OLD BOX CALL vs NEW BOX CALL (Matt Van Cise- High Class Calls)

  • I've used the same box call for 10 or 12 years and have grown fond of it and built up a lot of confidence and memories with it. I decided to find a new one this year and I really like the one I chose. It will take awhile to get as comfortable with it as I am with the old one, but I can't wait. This video is merely just to show the different sounds of two boxes, especially away from the mic.

Matt is just a beast when it comes to calling/understanding turkey talk the things he can do with friction and diaphragm is just unreal I like both calls I think you ran the older call better but it’s been your go to call so you have more confidence in it

I have 3 of Matt’s boxes. They are crazy real. I have one that is kinda between those 2 you just ran. Some of those old box’s are deadly due to that higher front end imo . I adapted to that years ago even with buildings my mouth calls. That high front end and when it breaks over will make one scream when nothing else will. I was sitting with Billy yargus 15 years ago and we had a discussion about it. He said “Derek 75% of my mouth calling in the woods is front end, it’s all about those octaves.”
Great video bud and don’t forget that chalk. Lol

Thanks so much! I agree, that older box just has a way of ringing in that gobbler's eardrum I guess. I love the way Matt's box sounds, it just doesn't seem to 'carry' like the other one.

The difference is your first call is glued. Bottom and sides are seperate pieces . Your second call is one piece . You’ll notice most one piece calls have a “certain sound” and most glued calls have a certain sound .

Haha! Nothing wrong with that! My brother used a Lynch forever and it finally broke last year. Old calls can make you sentimental

Unfortunately turkey vests don't usually accommodate two box calls. I'm a bit of a collector. I'm going to get a Matt Van Cise call but I was hoping to see him at an outdoor show and test drive them before I buy. I do have a few David Halloran calls that are nothing short of incredible. They're also works of art. His Crystal Mistress is the best friction call I own. His box calls with ebony lids sound amazing.

No hen sounds the same.....I've heard hens that sounded so horrible...you thought it was a hunter at first listen....that's why some gobblers respond to one call and not another....if it sounds close to a hen they are ust to hearing.....just saying....I've turkey hunted 30 years.....don't believe in decoys or blinds....put to each there own.....I believe in 100 percent fair chase.....I don't know how guys get satisfaction out of using a decoy to bring them in....I wouldn't consider myself a hunter doing that....just my opinion......89 Long beards to my credit...I just get lucky alot I guess

The Gobbler's Knob sounds less like a turkey call. Hard to beat the cutts on the new call, though.

Gobbler's Knob sounds cleaner in the beginning of the note with a ever so slight raspy finish.
Whereas the Custom call sounds high pitched in the beginning of the note but also very raspy at the same time, almost confusing to me, but in the end your selling that song to a Tom not me, so if you get repeated bird's running straight into you I don't guess it matters, but like you I'd be reluctant to feel confident with that call because it just sounds odd to me, but I guess if you find a different spot on the paddle later that sings a note you like that might change the whole deal! Kill a bird first with the tried and true then practice on another bird with the new call.
