  • It is easier to meet a raindeer herder by chance than to find one on purpose. This is a rare type of activity which still requires leading a nomadic life. In winter, deers move to forests with shallow snows so that they could dig up moss from under the snow cover. In summer, they prefer high plateaus where fresh breezes Keeps away mosquitoes and gadflies, while the latter always follow the herd, as they cannot exist autonomously. So, there is a whole nomadic eco-system moving from place to place: humans, deers, and gadflies.
Raindeer herders, with whom we got a chance to travel through tundra, live as one big common family: the head of family Nikolay could not even recall exactly how many children and grandchildren he had. In the evenings, the whole family gathers to watch satellite TV in a raw-hind tent.
When following the deer trail, herders get supplies with them, and they replenish the stock by helicopter as often as each month. They also hunt wild game, collect partridges' eggs, and fish in summer, so their daily menu is quite diverse.
But certainly the main course on the breeder’ menu is venison. Deers are butchered straight on the layer of snow, and their salty blood is used as a sauce. Slabs of meat are simply fried on a cast-iron plate.
Taken somewhere in the tundra, far north of Naryan-Mar.

The main means of transportation is wooden sledge made without a single nail. Deers are put together by three to drive the sledge, and each is used for this work only one day per week. Such work deers are called "bulls" and herders know each of them individually. Other deers are wild and do not approach people.
