I have a go to outfit for when I just want to feel happy about things - I call it “The Cat Dress”. It’s a huge, oversized, midi shirt dress from Monki with, you guessed it, cats all over it.
It’s not flattering at all, but it’s not meant to be by design. My body underneath it is meaningless, you can’t see my stomach or my arms, or my thighs. What you do see is a little bit of my personality. When I wear it I am “Cat Dress” and Cat Dress is me.

I have five older sisters - which means for most of my life I've had a closet full of hand-me-downs. One of the cool things about growing up is that for the past few years I haven't gotten any new hand-me-downs. I've finally got to figure out for myself what I like and what kind of styles I actually enjoy wearing. I'm still figuring it out, but it has been really fun.

Three years late, but I soooo relate to this. I never grew much, so some of my hand-me-downs from middle school still fit (yknow, back when clothes were actually made to last) that taking up sewing and knitting/crochet to make clothes I truly like has been pretty fun. Even better, I can alter some of my old clothes to be wearable according to my preferences.

This was interesting to see how the other half live and what motivates them. Your lockdown social life would be exhaustingly busy for me. I have felt more "me" being able to wear hoodies and yoga pants because I like to move around, sprawl out on the floor, tuck my feet up under myself - all things that I have to restrict if I "dress up" (either to not expose myself or because the clothes would get destroyed).
It seemed like you really hit the nail on the head when you said that bit about dressing up to make yourself feel more like you physically exist - it's fascinating to see that other people enjoy a sensation that I put a lot of effort into trying to avoid. I think that having watched this I'll understand other people better in the future.

I loved this so much. I've been putting on makeup on "occasion" but that's all. I think I may try this and document it in a similar way that you did, but maybe with a couple of self-made pieces. I've always strayed from too much color as a midsize person, I think because my mom always talked about how big prints for for big people (in a really negative way), but I think second-hand shopping and sharing could help me push through that toxic learning and feel more like dramatic attention in clothing is fun. I'm almost lucky in that I have to get "dolled up" for my videos, as it's literally the only time I've had this year to get dressed and feel fully myself. When I put a whole outfit on now, with heels and everything, there is a bit of an "ohhhh, yeah thissss" feeling about it. It’s not perfect but I can talk to dad and if anything I appreciate his dad humour more than I’m willing to admit. He’s originally a Londoner, moved to Wales to love my mum, and now years later they have their home in wales while I left wales to live in London at 18 and years later I miss them every day while living where our family came from years ago. If you’re reading this, I want to thank you for being you, thank you for asking more of yourself than most people do, and thank you for making me ask more of myself too. Take care. I feel like I had my best conversation all month and I didn't even talk to you. I think sometimes I feel lost in the very much literal clutter of the things I own, at the same time as I realize that they matter to my immensely. I feel like my internal flailing about is manifesting in that dynamic, but you get something here about why people like me can be so often loving and hating our created, very stuff-focused little worlds so much. It's not just clothing. It's all some form of this with stuff. Which is not to say I shouldn't go through, organize and discard more than I do. But I think this actually helps with that. I feel it's so much easier to declutter and deal with stuff and myself fairly when I hear someone feeling things so close to what I feel.

What you said about peripheral vision - I think having mirrors around makes looking and feeling nice have an impact on me too. If I keep seeing myself looking a mess it brings me down, but liking how I look can change everything!
Also those irregular choice heels are everything and the shop on carnaby street is my happy place - haven't been to london since feb and I miss it so much!!

Red lips & gumption! 👏🏻 I’m a stay at home mom and early in my new role I discovered that frumpy, careless outfits did me no good! So I wear workplace semi casual with a 40’s and 50’s inspired clothes. People are always surprised when I confess that I don’t hold a job… just 2 kids lol. So when quarantine hit, I didn’t change this habit by every morning getting up, got dressed like I had purpose and did my at home daily routine. Honest it was a sanity save and I didn’t let my self go. So yes, must have: red lips & gumption! 💛

I’ve made sure to wear non-pajamas for at least part of the day during quarantine, and have actually only broken that rule 3 times since March. I haven’t been forcing myself though- I really do just enjoy the feeling of putting together an outfit that is visually pleasing to me and existing in that outfit for the day.
Running in to a bit of a roadblock now as I don’t shave my legs and wearing tights for a whole day actually gets quite uncomfortable. Since it gets very cold where I live, not wearing tights has limited my options a bit. It may finally be time to own more than two pairs of pants (trousers). Just another change this year :)

Yesss! That last outfit just destroyed me, what a masterpiece of color texture accessories etc.🔥💃💃💃🔥 I Really feel you on the color. I respect everyone's taste and preference, but neutrals are never and have never made for good "staples" in my wardrobe. I get incredibly depressed in a black or navy coat when I look down all I see is darkness. My only neutrals are my leggings, but they get covered in bright soft dresses down to the knee so I don't care. I was 10 or 11 dealing with what I now have been diagnosed with PTSD and depression when I discovered I could help my mood by wearing bright colors. It did take me until moving out and being able to deal with my mental health in my early twenties to just have fun with fashion. When people make rules like: you need plain basic, and neutrals, etc, it's timeless it's classic... It just doesn't work for everyone. I will wear the shit out of a coral coat as long as it fits my ever-fluctuating body and will not tire me. Color isn't a trend for me, I choose colors I love so I won't get tired of them. The one thing that killed me is when you mentioned that "you kind of forget that you have a body" part because while I'm stuck home I have fibro and no access to any of the treatments that help me manage the pain, all I feel and am aware of is my body. 😂That is not meant as a slam or guilt trip, it was more this moment of realization for me. A constant reminder of different experiences. It never occurred to me that someone could forget their bodies during this time because I can't stop feeling mine for more than 5 min. I have so much empathy for feeling disconnected from oneself in other ways, so this was illuminating. Thank you as always for sharing yourself.

I enjoy watching these kind of videos and admire your style and energy! I'd like to think it could work for me, but I can't sit in my chair for all working day in this type of clothing. In the office you have reasons to get up regularly and walk somewhere - to the meeting room, to the coffee machine, to your colleague's table, etc. And at home it's all happening in my chair. I might choose some fancy top for a day, but not a bottom. xD

The day I got laid off back in March of 2020 due to...everything....I started doing a Laid Off Fashion Parade on instagram for pretty much the same reasons you list here. I was very depressed, sad about losing my job, and sad about not being able to wear my favorite outfits for an audience. As it turned out, I got to push my style a lot farther than I ever could while I was working and I really enjoyed trying something new every day. Although I stopped doing it in September (save for Halloween & Christmas themed weeks and the occasional fun idea), it was the best thing that could have happened to me during the worst time. Be authentically yourself, as loudly as possible...even if you're the only one who can hear it. :) Love your style!

Directly after watching this, I got up and put on a look that isn't jogging or cargo pants. Now I'm wearing a neoprene floral skirt with a skin-tight floral top, and glitter tights with sushi socks. It looks a bit ridiculous but it makes me smile. I even put on lipstick!
So thank you for reminding me that clothes are in fact a way to feel better ♥

I don't own many clothes, I've moved too many times for that, but I LOVE dressing up! I've basically always spent every day dressing in my best outfits (though I definitely do get lazy with my makeup - which I think I'll now try to do! I do really miss makeup!). I think it comes from just wearing all my sister's hand me downs growing up. It was difficult to find my own style when I was basically forced into her style. I still remember the first shirt I chose that I actually did love when I was 16 - I still own it, it still fits, and I still love it to death!! Yay fashion! It keeps me sane, even when I'm terrible at it. And yes for the record, I do dress up in my "best" outfits, but as my ex used to say, nothing went with anything I paired it with and I was always too much. His criticisms definitely toned me way down. But we broke up in covid times, which was about time for sure, so I've been slowly finding myself again, but it'll be better in a month when I move out. Yes, still been living with my ex-boyfriend for months and months. Covid times sucks, has that been mentioned yet? But I got into hand sewing and made myself a pumpkin apron, and just got some cloth and will be making myself my own outfits now! Once I get the courage up haha. Somehow it was much easier to do an apron that I know only my roommates would see than to make outfits I want to actually wear where non-roommates will theoretically see someday. Ah well.
Thanks for the inspiration to start wearing makeup too!

Very much what is on my mind now. I like to wear nice clothes, I like to dress in a lot of colour and pattern and I'm working on valuing how I feel in my clothes over what others might think. I think this is applicable to how I work on my self as a whole.
Wearing cool outfits is both, a reflection of what's happening internally, and a boost to the inner self through clothes. Bi-directional benefits 💪
