  • This is the thinnest paper I've ever drawn on. And it's supposed to be revered for fountain pen use. Find out in this video if it's really that good.

    I have a love-hate relationship with the TR 52 -- it really does bring out the best in some inks, but its thinness makes it frustratingly fragile. Thanks for the detailed review, nice to see how it performs with inks you've used in other videos.

    I was never entirely convinced by this paper, although it does have some remarkable properties. It's fantastic for writing with a guide sheet underneath, and probably the best airmail paper in current production. However, it's almost too much of a good thing in some respects. The way it brings out shading in inks like the Golden Brown is so marked that it can interfere with legibility, and that super smooth surface verges on being skiddy. Astonishingly it will cope with full-on Ornamental Penmanship with the sharpest and most flexible dip nibs driven to their limits, and yet I'd far rather have a bit of tooth to keep things under tighter control. Funny stuff: try before you buy if at all possible.

    She does beautiful work with those journals! I get the 68gsm TRP from Goulet Pens for my ink drawings. Love the stuff.

    I find a less wet ink works better. The ink sits on the top of the paper for longer than most and is very prone to smearing. But, as you say, the lines are sharp and the colour of the ink is true and vibrant. I love my Hobonichi for the TR paper but I don't use a fountain pen in it for everyday writing. I do use it for effect writing. I love the wrinkle it gets from watercolour. I use gel pens and the Uni pen that comes with the Hobonichi. It's brilliant paper! 🤓~Leigh
    Oh one thing though, it is not suitable for alcohol inks or markers; it will bleed. I don't mind the ghosting from other media, it's part of the experience.

      alex 0312 I agree! I love how my Hobonichi feels after it’s been used and I can feel the imprint of the pen and see the ghosting from the pages. It gives the journal such a lovely character.

    Thank you Teoh! It was wonderful to watch you skech. You make it look so efortless. :)
    I haven't used Tomoe River paper although it intriques me. What I don't understand is, why TR paper is used with watercolour in the crafting community. Even some people who actually are quite serious about watercolours have been taken in by this fad . The paper seems to buckle like mad and the colours look washed out. Weird.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  Před 6 lety +2

      I've no idea why too. The paper is too thin. I'm sure there are better crafting paper. Maybe just not as smooth as this.

    • @deejcarter2003
      @deejcarter2003 Před 6 lety +3

      Watercolor behaves differently on the paper and its a nice change. I don't have the issue with the colors looking faded out. I think its a love it or hate it thing. It is a sensory issue too, when its dry the paper crinkles and sounds and feels good.

    Another great review - thank you! I’ve been very curious about this paper. Given its thinness, I can see why it isn’t the best for sketching. But the shading you got from the Noodlers Golden Brown is gorgeous! So I think it would be great if you just wanted the pleasure of using high shading inks.

    Yay! A review for TRP! Also appreciate getting an artist's perspective on these stationary. Thanks, Teoh. If you ever get the 68gsm version, it would be great if you could do a comparison too.
    I've heard for thin paper using a black sheet of paper (instead of white) to block out the next page's ink is better for scanning or visualising what is on a specific page. Not sure if this is true?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  Před 6 lety

      If you use white paper backing, sometimes the ghosting of lines may still show through. So black may be better.

    I remember receiving letters by airmail on that incredibly thin 'airmail' paper (always blue), but ink never bled through. I wonder if it was (is?) treated the same way?

    I am going to stock up on this paper for use as "tip ins" for my bible since sometimes I need extra space and the thinness and sturdiness is exactly what I need. Tragic that I just found the paper and it is now discontinued

  • @nicolle2126
    @nicolle2126 Před 6 lety

    Thanks for the review! I've been looking to try tomoe river paper for some time now since it's really popular within the fountain pen community. Seeing just how thin it is and how it buckles is making me rethink a large purchase (though the sheen of the colored inks really showed nicely!)
    Would you ever consider trying the rotring Isographs or a felt tipped liner like the copic multiliners or unipins on this? Or something like a brush dipped in ink? I'd love to see how well this paper holds up to ink washes and if thin pens would scratch on it

  • @LourensRolograaf
    @LourensRolograaf Před 6 lety +1

  • @CrystalUsagi
    @CrystalUsagi Před 6 lety +5

    I’ve used this paper with watercolor on occasion. Would love to see a demonstration from you. The water will buckle the page a bit, but once it dries, you can close the book and after a little while the page will lay flat as if it had never buckled.

Ive done a review on my channel of the various media you can use. Also check out some journal with me videos and Hobonichi Techo videos. The Hobonichi Planners is the first introduction of this paper to my knowledge.

    I am actually just learning about TR paper. I want something with "Bible-like" so that I can tab it with Bible tabs and do my study notes journal. I can find the paper on Amazon but never in a journal. And it's impossible to search Amazon by a specific gsm paper type because they toss in anything that says "gsm" LOL.
    Also, I just priced this one on that Etsy site and the price is crazy-high. I don't need a personalized one, just something with blank or lined pages and a front and back cover. I prefer 52-gsm so If anyone has any leads, please let me know! :-)
