
    A new version of “Artificial Life” for modeling Evolution.
    A made-up world with made-up rules inhabited by cells with a genome and the ability to give birth to other cells.
    Sometimes mutation occurs and one random digit in the genome changes to another. And then natural selection comes into play…
    The script was written based on the results of the simulation, so the story could have been very different.
    In the video, emphasis is placed on the “socio-political” interactions of the organisms. To achieve this type of interaction, the organisms were divided into clans.
    Although there really isn't any interaction here (there are no built-in opportunities for interaction and recognition of one’s own species), the general development of the world creates such an impression.

      We saw something very similar when the land bridge between North America and South America formed. North America had much larger predators than South America did at the time so when they started to cross the newly formed bridge south bound, it caused the extinction of several species that were unable to adapt. Can't remember many of the details beyond that though.

    I love the narration!
    I think it's interesting that in the final epoch, ones things somewhat reached a stable ecosystem, we can see a few distinct species that are capable of surviving together. Meanwhile, many species which existed early on, before the presence of single-celled predators, are nowhere to be found. Early on we see a lot of creatures that grow rapidly and cover all available space, while in the final epoch, we see many "snake-like" species that grow in a straight line and only occasionally turn or branch.
    I wonder if a similar phenomenon happened in Earth's evolutionary history. Perhaps during the "Great Oxygenation Event" when the first oxygen-producing organisms evolved and nearly killed all life on Earth.

    Btw, I see the "unicellular predators" less of an immune system, and more of a bacterial system (since there's good bacteria). The bacteria in our gut helps break down molecules so we can use the stored energy.
    But then, when an unfamiliar bad virus or bacteria comes along that we're not used to, it can wipe an entire people (like the Native Americans and smallpox).

    You need to bring this to a bigger scale. Something crazy like 2^14 x 2^14 (16384 x 16384), and if your computer can't handle that, then try to turn this program into something that runs on your GPU. I would also love to see you give different species names, and write a little program that makes a chart of how they evolve, or just a table of how they evolved and you turn that into a chart. Then we could see what exactly happened as far as evolution is concerned, and as you would go through the events that took place on the massive grid like you did in this video, you would keeping referencing back to that evolution diagram to show how the evolutionary pressures made the different species evolve into others.

    Seventh Clan had a strong start but the introduction of the single-celled predators really hit them hard. Though they lost their previous might, they had the strength to endure, and even the dominant First/Fifth Clan couldn't wipe them out.
    All hail the Seventh Clan, for one day they shall reclaim their rightful throne as Kings!

    That was great. I love music and game design, but also i want to say some words of improvement to video. In the video there was some point i cannot catch quickly enough and the numbers of clans started to missmatch who is who. I would love to a little longer video with transitions being more often going to all 8 sectors view and zooming back to clan of interest. Also shifting sectors was confusing sometimes and it would be great to be signalized somehow. Also I found the explanation of world difficult and needed some time of constantly rewatching video to catch so i think it would be great to put more focus on that. The most difficult was species description, it would be great to see some examples at begging how every cell works.
    Thank you again for great video!

    Neat project on invasive species, predation, and symbiotic/parasitic relationships.
    How did you implement reproduction/ selection in this model? And do organisms have sensors that tell them about nearby spaces, or are they blind?
    Again, cool stuff!

    • @gabrote42
      @gabrote42 Před rokem

      Reproduction requires the creation of a dormant Seed cell on a branch. When the organism dies, it shoots off around 2d10-1 spaces, depending on genome, and it becomes a single sprout. No idea on sensors though. I would assume that there are none

    That was really cool! I wonder if the dominance of predators could be abated somewhat if plants could develop cells that store organic matter or charge etc, that are themselves unaffected by those? Then a predator munching on the storage cells would have a good chance to OD if the plant focused on bioaccumulating toxic levels in these storage cells.

  • @zekehatcher2196
    @zekehatcher2196 Před rokem +5

    You should create an experiment where it's the same thing as this, however there is a chance when two unique species (From the same clan or not) interact, instead of destroying each other, they combine into a new species, where some genomes are dominant and some are not dominant, with mutations activating some non-dominant genomes at random.

    • @EliasHasle
      @EliasHasle Před rokem

      Yes. Genome crossing/sharing could be activated by contact between a certain kind of cell, mediated, e.g., by some heritable (and, hence, evolvable) genome similarity threshold.

  • @samuelthecamel

    would be cool if you could add some code hooks to in your event loop that checks the zone data and comes up with some words to describe if its growth , new variations ,destroyed or eaten cells etc... then feed that text into a image generator like like stable diffusion with the prompt words and create images with time line tags , so you get like a visual story of generations . There would probably be hippy generations , and dark ages , wars and utopian ... almost like a comic or graphic novel of the life span of the AI world
