  • Cromwell Lock and Cromwell Weir sit on the River Trent as it flows between the Nottinghamshire villages of Cromwell and Collingham.
Built in 1810, Cromwell Lock was part of a plan to improve the navigation of the river, it has been rebuilt on several occasions throughout its time.
The lock was extended in 1935, when an extra pair of gates were added downstream of the main lock, effectively forming a second lock. During a further improvement in 1960, the two locks were returned to the one, which is now capable of holding eight standard Trent barges
Cromwell weir has been the scene of several tragedies, the main being on 28th September 1975, when a craft containing 11 Scottish soldiers was swept over the weir during the 'Trent Chase'. This is an 80 mile night time exercise taking place between Stoke and Hull. The accident was caused by a power failure which caused the navigational lights at the lock to go out. Ten drowned and only one survived. There is a memorial at the Lock which is Cromwell side of the river.
In 1981, there was a further tragedy when a pleasure boat containing a family went over the weir. The two children were rescued by an RAF Air Sea Rescue helicopter but both parents were killed in the accident.
There have been other incidents too. A barrier formed by barrels has long since been added which should prevent any further vessels from heading over the weir.
The weir also forms the limit of the tidal river.
Also featuring in this film is RSPB Langford Lowfields Nature Reserve. This nature reserve is an ever growing large scale wetland habitat. Wildlife to have been seen at the heart of this thriving reedbed are bitterns, bearded tits, marsh harriers and avocets, along with many more common birds and mammals. Starling murmurations can also be seen performing in the skies during the winter months.
All the information above has been taken from various other online sites so apologies if any of it isn't 100% correct.
