      Hey! Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoy the videos. I'm still using my S2+ actually. It's so upgradable, I upgraded the driver to a FET with 7135, so it can be powerful and have a very low moonlight mode, it's pretty good actually. But there's some good lights out there that don't need you to mod too. I actually got a Sofirn Q8 Plus, would be fun to do a review and some testing on that thing, so I'll try to do that! Thanks for the message! Hope you have a good day!

    This is some quality review. It's very difficult to find videos that go beyond "I like this light, it's bright" but yours is top notch! I'm thinking about a grey S2+ with just 3*7135 because at 1050mA it runs for >3h on 'high'. Most people that have 8*7135 at 2800mA or 6*7135 at 2100mA mention they actually use the medium mode more often and that the 'low' mode output of 30-40lm is too bright. I figured going as low as 4 or even 3 would be a better compromise since I'm not trying to fit the maximum number of lumens into my pocket but have something to use daily which includes walking around the home at night not blinding everyone else etc. A cool T6-3B tint for me

      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      +wojtekimbier Thanks man!! Appreciate the positive comment. That's great to hear, everyone wants something different from a light, and the great thing about this is that it is fully customizable, from the factory or by yourself, you can even program your own modes into the Attiny13A, or add more mosfets if you're handy with a soldering iron, 11x for 3.85A of blistering power. I added a 2750K XML2 on a copper sinkpad ii, because I'm after warm white with lots of output. I actually mostly use high, but it's nice to have medium and low, I would like moonlight too, which you can get if you replace the driver with a flashed firmware like from mountain electronics, that would be the best cuz you could have 2.8A when you need it, but very low firefly or moonlight too. The PWM of the custom firmware is 18khz and isn't audible. The stock Convoys make some noise so I think it must not be that high, maybe 8-10khz?
      I think your set up would be good too, if you don't use 2.8A no need for it. It gets way too hot at 2.8A, 70 degrees celsius at room temperature actually, so only good for short bursts of use. Running at 1050mA at full would be a lot more practical, and wouldn't have the low audible whine when it's dimmed(I don't mind it, but some might). I like the warm color temp, since you can use it to light up a room and it looks quite nice, but if you're not after that, cool white works well, it stands out if you're on the sidewalk too, so cars can see you as a pedestrian easily. Everything has it's place.
      Let us know what you think when you get it!
      Cheers,
      David.

      You're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you appreciate all the detail. I've also added more content in my reviews, this was done in 2015, in the last 2 years I've added more items to the review process. Check out my latest video on the UT02 if you want, it's a killer of a thrower! czcams.com/video/tnJjGxKwfiU/video.html
      Rofis, the manufacturer must have liked my reviews, so they've sent me a G01 tactical light, I'm reviewing that right now.
      If you're into modding, I'll also be making some mod videos to make the most powerful compact thrower, and also the most powerful S2+. I've actually had 9.40A going to an XP-L2 in my S2+! believe it or not, it was very bright, but I think it peaks out at about 7A, any more and the output doesn't go up much.
      Cheers!
      David.

    I don't recommend running at max for long periods if not strictly necessary. It gets really hot and batteries do not like heat.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 6 lety

      Thanks man! Ya, the LED efficacy decreases quicker at higher operating temperatures too. But for the number of hours we'll use it, I don't think it's a significant amount. I recommend the Sanyo 3500mAh battery, it can handle some heat, but like you said, prolonged high temp operation isn't good for it's life span either.

    David, Great review! I was researching the Lightstrike 360 which is being advertised on FaceBook here in Japan for a price of about $500US! Seemed really high (duh). Found your comparison video and you sold me on the Convoy S2+. Ordered it from eBay and it arrived from Hong Kong to Japan in just at one week. No instructions so I searched some more and found this video. I'm very impressed. It will be used as a short-time light while camping and I'm looking forward to many hours out of it. Again, thanks for taking your off-time to do these reviews.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety +1

      Hi Gary!! You're welcome, my pleasure, it's fun stuff and I'm glad it can help. I go camping a lot and a great light goes a long way for sure. Sometimes you need high power to light up the area, or low power to find things and navigate, so the convoy works great. Don't forget the good 3400mAh batteries, and you're set!
      Enjoy, and thanks for the comment and feed back.
      Cheers, David.

    Every flashlight review should also have a treadown section where more enthusiast users/viewers can see the inner constructions of the light.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety +2

      Thank you!
      I agree, I'm glad you appreciated the teardown of it, I think it's an important part of a review, you can't really see how well it's made unless you inspect the components inside and check the quality of parts.
      It's definitely worth a lot more than $13, I wouldn't even mind paying $30 for it, but don't tell the manufacturers and distributors! Keep them competing so we can get these at a great price. lol. My friend ordered 2 as soon as I showed him the light and he played with it, my other friend ordered 4 of them!
      That's funny cuz I still just have 1, if the UV light doesn't count.
      Cheers!
      David.

  • @JohnSims3
    @JohnSims3 Před 8 lety

    I have one of these in red, awesome light. Then I ended up building one from a host with a 7138 X8 driver, an XP-L HI U2-1A MCPCB and it kicks butt! Not much more than the stock S2+ with an XM-L2 LED....

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      +John Sims Ya, the red one and the green one are the new finish options, they look awesome. How does the distribution look with the XP-L? It's a smaller size than the XM-L2 so I'm thinking it might be a tighter beam pattern, but hard to say.
      The XP-L HI looks like a great LED, but I haven't started using them yet. With your U2, and 7138 x 8 driver, you should be getting about ~967 lumens right? If it's 334lm/1050mA. That's pretty good.

  • @DinnerForkTongue
    @DinnerForkTongue Před 5 lety

    I just had to revisit this review and drop some info:
    If you get the S2+ from Simon with a Nichia 219C and smooth reflector (and Biscotti, obviously), it's a classy hi CRI piece of gear with a much better balanced flood/throw beam than you'd expect from anything this short. Mine is at most 4x7135 since the driver has a retaining ring instead of solder blobs attaching it to the pill, but it's a good one and I love it.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 5 lety

      Hi, that's a good combo for a high CRI light, thanks for sharing!
      Some new stuff I've been diving into: Sofirn SP10S, it has the Samsung LH351D in there, it's really nice, with a CRI of 90.
      I'm liking the SST20 with 2700K too. It's CRI of 95 and can output high lumens. I haven't tested it, but hopefully as much as an XPL2.
      I ordered the S2+ from Simon with the SST20. Need to play around with it. It comes with a smooth reflector and is a small LED too. So should give you great distribution as well.
      Lots of new stuff out there! Can't wait to play around with it.
      Cheers!
      David.

  • @DinnerForkTongue
    @DinnerForkTongue Před 7 lety

    I got me an S2 for the sole reason that I don't have unprotected batteries or the budget to justify getting more than my protected ones right now. It's in the 4C tint and has only three 7135s, so not exceptionally bright, but I got other lights if I want more punch. This is just for the beam color and extended runtimes.
    Now to save up a bunch for the entire L6 kit! lol

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 7 lety

      The 4C tint is what I get too. Great color. Could be warmer though, I've got 8A1 2750K in my S2+, it looks very close to incandescent, but still a little cooler, more like halogen(an MR16 maybe).
      The 3 x 7135 is great for longer runtimes, is it on the biscotti firmware? They actually have a lower mode in that than the stock fw, I calculate that it lasts 388 hours on moonlight with the biscotti firmware. Much better than the stock fw which only gave me 24 hours. The biscotti also doesn't keep blinking when it gets low, it just keeps running the light as long as it can, which I find to be a great feature. I run unprotected cells, and if I want to drain it, I want to drain it. I don't like computers telling me that it's time to shut off the light. LOL. Damn machines! I'll tell you when it's quitting time.
      I took out the L6 tonight for a spin, WOW it is bright. It could use a little more field angle, but I think I can solve that by putting a diffuser in the middle of the flashlight, gonna try it out and see how it works. Could make a better thrower and flooder out of the thing.
      Cheers!
      David.

    • @DinnerForkTongue
      @DinnerForkTongue Před 7 lety

      Naw, it's on stock "Blinky" firmware; I didn't get it from Simon himself since his store is still closed and he's the only one that'd put Biscotti on an S2, all other retailers only have the C8 on Biscotti. I do want a Biscotti S2, but then it'll be 7135x8, all others make the _low_ low modes it much too dim.
      I've made a spreadsheet calculating the current drain, lumens and runtimes for each #x7135 variety common on the market (x3, x4, x6 and x8), for both Biscotti and Blinky's modes. If the linear proportions I've established are correct, my 3x7135 S2 will drain 52.5, 420 and 1050mA on its three modes, and that on a 3400mAh 18650 (the only ones I own) will be 64.76, 8.1 and 3.24 hours respectively. Even if this is not 100% accurate, it's dang good for a super-budget torch if you ask me.
      (as an additional, the spreadsheet tells me that a 8x7135 Convoy should run for 24.3 hours on Low with a 3400, much as you found out. So hooray for that!)

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 7 lety

      Oh I see.
      I've purchased the Biscotti drivers separately and been upgrading my lights slowly. I really like that firmware over the old on-time memory ones, I was never a fan of the on-time memory.
      Ya, the moonlight mode that gives you 1474 or 388 hours isn't really that useful, because it's so dim. But sometimes that comes in handy sometimes too.
      It'd be cool to start programming our own drivers, and then we can adjust the modes to our own liking! One day.

    • @DinnerForkTongue
      @DinnerForkTongue Před 7 lety

      *****
      You actually can, right now! Take a look at the BLF thread regarding the new Convoy C8 and on the last page there's a lot of taking about using Linux and a USB adapter to mess with the hex codes of the driver for the best results.
      I myself will wait for the day manufacturers include a PC connection for programming like Nextorch did, meanwhile I'll stick to what comes from the factory :P

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 7 lety

      I don't think they'll make it easy to program the Convoy lights tho.
      I ordered a chip clip so I can connect my Arduino to the AtTiny13A, I'll see if I can mod it, but I gotta learn how to program first too ;o) So that's a work in progress.
      Once you can program it tho, you can do anything you want, like personalize a light so that it SOS's your name, or something like that, your imagination is the limit!

      I like the warm white XML2 I put in there, 2750K. They have high CRI 2700K SST20 LEDs that you can use if you want. Convoy sells them on AliExpress.
      I would recommend the Astrolux X5/X6 driver that has temperature control for that too, great upgrade to the S2 if you're looking to do that.

      My friend who goes on solo hikes has had crappy flashlights go out on him before, leaving him in the dark. Now he's using the Convoys and good quality Sanyo/LG/Panasonic batteries, he used to use the garbage Ultrafire flashlights and batteries, many broke/failed on him. He knows the importance of good flashlights (but won't pay $200 for them) now, so he's using Convoy. He's always very prepared now, spare flashlights, backup batteries for his GPS, cell phone, rescue beacon, all that. Lol

    DAMN, this is the best flashlight review or really any review I've ever seen. All I wanted to know is, "does yours get as hot as the freakin sun?" Check. That scared the bah-jeebus out of me the first time I used it. My a1s by Atactical is 1500 lumens on turbo and only gets warm, so I thought this would be luke warm. Nope! Damn near dropped the thing as I heard my fingers cookin on that tip. Anywho, I'll put on some thermal paste(thanks!) and hockey tape on the tail.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 6 lety +1

      Haha, thanks man! Ya mine gets freaking HOT, and burns your fingerprints off in a hurry. It's pushing a good 2.8A to the LED, so it's expected. All my lights that are around 10W and this size do the same thing though. The Zanflare F1 pushes 4A, so it gets even hotter, but it has the turbo timer so you gotta keep pushing the button, I think only 30 seconds on "flare" mode. I've got some astrolux BLF X5/X6 drivers that throttle the output based on the temperature though, so it's pretty awesome, a fet driver with a 7135 for low modes too. I've got it in my Convoy C8 and it works awesome to keep the temperature at whatever you want to set it to, you can program it to maintain whatever temperature you want. I got mine off aliexpress for $7, and the first one worked so well I ordered 2 more. I highly recommend that driver if you want a "safer" high output light.
      The guys at BLF know what they're doing, and they've definitely hit the nail on the head with the X5/X6 driver. It's 17mm so fits the convoy C8 and S2+ perfectly. It's winter now, so I use mine as a hand warmer, works like a charm!
      Cheers!

      +Chaitanya Shukla That's awesome!
      Ya it's a great quality light, and I like how they keep the diameter just big enough to house the 18650 battery, even all the way up to the reflector, by using a high quality reflector, they still achieve great OTF lumens with it, so it's the best of both worlds, small and compact with insanely blinding output. Nitecore make good stuff, but Convoy has them beat in quality and price.

      Thanks Victor!
      Cool, thanks for the heads up on the great lights.
      I just took a look at the Thrunite TN12, and it looks like an awesome light, I like the side switch, 0.4 lumen mode, and the 1100 lumen output. It's great they're using the XPL V6 LED, probably the best single celled LED out there right now in terms of OTF lumens. Can't get much better than that if you're looking for high OTF lumens. I am looking for a good side switch light, so that might be the one to get!
      C8's are awesome, I've got the Convoy Clear C8, with their new firmware, and I gotta say, it's a wicked driver, programmable, and exactly what I'd want in a light. Thorfire C8 looks good too, but the Convoy might be the way to go if you want an XPL HI and those programmable modes. About the same price too.
      Have you seen the Convoy L6? That's an awesome big light too. Everyone should have one IMHO. Here's my fairly new review on it, if you're interested(czcams.com/video/h6KlvFASrQ4/video.html).
      Cheers!

      +David Sunshine You're welcome. I have never owned a Convoy but I feel this will change soon. The tn12 is my favorite flood edc torch while the thorfire is a great 1 18650 thrower. I used to use the old fenix tk22 and sunwayman t20cs but they are pricey and I'm always looking for best bang per buck. Btw the aaa thrunite ti3 is always on my keys. Vic

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 7 lety +1

      The Convoys are good bang for the buck, but I think the Thurnites give you more options and some more features, like the 0.4 lumen firefly mode, Convoy's new firmware only gets you down to about 1 lumen.
      Convoys cost less, but you don't get the extra features like you do in the Thrunite it seems.
      Same with the Fenix, I think you get a little more quality and features, at an increased cost.
      But if you're looking for a more budget light, then the Convoys are the way to go for sure. You could get 3 Convoy S2+s for the price of one similar Fenix torch.
      Ti3 looks like a great keychain light too. My keychain is already too big, so I don't have a light on it, I carry the M3 in my pocket instead. I've got a Leatherman PS4 squirt on my keychain, so it's too heavy already. It's a great multi tool to have though.
      The reason I haven't gotten into Fenix and Thurnite is simply the price, I like the price point of a $13 S2+.

    Mr. Sunshine, thank you Sir, for all of your hard work in the making of these videos. Concise and to the point. Excellent Sir, very well presented.
    Sir, since I have not been able to secure the flashlight you rated as #1 in your videos, I have fallen back on the second model of a powerful flashlight: SKYRAY KING, with a CREE MI-L T6 (6000 lumens x 3 leds). Have you ever done a review on this flashlight yourself, that I may be able to review?
    In searching for these flashlights, the 6000 lumens one, I am being given my choice of going ever higher on the lumens, all the way to 30,000 lumens! The only difference, from these flashlights, from the 9000 --- to the 30,000 lumens are the number of LEDs on their heads. I am afraid that the 30K one will probably explode upon being turned on, or could be unmanageable because of the heatness. Could you please guide me on this purchase?
    Thank you, Sir.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety +2

      Hi Oscar, you're welcome.
      Each XML can only output about 1000 lumens if driven to the full rating, but they probably run it a little less, so 3 x XML would only produce about 2400 lumens. They say 6000 lumens, but that's nearly impossible without putting the LEDs on copper and having massive cooling.
      If you want a lot of light output, I would go with XM-L2 LEDs. There's an 8xXML2 on Aliexpress, tidd.ly/1616cbf4 - $58.59, that's pretty expensive though, I would only get that if I were going to upgrade it for maximum output, if that's not a goal, I would just get the cheaper one with XML instead of XML2.
      A lower cost light, with high output is the 7 x XML for $20.91, that's a lot cheaper, and the output is still pretty good stock.
      If I were to buy a new high powered light, I'd get the Convoy L6 now, it's not compact, but it's high powered and well priced, (tidd.ly/7c8738fe - $53.03), it's a very high quality light, it's big also, so you can run on it on high for a longer period of time before it gets hot so for about 15-20 minutes, the SkyRay King gets hot in about 3 minutes so it's not as useful. It needs good 26650 batteries, Gearbest has 2 of these 5000mAhs for cheap, (tidd.ly/77f9ae - $10.24). If I didn't have a 26650 charger, I'd recommend getting the On the Road M3 Kit (tidd.ly/715582bd - $25.59), which comes with a nice little charger, then I'd have a small and powerful EDC light, and a large flashlight, and have everything I needed in terms of flashlights.
      Those are my recommended purchases.
      Hope that helps.
      Cheers,
      David.

    Thanks David so much for understandable vids on led lights. I am old school ( you know candle power) . It is hard for me to understand and compare candlepower to led. You have by passed that and given spot on examples. Thanks
    NOW FOR MY request. I have a farm . It is needed to have a spot light that I can see well hundreds of yards away (1 to 3 hundred yds or so) Is there any way that you can do a comparative tutorial like this for the best bang for the buck on led spots that wont break the bank? I have needed one for yrs but because of the extreme price i have and ignorance in the field I have held off. Your advice and info is something I would value in buying . Thanks again Reggie

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety +1

      Hi Reggie, you're welcome, and I'm glad you enjoyed the videos and could get a perspective of LED lighting from it. I don't have many throwers, but what you want is a thrower, as that will provide you with a narrow beam angle, allowing you to illuminate things much further away than a light with a wide beam angle. If you Google "budget thrower" you'll find a bunch of information on models that are good throwers. For a single LED light, the C8 XPL might be good, but I haven't tested it. The C8(Convoy model) performs well, and in my other video I use a cheap C8(Ultrafire, it doesn't have a good reflector) to hit the building that's about 200 yards away, in the video "A Complete review of all eBay flashlights". With that said, if you compare the 7X XML2 skyray against the C8, you'll notice if has a much wider beam, but still provides about the same illumination on the side of the building, it's because it has way more power and lumen output, but distributes that light over a wider area, so the actual light level on a single object is similar. It's good for searching, since you'll illuminate a wider area, I think that's what would be useful at a farm. At the end of the video, "Skyray king - how to make the brightest flashlight", I think I actually do some demo of it at the farm, and maybe at the end of some of my other videos.
      I don't have any throwers, I tried to order the Convoy L2 with a XPL LED, but gearbest said they were out of stock of the one I wanted. You can try that light if you want, it might be a good thrower, but I'd probably just get the 7x Skyray if I were you tho, it lights up a big area with a large amount of light.
      Hope that helps!
      Cheers,
      David.

  • @TheTrailGlider
    @TheTrailGlider Před 8 lety

    I liked your tear down and tips on tail-cap maintenance etc, but have to point out an obvious exaggeration - You say in the opening text the light delivers 39% more light than wf501b using the same led and driver - but later in the video you mention the color temperatures are different so they are not the same LED. Also, since your smartphone light meter may not have the same sensitivity at all color temperatures you have yet another uncertainty. Lastly, the text later reveals the wf501b you are comparing with uses 2.4A circuitry instead of 2.8A. No wonder you get more light at 2.8A...
    Still looks like a very nice light and I will be buying one. I will buy it not because it is more powerful, but because the thermal design of this is where the brass pill threads into the aluminum is much better than the P60 style lights, because it is more compact, and because the beam looks very nice despite the reflector and head being smaller than P60 style lights, and lastly but not least because of reports seen elsewhere that 20mm TIR optics can be used in place of the reflector.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      Hi Morten,
      Good observations.
      To explain further, I actually put in a 7135x8 driver into the WF-501B, along with a Cree T4-8A LED, which was the same set-up in the Convoy S2+. It surprised me that it put out that much more light.
      You're right, the color temperature makes a huge difference when reading it with the light meter, the cooler temperatures get much higher readings, when read at the same current throughputs, the efficacy is also generally higher for the higher color temperatures as well.
      Ya the S2+ brass block is awesome for thermal dissipation, I've run it on 5.2A/20W continuous without an issue, after adding more copper to the back and a lot of thermal grease. It is shown in my Convoy Inferno video, czcams.com/video/Uzjv_zwr8Ng/video.html, check it out if you're interested.
      I've put 10 degree 21.5mm(tidd.ly/4f762b74) optics in the S2+, but it requires shaving off about 0.5mm around the edge, a little bit of work, but I couldn't find the tight beam angles in a 20 or 21mm size.
      This 5 degree reflector is pretty good too, with an XPL HI LED you'll get more throw, if you really want throw, that's the way to go, tidd.ly/27eaaf70
      But The 10 degree optic for an XM-L2 is great too, if you dedome the XM-L2 with a razor blade, it'll provide more throw, I've done that and it seems to make the hot spot really intense.
      Cheers,
      David.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      Also, to explain the 39% further, since lux is almost linear to light output, I assumed from reading a 39% higher lux level that it was 39% more light output.
      If you use this photometric calculation tool(www.visual-3d.com/tools/interior/), you'll see that doubling the wattage doubles the lux levels bascially, so you can assume that a resulting 39% increase equates to a 39% increase in power input and light output, for LED's it's almost linear, efficacy(lumens per watt) drop a bit when increasing current, but not too much, and it's offset by a higher efficacy at a lower current throughput as well, so the figure they give, 116 lumens/watt, is probably an average, and fine to use in calculating LED light output.
      I think the 39% increase is attributed to the reflector quality.
      The WF-501B's reflector isn't as smooth, and actually scatters a lot of light, and probably absorbs some light. It's worth upgrading to the S2+ in my opinion, or a Convoy C8/XPL HI if you want throw.
      Cheers!
      David.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi,
      Ya there's lots of options for sure!
      Still a great light tho. I personally like the SST20 with 2700K, but they might be too warm for most people. It's only max of about 1000lm probably. If you want over 2000lm from the S2+, then the SST40 at 5000 or 6500K is good. If you want a normal bright light, 5000K will probably be for you.
      But I would look at getting 3000K or 2700K if you like warm white lights, which is what we usually use indoors, except the kitchen which is usually at 4000K.
      Once you have the color temp figured out, I'd try to get a driver with the modes you like. I personally really like temperature control too, it's important for safety and comfort while using it. Otherwise it can just get too hot. So the 4 mode driver has temperature control and can give you about 1800 lumens with the SST40 at 5000K. You'll want a good Samsung 30Q in there for max out or the 35E the longer runtime.
      With that all said, there are new lights out there will new features that you may want that the S2+ doesn't offer: if you want a good side switch light with usb charging, the Wurkkos FC11 is awesome, it had a magnetic tail but no ATR. The Sofirn SC31 Pro is good too, but doesn't have a magnetic tail, but does have ATR, it has the SST40 so can do 2000lms. The batteries that come with them are high quality and probably Samsung cells inside. I bought a Sofirn SP40 and Wurkkos FC11 and have been impressed!
      If you have a charger and don't want usb charging, then the S2+ is still a great deal though.
      Cheers!
      David.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 3 lety

      Damn. Ya that part of the design is lacking. But it's pretty tight in there. The MCPCB gets pushed into the copper pill by the reflector, so if the pill isn't screwed in tight, the MCPCB will pull away and burn out the led. I haven't had that issue, but I could see it happening. I screw the pill in really tight with my needle nose pliers(filed down tips). I should probably make a tool to screw it in properly though. That would help stop the thing from loosening.
      Once you replace your led, it should be fine for many years if screwed in tight. My buddy has been using his for 5 years in the film industry heavily and it's been great!

They want so much money for Thrunite and I don't know enough about Flashlights to know if it's worth all that money. This Convoy S2 looks perfect for what I plan to do which is Kayak camping.

      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety +1

      Thanks man! Appreciate it!
      I don't do a review on the C8, but check out the last video in the On the Road M3, I basically compare all the lights, you can see which one works best, for camping I would take a convoy s2+ and some spare 3500mAh Sanyo cells, and be mindful of the runtimes, on high it'll get hot and be drained in 1.5 hours or so. If you have a fire going you won't use the light much, on low it'll go for 24 hours so no issue if you use it on low, should be plenty.
      No need to spend more for a thrunite, the Convoy is pretty good already. You might get more options like ultra low or moonlight with the Thrunite but I don't use those.
      The C8 is a good thrower, but I find it bulky for pockets, that's why I prefer the S2+, but it depends on what you want, throwing is what some people like, a C8 with an XPL HI will let you light up a cabin on the other side of the lake. In the M3 video I show how well the C8 throws with an XML2, it'll be even better with the XPL HI.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      +AussieMachine Thanks man! Haha, the advertising on the X800 is very good, but if you do some research before you buy, you'll soon see it's at a different level than a Convoy S2+ in terms of light output and quality. Look into a SoShine E4S to charge the battery, and double as a back-up charger, it'll take 3 hours to fully charge it, but even a dedicated 18650 charger isn't that fast. If you want a real charger, Nitecore D2 or D4 is nice, if you don't need the bells and whistles, check out the i2 or i4. (All from Gearbest)
      I would warn you to STAY AWAY FROM EBAY now, as most of the devices on there are all fakes/counterfeits of low quality, the nitecore chargers you get from there will be fakes, and Nitecore's page warns of this. It's unfortunate, but Ebay batteries, flashlights, and chargers authenticity is in question these days. My Nitecore i4 is a fake, works fine, but doesn't have genuine Nitecore parts.
      The Convoy S3 is actually an older model than the S2+, the S2+ can use both protected and unprotected cells, and the tail has been made to accept the wrist strap, and still be able to tail stand easily. It can also easily have a pocket clip added if you want(From fasttech).
      I recommend buying all batteries and lights/electronics from gearbest if you can, they have genuine batteries, and great prices. I bought my Panasonic 18650 3400mAh and LG 3500mAh batteries from there, and have been very pleased with them.
      Hope that helps! Cheers,

    ok David ,well actually I have a ljk flashlight with XML t6 led (lattice bright, it is a fake CREE LED)it's too similar x800 Shadow hawk but is so cheaper hehe it cost 160 pesos (about 10 USD dollars with generic charger and battery), I also have a ultra fire c8 XML u2 led with battery and charger for 9 dollars and I ordered a convoy s2+ bluetwo weeks ago I hope get it soon ,but I can get batteries from GearBest, they cannot ship to Mexico, I only got a imr 18650 2600mah Samsung pink from a external power Bank that I broke hehe I hope this one will be enough to feed the convoy

      Oh cool, you have some pretty good lights already.
      You'll like the quality of the S2+, it's much better quality than the Ultrafire C8, I have that one as well. I reviewed the Convoy C8 and it was much better than the Ultrafire C8 too. For the small increase in price, I think Convoy's worth it. The 2600mAh should be fine for the S2+, it only pulls 2.8A.
      Have you checked Aliexpress, their prices for the Sanyo 3500mAh aren't bad either: tidd.ly/89af768f

      Awesome! This is still my go utility light. I've added a side magnet and tail magnet, and it works great when I'm working on my car! I used the On the road M3 for EDC, because the s2+ is to big and heavy for dress pants, but each have their purpose. Optionally, you can replace this with the Astrolux X6 driver, which has temperature control, that's nice since it controls the temp by reducing output. If you're interesting in that option, you can look into upgrading to an Astrolux X6 driver for about $7, you gotta put it in yourself tho. With that upgrade, it'll have features that even the most expensive lights don't have; very customizable and the temp control can be set to whatever you like. If you want it to stay luke warm, just set it at a low temp, if you want it a little hotter, you can set it at a higher temp; you set it by turning it on, and turning it off where you want it to be at max temp. But you can use the S2+ just fine stock as well.
      No need to change the color temp or anything, if you're ok with that.
      Cheers!
      David.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 5 lety

      Hi! Thanks for subscribing, hope you're enjoying the videos!
      You ask a great question, and unfortunately, the Black doesn't come with a metal button. My friend wanted to buy one with a metal tail switch, but only the coloured ones come with the metal tail switch, the rest come with just the rubber button.
      You could ask the manufacturer(Simon) and see what he can do. Maybe he can make one for you? Worth asking at least. I haven't checked, but maybe the button could be pressed out of the other tails and pressed into a black tail? Would be an interesting mod. I'll have to give it a shot. If they don't make it, and you don't want to mod it, I would suggest the Blue S2+ tho, it's still one of my favourite lights.
      You contact Simon through his store: convoy.aliexpress.com/store/group/Convoy-Flashlights/330416_254412389.html
      BTW, if you want the next best flashlight, they've created a 21700 version of the S2+, S21A, it uses a Tesla cell, which you can buy from Simon too, and it'll give you 5000mAh(Instead of 3500mAh in an 18650), it's only slightly bigger, but gives you that extra 1500mAh, the S21A also has thermal regulation. Check it out here: www.aliexpress.com/item/33026858558.html
      Unfortunately, they don't have a metal tail switch neither, and it can't use the pocket clip or tail magnet(which I really like in my S2+).
      The S2+ is still a very good light, if you don't need the thermal protection or the extra capacity.
      Cheers!
      David.

    good review...What about protected batteries? For example Panasonic 3400 protected. Is there some diference in led output if used protected battery?
    thank you

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      Thanks man!
      Protected batteries will cost a little more than unprotected, and will add a little resistance to the system.
      They will work fine at 2.8A, in the Convoy S2+.
      The Panasonic 3400mAh protected cells can do 7A or so, they say, so at 2.8A that's fine. You won't notice a difference, but if you want to supercharge your flashlight, it will start to show it's limitations.
      For that, you'll want 20A or 30A rated cells, like a Sony VCT5 18650.
      The Sanyo 3500mAh unprotected is really nice tho, lots of capacity and good up to 10A continuous.
      The HG2 is good too, 3000mAh and up to 20A continuous. I guess it depends on what you need.
      There won't be a difference at the upper end of the voltage, but the lights will perform better with the higher amperage batteries, since they have lower internal resistance.
      I would buy the Sanyo 3500mAh and call it a day.
      If you want protection, the Panasonic 3400mAh is a great deal too. I wouldn't bother with the other batteries unless you're looking to increase the output of your flashlight beyond 3A, like I did in my "Convoy Inferno" video.

    Thanks for the video! I have the light grey Convoy S2+ and I was wondering if I can switch the tail switch to a metal one. Do you know if they're universal? I've read only certain colors of the Convoy S2+ are able to swap tail switches.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 4 lety

      Hi, you're welcome!
      I measured the rubber tail opening, it's 15.97mm I.D., and the metal tail switch is 15.19mm O.D., so it won't work.
      You could add the rubber button to the metal tail switch by machining it bigger, but can't go the other way, cuz you'd have to build up the metal. You could JB weld it in, but it would look ridiculous and probably break down the road.
      My friend wanted a black S2+ with a metal tail too.
      So you're right, we're only stuck with the anodized colors that have the metal tail switch.
      You can email Convoy on Aliexpress and request that Simon make some runs of black S2+s with metal tail switches, he would be open to that. I think there's a market for it. You're not the only one who's asked.
      The metal tail switch is really nice, I still use my blue one!
      Cheers!
      David.

    Nice video! Do you prefer using protected or unprotected cells in your flashlights?

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      +Seraph I prefer unprotected cells, since I try to push many amps through my batteries, but I wouldn't mind the Panasonic 3400mAh protected cells, there's 4 of them for $18 at Gearbest on sale, and I think they can push 6A, whereas I only need 5A in my SkyRay King pushing 85W, so they work for that as well. However, if you want the most power and most capacity, the LG 3500mAh unprotected cells are the way to go, they cost you $6 for a set of 4, but if that's what you're after, I suggest those. If you're just in for a good battery, the Panasonic 3400mAh works fine.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 7 lety

      Hi, thanks for subscribing! You could do some mods to the tail switch to make it momentary on, but that's not the best way since you'll lose the ability to keep it on. If you get a new driver you can program it for 100% on only, that would be the best, then you can keep it on.
      You can also get a pressure switch and rig that up if you really wanted. For momentary on. Is it for a pistol or rifle? For a rifle I can see a good pressure switch being the best.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 7 lety

      I don't know if you'd be interested in a pistol light, but this one seems to work very well: czcams.com/video/Q61dRwjnqp8/video.html
      I did a comprehensive review on it, and only after testing it's hot spot, did I realize it was hotter than the other lights rated at higher lumens, S2+ included. So if it's something compact you're looking for, this might fit the bill.
      Check it out. I got it sent to me by Rofis for review, but I'd buy one in a heart beat since it works so well.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 7 lety

      Anytime!
      The official Convoy store on Aliexpess got some new pressure switches in(I think a few months ago I saw them pop up), I haven't purchased one or tried it out, but apparently it's supposed to be of good enough quality that Convoy will sell them. A couple years ago we asked Simon why he didn't have any, he said it was because he couldn't find one with good enough quality. So I assume it's good? If it's anything like the Convoy lights, it's probably pretty good and worth the ~$8.
      If you want the best throw for the compact size/light weight, I would recommend the Convoy C8(tidd.ly/d7bf850b), I haven't done a review on it yet, but you've probably seen it in comparison to other flashlights like the L6 or UT02. That one comes with the new programmable firmware, where you can set it to 100% only(mode #12), as you can see on the programming table.
      You can buy a pressure switch, and install it yourself to the tail: tidd.ly/408132d4
      He does sell the pressure switch already installed to a black tail, but the C8 with new firmware linked above only comes in Clear/silver, so you'll need to buy the black C8 with the XPL HI(Better throw), and specifically ask for the new biscotti firmware, I think he charges $1.50 extra for that new driver.
      Then you can buy the pressure switch with it already in the black C8 tail, no soldering required: tidd.ly/904a5e9d
      I'd prefer a black flashlight on a rifle.
      If you still want the slim S2+ on your rifle/shotgun, then you can order the S2+ from Convoy, and ask for the $1.50 upgrade to the biscotti firmware. Something like this black one: tidd.ly/b135365e Make sure you get rubber tail, I think the metal one won't fit that pressure switch grommet.
      I'd ask for the 8x7135 biscotti driver in the notes when you order, or just message them on aliexpress, they response very quickly.
      Then you can order the pressure switch and install it to the tail. I checked the C8 switch, and it's exactly the same as the S2+ switch, so should be a drop in fit, both say model #HGJ-16 on it.
      Sorry I haven't tested those out yet, but there's so many new things coming out in the flashlight world, I can't keep up to speed.
      EDIT: Also, thought of something else, the 7135's are controlled by the positive gate/trigger, so if you jumper (with a 220 Ohm resistor to limit the current)between the positive LED terminal and the mosfet's gate, I think it'll force a 100% on mode, bypassing the controller, and making a more robust light, with less parts to fail, as you're only using the 7135s for current limiting instead of the controller and 7135s. If 100% is all you want, this is an easy way to do it, if you want programmable modes, then the Biscotti driver is the way to go.
      Hope that helps!
      Cheers,
      David.

    How do you activate the memory function? Seems like every time I turn it on a different brightness level come on . Isn’t it supposed to remember the last level I left it on ?

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 6 lety +2

      Hi Varun,
      Yup, it is supposed to have memory of the last mode you used for over 4 seconds, so you've gotta stay in that mode for about 5 seconds before it will be memorized. (I assume you have the 3/5 Mode ON-Time driver)
      It's on-time memory, as opposed to off-time memory, so it works a little different from other lights.
      If you're still leaving the light on a certain mode, like LOW, for over 5 seconds, and it's still going to MED or another mode the next time you use the light, there could be a defect with the driver.
      In that case, you might try asking the seller what they can do for you, Gearbest has warranty, and Aliexpress does too.
      I've actually had some drivers arrive defective, so it could happen to others as well, unfortunately.
      Try troubleshooting and seeing if it works as it's supposed to:
      1.) Test NEXT MODE by turning it on the low mode for 0.5 seconds. Leave it off for a couple seconds(doesn't matter how long, it doesn't know how long it's been off for), and turn it back on, it should go to the next mode, i.e.: Med.
      2.) Test MEMORY MODE by turning it onto low for 10 seconds. Leave it off for a couple seconds, and turn it back on, it should go back to LOW, if it doesn't, then memory mode is failing.
      3.) Test GROUP MODE CHANGE, turn on low, and wait for the blink at 5 seconds, when it blinks, turn off the light. It should be in the other GROUP MODE, with strobe/SOS, or without strobe/SOS.
      If it does all of the above tests as expected, then it should be ok. If it fails to do perform one of the tests, you can let the manufacturer know it has failed to perform as specified.
      Hope that helps!
      Cheers,
      David.

    Hiya David! Sweet review! Are there any advantages to the concoy C8 that you know of in comparison to the S2+? Or should i just not think about it and go with the s2+?

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      Hi! Thanks! The C8 has a bigger reflector and so it has better throw, a smaller beam angle, good for longer distances. The cooling isn't as good, since it's using aluminum instead of brass(high in copper content), but that's ok if you aren't modding it for more power output. The larger head makes it harder to pocket carry too, the S2+ had a small profile and is one of the easiest to pocket, making it a good every day carry, you never know when you need to look behind some equipment and pull out your light, so it's nice that way. They both has the same modes and power options, I guess it's the size and beam angle that just really differ. I don't use the C8 since its beam angle is so tight, and isn't optimal for working on the car or uses indoors, or walking outdoors. But its a great light if you're trying to spot things in a big back yard or something, the quality is right up there with the S2+. Some people like the throwers, and it's definitely good at that.
      Hope that helps!
      Cheers,
      David.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      +Slapabeardon You're welcome. Oh ya for sure the S2+ will do well for festivals, not much need for throw I wouldn't think. Don't forget a good battery too, 3400mAh or 3500mAh to maximize your runtime. When it's low, it'll drop to low and blink, but that's annoying so best to avoid it. Too bad they don't blink every 30s or so, but I guess they don't want you to kill the battery, but I would rather have light when I need it, than a useless light. Can't have it all, unless you get custom programming I guess.
      Check out the description for some ordering information.
      Cheers,

      It will run hot at 2800mAh, but you can just run it on medium and it won't get hot.
      If it's for protection then you'll probably want the new firmware in there, are you keen on purchasing a new driver and installing it yourself? If so here it is: tidd.ly/817a2be4

    Hello David, nice review!! One question, does the Convoy S2+ have mode memory? I mean, when you turn it on, does it come with the last mode used? Or does it jump to the next mode every time it is turned on? Thank you!!

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 7 lety

      Thanks man!
      You have two options.
      Stock Firmware: It has on-time memory, so if you have it on a mode for longer than 4 seconds, the next time you turn it on, it'll go to the same mode. People prefer off-time memory though.
      Biscotti Firmware: It has off-time memory, so if you have it off for longer than half a second, it'll go to the next mode, otherwise it'll go to the last mode used. I like this the best.
      To get the biscotti driver, you gotta order it from the Aliexpress convoy store and ask for the biscotti firmware in the notes, I think he charges $1.50 extra, but it is worth it: tidd.ly
      The programming of the biscotti is shown here, where the C8 comes with the biscotti stock: tidd.ly/db7a1a97

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 7 lety

      Hey, you're welcome! That's great!
      Ya, the on-time memory also makes sense, because if you're on that mode for longer than 4 seconds, it must be a mode that you like and want to use.
      Ya, you can run over it with a car(But it'll get scratched), it's a tough light. Just be careful not to drop it on it's head, as the battery will smash into the spring and the button top of the battery will get pushed in, or the driver will get damaged. I think putting in a rubber washer can help make it stronger and more robust, but I haven't done that yet, I probably should.
      There's a lot of potential for the light too, if you put a MOSFET and XP-L2 in there, you'll get an insanely powerful light! I'll make a video of that in the near future.
      Hope you enjoy!
      Cheers,

    what is the difference between the S2+ and the S3? Also on the gear best website I see at least 3 or 4 different types of S2+, some have Cree LEDs while others have Nichia LEDs (more pricey!) somo have different codes which I do not understand: Cree XM L2 T6 - 4C, Cree XML U2 - 1B 7135 x 6 8, L2 U2 - 1A. This is so confusing!

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      Hi,
      Good questions. The S3 is older, and doesn't support protected cells since they are a little longer, the S2+ is the newest and allows you to use both protected and unprotected. The S3 tail also doesn't allow you to put the strap on the side, making it hard to do a tail stand if your strap is on, the S2+ has two holes so you can tail stand even if you have the strap on. The S3 also has a bezel and shelf, the S2+ is one piece for the head and uses a brass block or pill, I like that better since it's far superior in terms of heat transfer and management, and easier to work on if you want to upgrade. The S3 is an older and obsolete design. The number is higher but it's an older one.
      The nichia LED is the UV light, it's cool to play with as a black light.
      You'll want to get the Cree XML2 version, the blue 4300-4500K color temperature(T6-4C) is my recommendation, tidd.ly/6a7c45ee
      If you like a cooler color temperature, like cool white, you can get the U2-1B version, but it doesn't have a metal tail switch.
      I don't recommend cool color temperature unless you want to maximize glare.
      Natural white seems more normal, and is good to maximize perceived illumination.
      Hope that helps!

      Also, the 7135 x 6 or 8, that's the number of current limiters, the more the more current and therefore power goes to the LED, just get the one with 8 and you can dim if you want less light, it'll get hot on high, but just put it on medium if you're running it for longer periods of time.

      You're welcome! Anytime! Let me know if you have any other questions.
      For color temperature, I like a nice orange color like the light from an incandescent bulb(2700K), that way you can use it at home to light up the room when the power goes out, anything with a higher color temperature than 3000K will look harsh, like a laboratory.
      4300K is fine, but they have warmer color temperatures available from the Convoy store on Aliexpress.com, if you want to get something more like 3250K, that's as low as they go. If you really want warm color temperature you gotta get them from digikey and solder them on yourself, it's a lot of work but worth it in my books.
      Thanks for subbing!
      Cheers,
      David.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      Hi, Ya that's normal, it's the PWM frequency you're hearing, it makes the components vibrate a bit, so if you got real good hearing or it's quiet you will hear it. During the beam shots I put it up to the camera, but it was really quiet, don't think the camera could pick it up that well. I can only hear it if I really try, but I have bad hearing from many years of loud music. If it bothers you, you can upgrade to the new Convoy driver with new firmware. The Aliexpress store has it, I've ordered three, and will do some testing, if it's good I'll let you guys know.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 7 lety +1

      Hi, don't go mad LOL.
      AMC 7135 is the name of the current limiter that we use in the flashlights, each one allows 350mA to pass, so we typically use 8, so 8 x 350mA = 2800mA or 2.8A.
      the m in mA is milli, so 10^-3, or move the decimal place over 3 times, so 1mA is 0.001A, or 350mA is 0.350A.
      In this video, I show you how I add some AMC7135 chips to the existing 8 x 7135 driver.
      czcams.com/video/Uzjv_zwr8Ng/video.htmlm30s

      David Sunshine thanks !! what is A?

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 7 lety +2

      Anytime, an A is an ampere, a unit of measurement for electric current. I like to equate it to flow rate of water. It's actually the flow rate of electrons, or coulomb/second of electrons per ampere.
      If you want to know more details: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ampere
      Thinking about it like volume flow of water is the easiest way to understand it though, if you want more amps to your LED, your wire needs to be bigger. Same goes for you drinking milk with a straw, if you want to drink faster, just get a bigger straw.
      Voltage is like velocity, if you drink really fast, you can get more out of a small straw, if you drink slowly, you can't get as much, unless you have a bigger straw.
      High voltage and current, is like drinking very fast using a big straw.
      So in my convoy inferno, I just try to increase current, at the same voltage, doubling the power.
      You could double current and voltage to again double the power, so 4 times the power. So on and so forth.
      Hope that helps!
      Cheers,
      David.

    Have you noticed the s2+ having mode memory but not always? Mine seems like it does most of the time but then sporadically it comes in in low when I leave off in high. It really is annoying me.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi,
      No, sorry I haven't noticed that.
      When I've set the on-time memory, it's seem to have held. The original Convoy driver is an on-time memory, so it should program and memorize the mode if it's left on that mode for over 4 seconds. Once you turn it off, that mode will come on again, no matter how long you leave it off for. Not sure why it would come back on a different mode sporadically, but it could be a defect. I've had a couple defective convoy drivers over the years, so it could happen.
      Try changing it between groups a couple times(turning it off when it blinks after 5 seconds on low), and see if that helps. Maybe leave it in the other group that you don't typically use, and do some testing to see if the memory holds; it's a different group/programming so hopefully it'll act differently and use different variables. That's a good way to troubleshoot it though.
      If it still won't hold, I highly recommend changing the driver out.
      I have changed most of my lights over to off-time memory types with more functionality/modes, using the new Convoy Biscotti firmware, or the Astrolux X5/X6 FET driver.
      Hope that helps!
      Cheers,
      David.

      David Sunshine seems like sound advice, I've tried changing back and forth several times and no matter the group it does it, in the group with strobe it comes on in strobe when you leave off in high and in the other group when you leave it off in high It comes on in low but not all the time. I did order a new led and mcpcb for it, Its gonna be my first attempt at modding.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 6 lety +1

      knives save lives Hey, sounds like it's a defective driver, unfortunately.
      If you have a copper MCPCB with direct thermal path (DTP), I would suggest the Astrolux X5/X6 driver, it's a FET driver so it'll be high current, only for power hungry individuals, but it has active thermal regulation so it's actually the best of all worlds, brighter than the stock convoy S2+, but also safer and won't get too hot. I use mine as hand warmers in the winter, lol.
      Cheers,
      David.

      Hey you're welcome!! I was more than happy about this flashlight, I've never bought something so cheap but so good before. It makes my cheaper flashlights look completly useless! You'll know what I mean if you choose to buy it. Also, there's a smaller light that I carry now, this one was kinda big. It's called On the Road M3, check it out, the battery actually gets 799mAh, and the thing puts out as much light as the Convoy S2+ basically, but it's tiny, and uses a 16340 battery. I like the side switch as well, and all the modes, it's got more than the Convoy, I particularly like ultra low, it works well when you need a tiny bit of light.
      Anyways, just wanted to share that recent discovery.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      Hi, those are the color temperatures.
      You know the super white light that looks cool or blue almost? That's cool color temperature, or 6500-7000K.
      A candle is really orange in color temperature and is about 2700K. I like warm white and natural white, but since it comes with 3800-4000K only, I prefer that.
      But if you want more glare and more lumen output, go with the 6500-7000K, I don't like that, since it's very harsh lighting, but some people love it, so it's up to you. Like the flavor of ice cream, do you like vanilla or chocolate? Lol.
      Got mine from Gearbest, 3800-4000K here: tidd.ly/b00fb0c8
      The 700mAh battery has a low internal resistance too, 114mOhm, check it out here: www.dropbox.com/s/hysemyuzyuk8tb3/INTERNAL%20RESISTANCE%20CALCULATOR%20v2.xlsx?dl=0
      That's really good for a 16340 battery! My Nitecore 650mAh battery is 201mOhm! And that's considered a good battery.
      Cheers,
      David.

      Hi,
      It needs a 16mm diameter plate.
      If you want more throw, you might want to replace it with an XPL HI led, it doesn't have a dome, so it's more suited to throwing. There's also a 5 degree lens for XPG that'll work with it.

    Hey David, which light do you prefer and why, On the road M3 or Mecarmy PT16?

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      Hi, I don't have the Mecarmy PT16, but I can say I'm very happy with the On the Road M3, and for the price, it's probably the best deal out there.
      I also have the Olight S1R, and I prefer the On the Road M3 over the S1R, because the distribution is awesome on the M3, and the user interface is better, you can double click to TURBO from any state, off, low, medium, at any time a double tap can get you to turbo, and that's invaluable. You have to hold 0.5s to turn it on and off, and that's a great feature, since it stops accidental power-up, which happens with the S1R in my pocket all the time, it'll leave me stuck with a dead flashlight probably.
      The tight beam angle and wide field angle of the On the Road M3 is awesome, way better than the S1R in my opinion, but that's because I use my light for walking trails mostly. If you want a more floody light, then the S1R or PT16 might be the way to go.
      I can't speak to the user interface of the PT16, but if it doesn't have a 0.5s hold to turn on, it will most likely have the same issue of accidentally turning on as the S1R.
      The options I like about the M3 that make it my EDC, is the magnetic tail, and the pocket clip(Which I added a magnet to, and now I can stick on the side of the car, under the car, wherever you need light). With the pocket clip, you can easily clip it to a hardhat, and work freely with both of your hands. The clip can be flipped 180 degrees to suit your needs. It's a flashlight that has everything, almost. The one thing the PT16 has is the micro USB port, which I think would be a great addition to the M3. But in the end, if I were to buy another small EDC, I would settle for the On the Road M3 in 3800K color temperature, the kit comes with a great 700mAh battery, and a good charger, the neoprene case isn't useful to me, but I'm sure it can be to some. A holster would have been more useful probably.
      I also don't like the large head on the PT16, I think they did that because they have a 3 LED array, I'm not a fan of that since you get multi-shadowing, and a tight focused beam becomes difficult due to space/reflector size limitations. But I maybe they used a high quality optic on it and it does have a great beam, I'd have to test it out to really confirm though, but optical theory says it will have it's drawbacks.
      Hope that helps!
      David.

    Will the normal grease be effective enough to transfer the heat from the brass portion to the body, or specially thermo grease is required.whats the difference between normal grease and thermo grease?please answer

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 6 lety +1

      Saurav Mazumdar Hi, yes, normal grease will be fine, but using specially formulated thermal grease will increase thermal conductivity to the body, but I don't think this extra performance is required unless you're pushing the limits and a couple degrees decrease in temp is required. The thermal grease is extra high density and made of particles that increase thermal conductivity, so it moves more heat quickly than normal grease, but if you just have normal grease you can use that, it's better than the air gaps that will be in between the brass and aluminium. Thermal grease is pretty cheap on AliExpress, so get a $4 container of that if you want, it'll perform better than regular grease. The Arctic silver stuff is way too expensive, good for CPUs but not economic for anything more. I might use some between the LED and brass, but only in expensive builds with nice LEDs. They use 99.9% pure silver particles, which have excellent thermal conductivity, you get what you pay for, lol.
      Hope that helps!

      Hey, that's a good question, yup, you can use the unprotected NCR18650B's in the S2+ with 6x7135 driver.
      The S2 isn't long enough to use protected cells so it can only use unprotected cells, but the S2+ has been lengthened to take protected cells while still being able to use unprotected cells. So it does differ from the models, but it is fully compatible with protected or unprotected 18650s.

    hi david which flashlight would you recommend for maximum runtime, I need one to keep in my car for emergency and if it possible recommend me one that use AA or AAA standard batteries

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      Hi, good question.
      I've used the XML 4xAA headlamp(tidd.ly/c586f890) for some time, and it worked very well riding the bike, I think a headlamp is what you'd want in your car, because when changing a spare tire on a dark highway, you'll need both hands, and have light where you need it, the lug nuts and tools. Or it's useful when you're removing everything from the trunk, trying to get at your spare, it gives you hands-free light when you need it most. It's also water-resistant, so great if it's raining and you need to change the tire. It uses 4xAA batteries, so it'll last an hour on high, or 24+ hours on low. It does have flicker in it's dimmed modes, but most budget flashlights will.
      If you just want a hand held flashlight, compact, that uses a single AA alkaline, then any Q5 light with 3 modes will work, like this one, it's only $3.68 (tidd.ly/f83e065d), and will run over 10 hours on low. It's a basic zoomable light, and will be fine for use around your car. You could add a magnet to the clip with some tape or heat shrink, like I did to the On the Road M3, shown here: czcams.com/video/_wfSUfMFCVo/video.htmlm10s
      Then you can mount the light to the side of your car, while changing your tire or under your hood while working on stuff.
      If you're looking for a good EDC light though, the On the Road M3 (tidd.ly/715582bd $26 for the whole kit with battery and charger) is the way to go.
      A flashlight that uses a single AAA battery, and has ultra low so it'll last a long time, is the Lumintop Worm(tidd.ly/f5937428), it's mostly for every day carry though, since it's so small.
      Right now I keep the Convoy L6 in my car for emergencies, it can last 100+ hours on Ultra-low, and it can punch out quite a bit of light when I need it to, 3800 lumens. tidd.ly/7c8738fe It's not cheap, $53, but it'll probably be the best flashlight you'll ever have.
      I have two Sanyo 3500mAh running it, but that's because I'm cheap, and I've already got those. I would buy the proper 26650 batteries for it if I didn't have spare batteries though (22650 - tidd.ly/670426bb They are fairly cheap and only $10 or so)
      If you want something that won't fail, I'd get a Convoy model though. The S2+ with a Sanyo 3500mAh cell, a side clip with a magnet on there, and a tail magnet, that would be the ultimate flashlight, 24 hour runtime on low, 1000 lumens when you need it, and mounting options to mount it to your car any way you want. (I can link you to all the parts I purchased if you want to go down the S2+ road).
      Hope that helps!
      Cheers,
      David.

      You're welcome.
      Also, if you're looking for the most basic 5 mode XML flashlight, that uses either 18650 or 3 x AAA, here it is for $6.35 - tidd.ly/e08916a1
      It is the same as the X800 that people are saying can blind a bear and defend your home, it's actually not that bright and only 500 lumens, but it's worth $6.35 for sure. Here's my review on it: czcams.com/video/7AldAI0smr0/video.html
      But to be honest, I highly recommend getting the Convoy S2+(tidd.ly/6a7c45ee), the SoShine E4S charger(tidd.ly/5faac009), and 4 x Sanyo 3500mAh 18650(tidd.ly/370373d3) batteries.
      Then you will be all set up, have a charger for your batteries, your phone, and a great flashlight. If your charger is out of batteries, you can use the cell in the S2+ to charge your phone, then at the end of the night, you can just charge everything up with the E4S. I've been using all those items for a couple years already, and it's working great. I've traveled to Europe, Japan, Korea, and that's what I take with me. I think you'll be happy with that set-up too.
      Cheers,
      David.

      Alex Hi,
      You're welcome.
      The S2+ is the newer design with better features, has a brass block and works with a protected or unprotected cell.
      I don't have the 3 but I think it only has an aluminum shelf so it's thermal management is inferior.
      I'd get the S2+, blue, since it has the metal tail switch.
      Cheers,
      David.

    When can I expect it, how long did it take for your light to come in?

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 7 lety

      Some took 2 weeks, some 1, 2, 3, or 4 months.
      The time can vary greatly.

    • @RICEY702
      @RICEY702 Před 7 lety

      ***** Damn hopefully it's just 2 weeks. Were you able to track your order? Also just want to say that your videos are awesome!

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 7 lety

      RICEY702 Nope. I couldn't really track my order, and if I could, using www.17track.net/ or something, it only said when it left the country, then months later it just shows up lol.
      Don't know where it went for months.
      Ya I hope you get it sooner than later too. If you need it in a week, you can pay $30 or something for DHL, but if it's worth more than a certain amount they charged you another $25(in Canada anyways, maybe not the US or other locations).
      For the low prices, I put up with the wait, but it's still a pain.
      Thanks man! Glad you like them! I plan to do more upgrade videos, hopefully those are entertaining.
      Thanks for the support!
      Cheers,
      David.

    Does the switch have momentary on feature?

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      +crimsonproject Nope, like all my other tailswitch lights, it's momentary-off that's available from a half push, they do this because it allows you to easily change modes after you've turned on the light.
      It's also like that because of the nature of the switch, the spring pushes the contact into place only when it's fully extended, to be momentary-on, it would need to be a spring loaded contact, which aren't used in the tail switches from what I have seen.
      The latching switch that I recently installed in my SkyRay King is actually momentary-on though, it had two sets of contacts, and I used the momentary-on one, since the driver is an on-time driver, and it works better that way, as you can get to the mode you want, and then latch it in place.
      I've thought about using the Convoy with a pressure switch, but the manufacturer has not found a strong enough pressure switch and wire that they feel comfortable using, I think the best thing to do would be to mod a pressure switch from a good source, to the Convoy S2+ tail, and modify the driver to be a 1 mode driver. Then it'd make a great rail mounted light. Very bright, great punch, and awesome field angle and beam angles. For less than $20 US, this thing will beat most $100-$200 lights in performance and quality, in my opinion. The light doesn't quit hold in a 1" scope mount though, it needs a piece of inner-tube rubber to hold it in place, but that's better than metal to metal.
      Cheers,
      David.

    • @crimsonproject
      @crimsonproject Před 8 lety

      +David Sunshine thanks for the input. Im really sold on this, but not having a momentary on feature might be a dealbreaker sadly. I would like to be able to just half tap the switch for momentary on and let go when not needed. If u know of a similar light that has this feature, i would really appreciate the heads up! Thanks for replying quickly too!

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      +crimsonproject You're welcome. It is a fine light, but ya, it's got a simple switch, probably to keep the costs low. If it were a momentary-on style switch, it would certainly cost more.
      There may be a tail switch out there that can drop in to make it momentary-on like the Fenix tactical lights, but I haven't found one yet.
      Maybe that's what they should do in their future lights. Then it will really compete with the $100+ lights.
      My pleasure.
      Cheers!
      David.

      +crimsonproject Ya, it's not bad. You're welcome.
      I said check out the RA-602, as it had a tail switch button that could be purchased separately that had a momentary-on function, and then lock on/off, but it's discontinued so not go. They seem to have some good lights, but I haven't checked them out. There's also the RA-801-L2, looks good, but can't confirm how well it works, or how well it's made. Guess we'll have to keep looking, but I'm sure there's something out there that's suitable for your needs.

    Too bad I haven't seen a black or gray S2+ with the metal switch. They're all rubber domed switches.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      Yup, I was buying an S2+ for my buddy and he wanted black, but since the metal switch is nicer, we decided on the blue. Hopefully they make the metal switch available in all colors, it's way better in my opinion. I wonder if the metal switch can be swapped over? Might work if they are built the same. I don't have one with the rubber switch so I can't test.

    • @selimate

      +David Sunshine do you know if the the metal switch has a rubber seal underneath?? like is it waterproof?

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      +selimate Yup, at 6m32s I show how the rubber insert goes in. It can take some spraying water and probably be submerged a little bit, it's more water resistant than the rest of my lights.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      +selimate Ya you won't be disappointed, it's a tough light and being water resistant is great, and essential for a flashlight in my opinion. You're welcome! Take a look in the description for the various options, color temperature, the number of 7135 limiters, batteries, etc.

    Hi.
    Thank you for the video.
    I went toy Bang good site to look for the Convoy S2+,and I found a lot of different lights,so I am now confused.Here is the link. www.banggood.com/search/convoy-s2+.html.
    Could you explain a little what is all this ?
    Thank you again.
    Theodore.

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 8 lety

      +ThPappas Hi Theodore, sure. Also check out Gearbest or Aliexpress, they have the Convoys on there, same seller, just a few different listings. For description of the color temperature and 7135 current limiters, check out the description of this video, step 1, 2, 3 and 4 would be of interest to you.
      I would recommend the warm white(T6-4C) with 7135 x 8, and a metal tail switch. Here's a link to the blue one I got: www.gearbest.com/led-flashlights/pp_232308.html
      You can get it in different finishes, like red, green, grey and black.
      Hope that helps.
      Cheers,
      David.

      @DavidSunshine  Před 7 lety

      Thanks man! Glad you liked it.
      Note that a few months ago Convoy came out with their own firmware called Biscotti, it was written for their flashlights, and you can either buy the driver from them, buy it in the Convoy C8 clear, or ask them to upgrade the Convoy S2+ to the new Biscotti firmware for an extra charge.
      It's off-time memory, and has 12 user programmable modes. So it will make this Convoy S2+ that much better! Let me know if you want a link to their store, or more information.
      Cheers,
      David.

    • @kleavenae
      @kleavenae Před 7 lety

      C8 is bigger, I'd like a compact flashlight. I've already ordered the S2+, I don't know which firmware is on it. I'll check it when arrive.
      The firmware is a C and a binary file, so you have to flash it. I think I have the equipment to do that.

    • @kleavenae
      @kleavenae Před 7 lety

      Or do I have to buy a new controller board to have the new firmware?

    • @DavidSunshine
      @DavidSunshine  Před 7 lety

      Ya, I prefer to the S2+ to carry in a pocket or anywhere else, the C8 is too big, and is only a good if you want a thrower for distance shots.
      I think all the S2+ have the older firmware, they haven't started putting the new driver into any of the S2+ yet. I think Convoy's Aliexpress store is the only one that sells a flashlight with it. Even Gearbest's Clear C8 doesn't have it, they have the old firmware in there.
      You're right, you can download the code from here bazaar.launchpad.net/~toykeeper/flashlight-firmware/trunk/view/head:/ToyKeeper/bistro/biscotti/biscotti.c and flash the AtTiny13A chip on old 105D's, I haven't done that before, as I don't have the hardware to do it yet.
      You can also buy the new drivers with the new firmware already flashed here: tidd.ly/817a2be4
      It would be fun to alter the code a bit to personalize it to how you want it.
      I'd make a group with 0.1%, 35%, then 100%, they only have 1%, 20%, 100%.
      The other modes with moonlight (0.1%) all have 5 or more modes to cycle through.
      Not a big issue because you can just enable memory, but then you've gotta cycle a lot more to find the right brightness later.
      At least they have battery check and all those other modes, that's pretty cool.
      Hope that helps.
      Cheers!
      David.
