We keep our laundry soap containers that have the little push button spout. We fill them with water and leave the extra soap in it and use if our water goes out to wash dishes and hands.
I had a bad experience with something similar; it was a little dish soap that had been left in a container that got filled with water and set aside. After several months the water actually got very nasty. Idk if the same would happen with the laundry detergent or not but I would check on the water in those containers periodically.
No power? No problem. I have thousands of tea-light candles, about 20 home-made Crisco emergency candles (1.5 litres in mason jars), 100+ CP250 Campingaz gas cans, and a camping stove with kettle and mess tins. Also about 2,000 litres of bottled water, 5 hotwater bottles, woollen blankets and quilts, and matches and lighters. I also have 1,000 batteries, headlamps, camping lanterns, flashlight, and strings of LED microlights that are AA battery operated.
Debbie Curtis, initially, I also set myself up with an emergency lighting and minimal heating plan that was heavily dependent on candles. However, after doing some research and experimentation, I came to realize that the number of candles required to reach my goal produced to much smoke and took up too much of my time to curate making that plan untenable. I still have and will use my candles, but I've since added other cleaner and more efficient sources of heat and light. Just like Kylene and Jonathan, I am a strong advocate for thorough testing of your resources to be sure they are adequate for the job and that you fully understand how they will perform. For things that need batteries, I use scotch tape and tape them to the outside of the lantern or flashlight. You could also put them in a snack baggie and then tape the baggie to them. No more looking for them.
About an hour after I posted the message below, it appears that Odin was listening to me. The power went out at 11 AM, and we endured no hardship. I read my new seed catalogue, the fire in the woodstove kept us nice and cozy, and what little electrical requirements we had were easily covered by our Jackery solar generators. The power came back on around 3 PM while I was getting ready to reheat leftovers on the wood stove. A minor inconvenience, at worst. It pays to be prepared. Stay well, everyone!
A couple of things that can help with home security are 1. shingle/gravel driveways etc so that anyone approaching can be heard (walking on stones is noisy!) 2. Have venetian blinds at your windows - they are noisy if disturbed, and anyone trying to gain entrance that way would get seriously tangled up in the blinds!
Get a dog, especially the little nervous type, 2 of them will wake up the whole town, and a really big dog will scare any intruder, all three would be worth their weight in gold. 😮
There is a high wind warning for my region this afternoon. Everything I own is charged and ready, the fireplace is going nicely and there's hot water in the kettle on the wood stove. I think I'm ready for a short test. LOL Thanks for your videos!
One of the best videos I have seen! I am not only a prepper ,but I also have worked in disaster recovery and reconstruction for over 20 years in Japan, Philippines and Canada. I would add wind power to the mix and an option of a water turbines if applicable to area. Pedal generators help as well and good exercise as well.
I have been preparing for the last 45 years. I don’t need to turn off my electricity to see how well we can survive. We live in an area that gets 8-10ice storms each winter. They leave us without electricity and water for at least a week most of the time it’s 2 weeks. A severe ice storm a few years ago left us 31 days without electricity and water and roads impassable for over a week. We don’t have generators or propane. I have a large supply of kerosene lamps and lanterns and plenty of kerosene, we have plenty homemade candles, battery operated candles, flashlights we heat and cook with our wood/coal stove and have all types of cast iron skillets, pots, kettles, griddles, Dutch ovens, my 3legged pots also. We prep all spring, summer and fall to get ready for what may come by stocking our pantries full of homegrown homecanned foods, water, dry goods for at least a year or two we stock our livestocks needs also. Our area can be a very dangerous and if you aren’t prepared you can put yourself in a deadly situation. We have to have all outside work done before dark because of coyotes, and cougars. We also keep an extra chainsaw, bars, chains, oil, gas etc and not to mention lots of firewood and coal. It’s better to be safe than sorry. If you move so where unfamiliar please ask your neighbors what the weather is like. We have to drive 100 mile round trip just to get to a Walmart, Kroger, aldi and that is one of the main reasons for keeping everything well stocked. May God bless you and your family.Merry Christmas
At a preparedness event a guy show how to cook in a haybox. He just used old towels and cooked a roast beef dinner and only used a few minutes of fuel. Some day I am going to build one of those.

I have oil lamps. Worrying about earthquakes, especially after the one in Magna a couple of years ago, I have purchased those sticky dots under all of them. It works wonderfully. I can still get them off if needed. I have also put them under other things I cherish. Just a thought
Why not tape a Ziploc bag with your batteries inside taped to the lantern. Then when you need them they're right there. When you finish using it pop them back in.
A small rocket stove in a fireplace works well. I have the silverfire but there are cheaper alternatives.Cooking outdoors during extended grid down is an invitation to disaster. Those with no food will do anything for yours.
I have done a lot of this, but there is so much more I want to do…..I am thankful for what I have…..and at least I am mentally prepared and know what I can and can’t do. Water is huge….we have lots of water compared to most of our neighbors, but we have 6 essentially adults in our home. The two teenagers do need most of the important things, like water that the 4 adults need. In fact, the teens often eat more than we seniors do. And, they love LONG showers….can’t happen under the most extreme loss of power, water, sewer for months or years. I want a composting toilet….at least I think I do. I am wondering if we can make our inside toilets be composting toilets using special bags, etc. You got me thinking.
you can cut up a piece of non slip rug floor protector or non slip kitchen shelf vinyl mats to set under oil lamps to keep them from sliding or tipping over in possible mild earthquake or heavy equipment truck passing by, et. rumbles ☺️
I actually got a 4 PC recharging light bulbs and have hand crank radio, they are packed in metal box with cardboard lining also have oil lamps and candles.
For the lantern batteries; I take the batteries out and place them in a zippered cloth bag or Storacell by Powerpax (on Amazon) to attach to the lantern handle. This keeps the batteries WITH the lantern and avoid them leaking and ruining the device. Storacell by Powerpax Slimline AA Battery Storage Container - Holds 4 Batteries, Orange (Pack of 2). I also store an EXTRA set of batteries in this storage bag.

I attach a small canvas bag to the lantern that contains the batteries for it to keep the batteries from leaking in the lantern and ruining it. I NEVER use candles!
I have back up options for my backup plans. #1 Lights- I have hand cranking flashlights. I have eBulbs. I have battery operated lights. I also have candles. There are fuel oil lanterns here. And I have a lantern where you insert a tea light candle. I also have a solar power bank that acts as a flashlight. I tried the outdoor solar lights but they are not bright enough. #2 Heating and cooling. - we have 16 outdoor solar panels in the front yard. I live alone but on a homestead that has 2 houses and multiple out buildings. My house is a 4 room farmhouse which is well insulated. The other house has an alternative fire place as it's back up heating. #3 Cooking - I have numerous options that I set up. I have a pellet camping stove with supplies in a small drawstring bag with firestarter pellets .I have the catering fuel set up. I put a fire pit with a metal cooking grate in the back yard. I have 3 types of small appliances that can be plugged into the truck to prepare hot food. I have a food grade bucket with ready to eat jerky, nuts, snacks and trail mix. I have a solar setup for the small kitchen appliances on the island in one of the houses. I can also plug in some kitchen appliances to the solar power bank I have some ready to eat meal options that can be eaten cold if I have to do it.

Where I live this year I lived with no electric for almost 2 weeks because we didn't have the money to get the electric turned on at the time right now I am cooking with some stuff I have gotten from the Dollar General that's how I cook now I was using a burner but I think this is much better then the regular burners
I have been prepping for many years and I suggest for hybrid lanterns are the 3 in 1 lanterns but any solar lanterns are just as good. For a flashlight, radio, crank and solar combo is the Scorpion II. The information on all the other items they are introducing on here are fantastic. AWESOME job on this video...
Hands down! ZERO water is the best water filter. Tests of top ten filters, Zero always comes on top number one. I would still boil water or prefilter depending on water source. Then use the Zero water.

I fitted solar & a wind turbine on my top floor high rise apartment & if im generating at least 4 amps then I can have a TV, a set top box & stereo plugged in & just 4 amps powers these items & also catches up on battery charging, because battery voltage slowly increases. My inverter is 3000 watts 240 volts.
How do you protect all your solar generators from the affects from an EMP like scenario? Faraday cages might work but keeping them in one big enough all the time seems difficult. Thanks
yes. agreed, and some very knowledgable people say that in a strong EMP, you would need huge (thick) faraday cages, the bags won't nearly be protective enough.
Bars stuck in windows so they can't be opened, and blocked in case they decide to break windows. Have 1 gun that because of my window set up I'll have time to grab it plus have knives that can be used also.
I'm a big fan of rechargeable batteries and solar, but I also like having things I can pop batteries in. The other issue is that rechargeable batteries in devices have a life span. So I'd recommend having replacement ones if possible.
I have a question? What do you’ll think about using solar panels that you can have installed on the roof if your home. I never hear any preppers talk about going total solar. It’s very expensive I know we looked into it. So we are trying to figure out the best solar power to use that we can afford to buy. My husband and I both have C-pap machines and one large freeze and a small one not including regular household appliances like refrigerator and such. So do you’ll have use solar electricity on the exterior of your home?

Suggestion for batteries. Try Eneloop and Tenergy rechargeable brands. We haven't had any problems so far however I did throw out a 4 pack of Duracell D cells which started to leak. Ouch.
Newbie question. While making my buckets of rice can u mix the types? I got like 28 pounds of jasmine rice. Can I mix the minute rice into it to finish out the last 4lbs? Will it mess anything up?

For a DIY, portable solar shower set up, check out ‘Boss of the Swamp’ on youtube. Using a food grade water container (car boy) painted black, you can fashion your own shower. I’ve done it myself, and it really works. I advise you to check the water temperature before you use it. The water gets hot enough to burn you. BE CAREFUL!

I purchased a crank light at the dollar store, and i came to find that there was NO connection between the generator and the battery, There was no way to modify the flashlight to recharge the battery, the whole thing was just too flimsy

Are there still going to be cell towers? It’s always been a question for me. If in a shtf situation someone comes to your door and needs food or some other thing. What do you do?? Give it to them and run the risk of them coming back and robbing you later or ……
You give them nothing. Let them think you have nothing. You never know who they may tell. Help your close neighbors friends and family. When it gets real you need to get hard.
Happens every February in Chicago. Cold, snow, ice, and old age mean I make very sure I can go a month without the grocery store. And after Texas froze, now I make sure I can go at least several days without heat. And I know how to do it because I subscribe to Provident Prepper! (Shameless plug 😆)
I learn a lot from you guys. But you act like the power is out, possibly forever, but the rest of "life" is the same. There will be people that did not prep. Batteries die. Solar power dies. What do you do 5 years later? 10? Wood ? Coal?
Personally, I believe that society is resilient. I don't think it is a forever thing. We will eventually recover. It may not look the same. The trick is to make it through the rough years.
I lived in Phoenix for 20 years from 1990 until 2010. Our power went out every year at least 3 times. It was usually in August and it was usually during the monsoon season. It was usually not more than 24 hours, but it was miserable. Other parts of the valley would have electricity, but it was dangerous to drive, because none of the stoplights worked. So you could sit home in the dark and be hot or drive around with 100,000 other people hoping to find a cool, public place, that was open and had room for you and your family.
I would hate to have to go carrying one of those "hats" full of urine through the house from the bathroom to the outside to the yard though! I would be afraid of having an icky spillage event.

I saw a BATTERY DADDY storage device at a $ General Store recently for about $15 or 16 dollars. pack the batteries in THERE and know where BD is!

One of the best videos I have seen! I am not only a prepper ,but I also have worked in disaster recovery and reconstruction for over 20 years in Japan, Philippines and Canada. I would add wind power to the mix and an option of a water turbines if applicable to area. Pedal generators help as well and good exercise as well.
I have been preparing for the last 45 years. I don’t need to turn off my electricity to see how well we can survive. We live in an area that gets 8-10ice storms each winter. They leave us without electricity and water for at least a week most of the time it’s 2 weeks. A severe ice storm a few years ago left us 31 days without electricity and water and roads impassable for over a week. We don’t have generators or propane. I have a large supply of kerosene lamps and lanterns and plenty of kerosene, we have plenty homemade candles, battery operated candles, flashlights we heat and cook with our wood/coal stove and have all types of cast iron skillets, pots, kettles, griddles, Dutch ovens, my 3legged pots also. We prep all spring, summer and fall to get ready for what may come by stocking our pantries full of homegrown homecanned foods, water, dry goods for at least a year or two we stock our livestocks needs also. Our area can be a very dangerous and if you aren’t prepared you can put yourself in a deadly situation. We have to have all outside work done before dark because of coyotes, and cougars. We also keep an extra chainsaw, bars, chains, oil, gas etc and not to mention lots of firewood and coal. It’s better to be safe than sorry. If you move so where unfamiliar please ask your neighbors what the weather is like. We have to drive 100 mile round trip just to get to a Walmart, Kroger, aldi and that is one of the main reasons for keeping everything well stocked. May God bless you and your family.Merry Christmas

At a preparedness event a guy show how to cook in a haybox. He just used old towels and cooked a roast beef dinner and only used a few minutes of fuel. Some day I am going to build one of those.

I have oil lamps. Worrying about earthquakes, especially after the one in Magna a couple of years ago, I have purchased those sticky dots under all of them. It works wonderfully. I can still get them off if needed. I have also put them under other things I cherish. Just a thought

Why not tape a Ziploc bag with your batteries inside taped to the lantern. Then when you need them they're right there. When you finish using it pop them back in.

A small rocket stove in a fireplace works well. I have the silverfire but there are cheaper alternatives.Cooking outdoors during extended grid down is an invitation to disaster. Those with no food will do anything for yours.
I have done a lot of this, but there is so much more I want to do…..I am thankful for what I have…..and at least I am mentally prepared and know what I can and can’t do. Water is huge….we have lots of water compared to most of our neighbors, but we have 6 essentially adults in our home. The two teenagers do need most of the important things, like water that the 4 adults need. In fact, the teens often eat more than we seniors do. And, they love LONG showers….can’t happen under the most extreme loss of power, water, sewer for months or years. I want a composting toilet….at least I think I do. I am wondering if we can make our inside toilets be composting toilets using special bags, etc. You got me thinking.
you can cut up a piece of non slip rug floor protector or non slip kitchen shelf vinyl mats to set under oil lamps to keep them from sliding or tipping over in possible mild earthquake or heavy equipment truck passing by, et. rumbles ☺️
I actually got a 4 PC recharging light bulbs and have hand crank radio, they are packed in metal box with cardboard lining also have oil lamps and candles.
For the lantern batteries; I take the batteries out and place them in a zippered cloth bag or Storacell by Powerpax (on Amazon) to attach to the lantern handle. This keeps the batteries WITH the lantern and avoid them leaking and ruining the device. Storacell by Powerpax Slimline AA Battery Storage Container - Holds 4 Batteries, Orange (Pack of 2). I also store an EXTRA set of batteries in this storage bag.
Vaccum sealing your batteries also helps preserve batteries for long term storage.

I attach a small canvas bag to the lantern that contains the batteries for it to keep the batteries from leaking in the lantern and ruining it. I NEVER use candles!
I have back up options for my backup plans.
#1 Lights- I have hand cranking flashlights. I have eBulbs. I have battery operated lights. I also have candles. There are fuel oil lanterns here. And I have a lantern where you insert a tea light candle. I also have a solar power bank that acts as a flashlight. I tried the outdoor solar lights but they are not bright enough.
#2 Heating and cooling. - we have 16 outdoor solar panels in the front yard. I live alone but on a homestead that has 2 houses and multiple out buildings. My house is a 4 room farmhouse which is well insulated. The other house has an alternative fire place as it's back up heating.
#3 Cooking - I have numerous options that I set up. I have a pellet camping stove with supplies in a small drawstring bag with firestarter pellets .I have the catering fuel set up. I put a fire pit with a metal cooking grate in the back yard. I have 3 types of small appliances that can be plugged into the truck to prepare hot food. I have a food grade bucket with ready to eat jerky, nuts, snacks and trail mix. I have a solar setup for the small kitchen appliances on the island in one of the houses. I can also plug in some kitchen appliances to the solar power bank I have some ready to eat meal options that can be eaten cold if I have to do it.

Where I live this year I lived with no electric for almost 2 weeks because we didn't have the money to get the electric turned on at the time right now I am cooking with some stuff I have gotten from the Dollar General that's how I cook now I was using a burner but I think this is much better then the regular burners

I have been prepping for many years and I suggest for hybrid lanterns are the 3 in 1 lanterns but any solar lanterns are just as good. For a flashlight, radio, crank and solar combo is the Scorpion II. The information on all the other items they are introducing on here are fantastic. AWESOME job on this video...
Use some Velcro or 'tacky stick' under your candle trivet or lamp oil base to hold them in place if you want some minor earthquake prevention.

Hands down! ZERO water is the best water filter. Tests of top ten filters, Zero always comes on top number one. I would still boil water or prefilter depending on water source. Then use the Zero water.

I fitted solar & a wind turbine on my top floor high rise apartment & if im generating at least 4 amps then I can have a TV, a set top box & stereo plugged in & just 4 amps powers these items & also catches up on battery charging, because battery voltage slowly increases. My inverter is 3000 watts 240 volts.
Energizer Ultimate Lithium AAs do not leak. 20 year shelf life. Put them in all your preps and forget about it.

yes. agreed, and some very knowledgable people say that in a strong EMP, you would need huge (thick) faraday cages, the bags won't nearly be protective enough.

I'm a big fan of rechargeable batteries and solar, but I also like having things I can pop batteries in.
The other issue is that rechargeable batteries in devices have a life span.
So I'd recommend having replacement ones if possible.
I have a question? What do you’ll think about using solar panels that you can have installed on the roof if your home. I never hear any preppers talk about going total solar. It’s very expensive I know we looked into it. So we are trying to figure out the best solar power to use that we can afford to buy. My husband and I both have C-pap machines and one large freeze and a small one not including regular household appliances like refrigerator and such. So do you’ll have use solar electricity on the exterior of your home?

Suggestion for batteries. Try Eneloop and Tenergy rechargeable brands. We haven't had any problems so far however I did throw out a 4 pack of Duracell D cells which started to leak. Ouch.

For a DIY, portable solar shower set up, check out ‘Boss of the Swamp’ on youtube. Using a food grade water container (car boy) painted black, you can fashion your own shower. I’ve done it myself, and it really works. I advise you to check the water temperature before you use it. The water gets hot enough to burn you. BE CAREFUL!

I purchased a crank light at the dollar store, and i came to find that there was NO connection between the generator
and the battery, There was no way to modify the flashlight to recharge the battery, the whole thing was just too flimsy

I lived in Phoenix for 20 years from 1990 until 2010. Our power went out every year at least 3 times. It was usually in August and it was usually during the monsoon season. It was usually not more than 24 hours, but it was miserable. Other parts of the valley would have electricity, but it was dangerous to drive, because none of the stoplights worked. So you could sit home in the dark and be hot or drive around with 100,000 other people hoping to find a cool, public place, that was open and had room for you and your family.
I would hate to have to go carrying one of those "hats" full of urine through the house from the bathroom to the outside to the yard though! I would be afraid of having an icky spillage event.
