At last! A video that explains two-colour knitting clearly! I've not knitted with two colours before and wanted a very basic idea of what to do. This is a great video, thank you!

I’ve been knitting for two years now and I thank RJ for his very easy to understand knitting cause I was ready to quit learning and glad I didn’t and found RJ’s channel and from that point on I finally got knits and purls to a T and went from beginner patterns to now intermediate level patterns and hoping to get to experienced levels of knitting but I’m very happy I got where I am now and I thank you again RJ. Learning a new technique is so much easier everytime now. I went from knitting scarves to shawls blankets and hats I even learned hats and just completed two ponchos I even learned sock knitting to I just need to learn sweaters now and that’s the only item I just can’t get watching tutorials I need someone to teach me that in person. love you man ,i use to do the same when i was much younger ,as i am living in an Arabic country sadly i stopped ,but i think i was an expert i think and i could compete most of the ladies ,now at my early 50s i still love knitting and when i saw you i purchase new rods to knit in secret

In love the honest approach you had toward the snarly mess that fair isle knitting creates in the back.
What a neat idea to hold one colour to the left, European continental style, and the other to the right, which I think is Scandinavian. That'll keep them separate. Also I reckon lining it on the back with some fine jersey cotton will keep all those long strands out of harm's way. The real problem with the back is not the look, because it's on the back, but the fact you're likely to catch those strands and break them when putting the garment on. Cool. I feel more confident now. Thanks.

2, how do you start adding in color? Like, do you add a slip knot on to the next needle and use it like that?
I've been taught just to loop it with a couple inches tail left, no need for a knot
What Kelly Welly said- You just lay yarn over your needle to create a "loop" and make sure the tail is poking out of the "wrong" side of your project- AKA the messy side. Then carry on as normal, making sure to weave your tail in at the end to secure it! (If you're very worried, tie a small knot before cutting off the woven-in tail. You may be able to feel the little bump, but it won't come out! Child-proof.~)
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with all of us. I'm happy that you teach true beginners. One thing I did notice that at the beginning of the lesson (knit side) you said that the new color (red) was to go under the old color (blue) and I saw you do that. But as I watched you go further down the needle sometimes you were bringing the new color over the old color and sometimes you were bringing the new color under the old. It seemed that you were alternating over and under on the purl side but I couldn't see clearly if that was the case or not. So I'm a little confused if the new color is to go over or under the old color.

U are so awesome at knitting...my husband n I both just bought needles n yarn yesterday n watches the beginning of knit over n over to learn...I did knitting ehen I was 12 but I forgot over years...my husband was so determined to learn that he is still practicing his first row!! Hi there,I like the pattern and how you go step by step with detail. A tip you may like is that you can carry the red one stitch at a time rarher than waiting to pick it up a distance from where you last used it. Just pick up the red with each stitch. Hope I am describing this clearly, rather than leaving the red bring it along by placing the red around the blue bUT only knit the blue.. Appreciate your tutorial. Sincerely, Dianne

you don't have to do it with every stitch, I think the general rule is that, depending on the size of your yarn, you can carry it every three stitches. Basically just make the strands on the back short enough that fingers can't get under them and pull them. I also tend to carry colours up the sides if I don't need it for a few rows- just carry it up by wrapping it with the first stitch of each row as you go.
I like your idea..That is the idea I use ..that wayThe other color is not so far away..in this case it is far below ..I carry mine along with me ..otherwise it is good instructions easy to understand and a very good video thank you

I'm going to try FIRST TIME! 2 strand colour a Navajo jacket, I saw this video of 2 strand and you explained VERY WELL for the beginners. If you had a knitting class I would be one of your students lol.....but I'm in Australia. THANKYOU VERY MUCH! I will be brave & give it a try. Fair isle knitting is named after an Island in Scotland called Fair Isle where this technique originated.

So I have an odd way of teaching myself how to do things lol I learned how to knit a few months ago by simply watching a couple videos on how to knit/purl and made one swatch practicing the methods. When I got the methods mastered, I decided to tackle a project. Just not a normal "first knitting project" like normal people. Mine was the Slipstravaganza2020 MKAL by Stephen West. I figured since there would be video tutorials along with the patterns, surely it could be done with enough determination. What I didn't know was there was a name for the technique he was using. Tonight I heard a knitting word I hadn't before and decided to research it. "Intarsia". Low and behold, I had already done and ENTIRE project with it and didn't even realize it🤣I've joked about how much I learned doing his MKAL, but apparently I learned more than I even knew!!

Great video. The rule of thumb to make a fairisle pattern so that the back is neater is to carry your yarn and do not knit or purl more that 4 stitches, using 2-3 if you can, while carrying the yarn to crossover under the existing color.
I just started my first stranded knitting project and I’m having such problems with the tension of the floats in the back. Half of it is too lose, half is too tight 😢 Frogging it and starting over after watching your video 😘
Wonderful video! :) I was wondering, how do i make the "wrong" side seamless? Is there any technique to weave in all the strands on the back?

If you use parallel floats and catch 🚩them with the weaving method, your yarns will NEVER cross-it’s nice and tidy, with zero frustration!👍🏻✌🏻💛

Thank you for the effort, but when you have a big gap with one of the yarns it would be useful to weave it with the yarn that is used the most every... other stich so that the red yarn , in this case, is ready to be used when needed and not let those long thread at the back?

There are two techniques to avoid the long floats that I know of. The first one is a lot simpler one called "tucking the floats" (czcams.com/video/TNVVI0iGqvs/video.html). What they didn't say in the video is that you should never tuck in the same column in consecutive rows, or the second colour will show through your work, so this requires some care. The second one is called "invisible stranding" and is used for example in industrial knits. I've never tried that one, but it seems like it is basically double-knitting, but just having the backside for example every 5 stitches instead of every second stitch. I'm not sure what would be a good, clear English tutorial for that one though.
Hello, I am new (super beginner) to knitting. I just started my first project and want to add this design to my sweater in the center front. How do I add this knitted square to my sweater? Or is this video/square just practice. Or do I have to knit the design while I knit the full sweater? Thank you. @RJKnits

I want to label or like a price tag my swatches so I know what stitch pattern it is. What are them things called that you can add to the bottom of your swatch sort of hang at the bottom of the swatch and then you write what stitch you used for that pattern. What is the correct term for that please. i hope you understand what I mean and that I have explained it properly. thanks in advance
Ok… so I only learnt to knit a few months ago so I know next to nothing but am I wrong for holding one strand in each hand? Because I crochet it feels natural to hold a yarn in my left hand so I don’t need to swap?
I knitted my colors "separately" how can i fix that or do I need to start over?
Excellent vid! I love those colours! But.... how do you NOT strand the yarn? The loose strands end up getting caught and pulled and ruined... I have 3 cats and a dog and twin 13yr olds... that's why my work always gets pulled. I'm just trying to find a cleaner way to do fair isle knitting.
Sasha Patrick there are methods of ‘locking’ stitches so that you can create shorter strands that don’t get snagged or pulled easily. I get a bit obsessive with this and if there are more than 4 stitches of a colour in a row I will lock down the third stitch to make 2 shorter strands

Is it really hard to get good at this? Do you think anyone can knit like this? I’m a beginner and want to be able to do this stuff but I feel scared I’ll never be able to. Guess I have to master the basics and focus on that before I get too excited by these beautiful techniques!!
It's not too difficult and you definitely don't need to be an expert! I always like to test out new knitting techniques on a throw-away, low-stakes swatch before diving into a huge project.

That is ALWAYS for projects like sweaters or something you wont usually have to show the inside... not that suitable for scarfs...
You can knit fair isle scarves in the round and block them flat so that they are double thickness.
