How To Set Up A Dirted Tank - Rescaping a 40 Gallon Planted Aquarium - Ludwigia

  • In todays video i show you how to set up a planted aquarium using dirt as the substrate. I used Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil, capped with sand and gravel. I used multiple Ludwigia species. As you can see i have no issues with the dirt leeching into the water column. I did not have to wait to re-introduce fish. I instant cycled the aquarium using the previous sponge filter.
    Plant List so far:
    Ludwigia x lacustris
    Ludwigia - Sp. Red
    Ludwigia Arcuata
    Ludwigia Sp tornado
    Ranalisma Rostrata

    Awesome schooling fish, definitely underrated! That dirt you've used looks great. I've used aquatic compost in the past, works pretty well but this stuff looks awesome. Cory's got me fascinated by deep sand beds in fw tanks now! You guys!

    Thanks Bob! I've given up the dirted tank thing but the way you set up yours is very inspiring! I also like putting the sub in the back much higher than the front to make that slope. It looks good on tanks closer to the ground 👍👍

  • @yusuf5033
    @yusuf5033 Před 7 lety

    I think the fact that dirt doesn't leach into the water is because you put some little sand plus very thick layer of gravel over it. There is too little water touching the dirt surface. It may be good or bad. I would love to see the plant progress in that tank.

  • @mtgtomescourer

    • @Bbomber2012
      @Bbomber2012 Před 5 lety

      To be fair, while stem plants take most of the needed nutrients out of the water, they can take out of the substrate to make up for missing or to boost growth. No they don't need a good substrate as root feeders but it doesn't hurt either.

    • @SteenfottAquatics
      @SteenfottAquatics  Před rokem

      Eco complete does not absorb fertilizer. Sure it could over a long period of time with a bunch of extra ferts in the water. But if youre using that much fertilizer you are going to have bigger issues haha. Your plants will uptake ferts faster than your substrate would ever absorb it. Also, plants feed through the roots, so even if the eco complete did absord any, it would be beneficial to the plants.
