Question for you, do you believe in going backwards?
I mean unlike Benifer (the cheesy combo of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck), going back is not something we generally do.
But what about on the job front? Should we ever return to an ex-employer?
My gut feel is the answer is no. It would be a bad idea. But is this true?
In this video I talk about whether it is a wise choice to go back to a previous employer when taking a new job.
It might not be the answer you think.

I returned to a company after a year because I missed the ‘culture’ and it had completely changed. Took a pay cut and a step backwards in responsibility and it was the worse career decision I’ve ever made. Just now digging out the hole 2 years later.
This guy is talking about me lol. I left chasing more money and prestige but realized I miss my old job's autonomy, flexibility, remote work, and culture. 😅 I have a chance to go back but waiting to hear back on pay. Willing to take a pay cut but not less than what I made initially at my old job.
Boomerang--went back and enjoyed my 2nd employment there. Stayed 5 years the second time
Amazing ! Sounds like a great choice, what changed for you second time Mark?
Ya how u do it ?
My old job wanted me back that I quit last summer. I’m not going back to a toxic ex bf. And that’s how it is. They might act nice for a short period like an ex toxic bf but then go back to their toxicity. They couldn’t pay me. Plus the mockery you’d have to deal with when you come back. People talking behind your back saying “look who couldn’t get ahead in life and decided to come back…” I’m not putting up with that.
Remember the same reason you left the first time will be the same reason you’ll leave again.
Should I boomerang back to my office. I left because my growth was stagnant. But as of now when I don't have job from last 3 months my previous company looks good.
This video hit the spot. I left a lower paying government job with a lot of family time, for a job with more money. 4 months into this job and I question it every day. It’s tough imagining going back but I guess this is life and one of its many challenges. Thank you for this excellent video Brendan.
Same. My old job is offering me a spot back on a diff team. Strongly considering it.
I'm in the sane situation. I left my government during the beginning of the Pandemic. Now I have an opportunity to come back to my old job and work from home for 90 percent of time. I'm just concerned about the work environment for the days I have to come in the office.
Boomerang here also. I asked myself the exact same questions your are talking about, the same reflection you are stating. I brought a fresh perspective to that company and try to share it to others. I also fell into the same traps you talk about but, with that step back and experience i acquired in other companies, i was able to better manage those situations and make the best out of it. I’m 3 years in and time will tell if i did a good move but for now, i’m good with it :-)
That's great to hear Luc. Congrats on a great return!
I did, sort of.
I, along with others in my dept asked for a raise, but we ended up not getting it so I changed depts making better money. I hated the new job and watched my former team everyday, missing what i used to do. I ended up asking my former supervisor to take me back despite a paycut from my current postion but did end up with a slight bump from my previous wage I had with that particular dept. It proved to me that grass was definitely not greener on thd other side.
I am dealing with the same thing right now. Contemplating on reaching out to my former boss to have a conversation about it.
@@cara_alexis
If you do, keep it between you and your former supervisor.
Once the dept I was leaving found out I was bombarded with written warnings despite having nothing but positive reviews before that. I was shocked and appalled.
I was laid off 10 months ago from a large corporation after 26.5 years of continuous employment. This was due to a site closure (everyone top down unfortunately was let go); the company was extremely gracious giving me over a year notice, 9 months' salary, continued insurance for 9 months, and job placement assistance. I started a new job that I enjoy at a much higher salary immediately upon separation, but the commute is brutal (1 hour each way compared to 10 mins at my old company). Out of nowhere my old company (different division - but one I worked closely with and know a lot of the associates) called me up and asked me to apply for a different higher-level position but in a similar field that fits my skillset perfectly. At first, I was thinking 'no don't go backwards', but then something told me to hear what they had to say. The panel interview was a sham. No interview questions were asked, more like how ya been type of thing. They were simply ticking boxes of going through the process. The next day they offered to bridge my seniority, match my current salary (plus a little more), restore my 27 vacation days (plus 11 paid holidays and 7 paid personal days), but me on the manager level bonus program (while having no direct reports), and the cherry on top they are giving me office space 10 mins from my home, and I can work there or from home as much as I want. I start June 19th. Don't dismiss anything out of hand, there is never any harm in listening to what a former employer has to say. I know it will be different and challenging, but some companies are cut from a different cloth. Sometimes you can go home.
I'm so pleased to hear your story and how everything has worked out for you - I am currently going through a similar thing and you've given me hope for the future!
I have boomerangs back to my old job but at different store under a new management. It’s all good now and better than the last location.
I agree with your thoughts Thank you it helped me
This is the best video on the subject in my opinion.
Thank you Andre, I really appreciate you saying that. Please do share with anyone whom you think will find it helpful.
Thanks I was looking for a good discussion and you gave me one in a monologue. Keep up doing good work!
Thank you Neelanjana! Am really pleased it helped, if you have any questions, please do let me know as happy to help.
I feel in most situations it is not best to go back to a former employer. For many of the reasons you mentioned.
Unless there is a unique reason you left, like moved then moved back, or pursued an educational opportunity.
Thank you for sharing!
Never go backwards just forward!
New job has been so disappointing and toxic. Super salary increase and promotion were the main drivers to take it. Wrong ones I can say now. At old job i stayed only 1 year i think i didnt give all the chances. Of course not everything was wonderful but i have a huge remorse now of not having stayed longer. Team was great. Im thinkin of having a conversation with old employer and check what they think
Nothing changes they call you cos they need you but their micromanagment System still their.
Thanks mn
Thanks for watching! Have you ever gone back? If so, write "Boomerang" in the comments below and tell me if it was the right choice!
I left because I was a contractor and there were no permanent vacancies in my city at the time. There are now, so if I did choose to go back in the future I would be permanent staff, also I would be doing a different job, so the reasons I left would no longer be there.
wow 🤩
🙏🏻 have you been in this situation?
Please explain the significance of those questions you ask yourself, whether you're convincing yourself to chase the offer or not
So it all boils down to are you trying to convince to take the job i.e., you don't reallly want to but think you should, or are you trying to convince yourself not to take the job i.e., you really want to take it but are checking the reasons not to.
This means you are being objective about the reasons for taking it. Does that help?
I am thinking of going back however still unsure If it will be a good decision in a long run as I am still going to work on the same thing there but they are going to pay me more the team is good there… In my current organisation the team is wonderful I get to learn new things as part of my job but the pay is not that much. What should I do ?
This is a difficult decision Hkap. You need to do what is right for you. My only thought is what makes you happy and where do you learn them most?
Getting more money will only satisfy for so long but being unhappy or bored in a role can easily outweigh the extra $.
Personally I took a job for money once and lasted 11 months as was bored as hell. I would say enjoy what you do, be really good at it and the money will come.
Don’t go
What did you decide to do?
@@cara_alexis I didn’t join back and the team I was working for as a contractor they retained me in their company as a perm so I got a substantial hike… I guess it’s always better to listen to the inner voice and learn from our past experience for me it was If they didn’t care about you before would they do it now… Happy with not going back and repeating the same things 😌
@@cara_alexis Also if you think they will take good care of you, you like the team and you’ll get to do/learn new things as well .. Then all the best !!
I'm going back to my old job. My new job is too toxic. I understand why they're hiring nobody wants to work in there. Place to toxic.
Good luck, hope it goes well. Never a good option to stay in a toxic environment.
How did it work out for you in the end, Saviorknight? I’m in the same boat as you “were” and may have a chance to boomerang back.
@@WeWuzKangzNsheeet First, after returning to my old job there was talking around the place that I return some negative and positive. It breaks even. I work hard for 3 months then I got a promotion for a leadership position with higher pay. The company doesn't want to lose me again so they even gave me another raise. I am doing well now. I will keep moving up in the company.
@@SaviorKnight nice one. I returned 2 and 3 times and I like they gave me this opportunity. It's sign of a good company. They pay well but job was very tough
the background music makes the video a bit depressing tbh.. not what i'm looking for when you're already conflicted and confused 😅
