    About time Bmw updated their plastic cases, now they look much better. I still don't understand why they don't offer 56-58 top case (same model), because most people buy after market bigger top case. 36l is just too small.

    Nice job Scott and to the point. I guess you can call this progress; however, I still like the more simple approach of its predecessor . The turning knob to control height or width seems a bit awkward and perhaps unnecessary. In general, the public got the GS that critics wanted: lighter, faster and more technology. Will stick to my 2021 Triple Black GS, though the new model is very appealing . My wife already threatened me not even to think about it 😅.

      Theres a small case for the topcaze adjuster. When I load it up and its too high, I need to take stuff out the get it to the max capacity position becasie the lever goes across the topcase right now. Then itll be easier just to turn on a knob. Id the current vario topcase also 6kg? I frequent higher loads.😊

    Thanks for taking the time to do this product review Scott. Nice pieces of luggage for sure but I suspect that ratchet feature whilst useful may not be particularly robust long term. I do like the top box alas can’t see it fitting my RT. 👍

    Great video. You nailed it. Just the review that was missing. The cases are great, despite side loading.... But the biggest problem is that if you drop your bike...there go the cases. The metal ones offer better protection...

      Vario cases were pretty sturdy. Where the alu cases would bend and deform the Vario cases were not get damaged at all.

  • @austinman1234567
    @austinman1234567 Před 8 měsíci +11

    As an RT owner, I can relate to the these cases. Central locking is a nice feature. Not so sure about a light in the side cases. The biggest negative with side loading cases, you have to pack them carefully, or the contents fall out. I await a review of top loading side cases. If the gearbox and quick-shifter live up to the hype, I may consider the new GS, but I like the comfort of my RT.

      In a couple of years the RT will be updated with the new engine, next year GSA perhaps RT the following year? My top box has 52litres of space, fits two Schuberth helmets, back rest and brake light. I would have used a helmet in a bag for demo? Thanks for video luggage not discussed in other reviews, I’ll wait for Bumot or Touratech options, I suspect these plastic panniers are probably made by Touratech.

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  Před 8 měsíci +2

      But your RT has side loading cases and mine does too. I just have the inner soft bag (cheap bag that I got on-line) and that bag goes with me into the hotel and not the dirty hard side case, it stays on the bike, all the time, never take it off. The same is expected with these cases.

    The cheap Brooks panniers on my GSA have held up really well over the years in all kinds of weather, especially in bike tip overs where the only pannier parts that touch the ground are the reinforced points at the corners along with the engine guards. Aesthetically I like the new pannier look, but maybe the aftermarket will come up with something similar in aluminum with reinforced corners for low speed drops.

    Nice to see you covering the new cases as they have been ignored by pretty well everyone else. I already knew the old cases were not transferable, a fact that immediately annoyed when I found out as I had spent quite a few hundred pounds only 2 years ago and was looking to get a good few years out of my purchase. The new ones are also 5 litres less in total capacity by my calculations vs the old varios (style over substance..!) Frustrating too is the fact that the topbox still only goes up to about 36 litres, I carried over my Givi 47 Litre and would be loath to lose the extra capacity ( I only bought the panniers I should have qualified) Although interested in the 1300 I won't be swapping for a while yet and will be interested to see what the aftermarket comes up with in terms of alternatives.

    I don't quite see the point of these being infinitely adjustable. It's only a 3.3" (84mm) difference in whole bike width between fully retracted and fully open. It seems incredibly niche where more adjustability would be desired. Even if you want to stop something from rattling around, pack an extra towel or blanket.

    Good review, thanks. And the first review of the 1300 GS that I have come across which actually deals with the luggage and, more importantly, points out that the luggage from the 1250/1200 models will not fit. There is already an aftermarket frame for hard luggage but that is for their own brand of panniers. So it would still cost an extra fortune (on top of the trade-in cost) to kit the new model out with full luggage, whether the plastic BMW ones or ones from the likes of Touratech. Most GS and GSA riders need luggage for day trips or longer adventures. And they need the luggage to be tough and capable of taking the odd knock. The rugged aluminum luggage from the 1250/1200 models is much more practical than those new plastic ones. As one comment already stated - one drop of the bike and that plastic luggage would be destroyed. And that twisty handle thing which expands the capacity doesn't look very robust. So, like a lot of other current model GS/GSA riders already stated, I'll also be keeping my GSA HP Rallye (with full luggage!) and will consider another manufacturer like Triumph, KTM or even HD if I ever decide to change.

    Great review as usual. I’m wondering about the lashing points on the side cases. I can easily see the lash points on the side bottom on the case but it’s not obvious if the 2nd set of lash points are on the top or the front and rear side, meaning the external bag would carry low on the side, not on the top?

    I like them. You can still have narrow cases but expand to fit only what you need. The top case is nice in that it has a wider opening. The original Topcase lost a lot of space at the front for the mechanism that doesn’t seem to be the case here.

  • @simulacrae
    @simulacrae Před 8 měsíci +1

    I don't really understand why you would get those cases, you would save a lot by not selecting the central locking option and the plastic hard cases. A rackless system from Mosko moto or rigid soft luggage from places like enduristan is a better option that will look better on the bike and cost less. Also the BMW cases open up sideways, I guess the built in light is great to find all of your stuff that spilled all over the road in the dark :)

    The new GS is definitely more streamlined and the new cases have also been designed to fit the bike. Good to see they can be adjusted to accept more by expanding the size. Most people pack way too much and can easily reduce the amount they pack. I always take 2 cargo nets to accept the extras when traveling. Theres always a way.!! Fiquering how to use the new bags has to be less complicated than the TFT screens. 👍👍🏍🏍🏍🙋‍♂️

      In my opinion it’s not a problem with side cases but central - it won’t fit 2 helmets. Of course you can pack less baggage to the vario side cases but u will still have a problem with helmets. That’s the most important for me in journey. I hate walking with helmet in my hand and my pillon hate it too

My gripes with that bike seem to have been addressed with the 1300, only a test ride will tell the tale…this maybe a naive question but I’m assuming with a usb and light that these cases are fully waterproof and the suggested internal bags are for convenience??

    Big GS Fan, on my fourth one 2019 R1250GS and love the cases. I can put my laptop bag in the side case, go to work and then put my stitch in it. Well the new bags have the corner cut so my rectangular laptop bag now won't fit in the side bag. This video is the first time I've seen a top case. The opening looks way smaller. I need the dimensions of the openings! I hope my computer bag will at least fit in the top box but it doesn't look like it. Right now they have a stop ship on the bags so am on hold on my GS purchase.

I need to be convinced to trade in a perfectly good 2017 RT, and while an improved engine and gearbox are great, if the little problems have not been resolved, I can live with my clunky quick-shifter. I 'm close to ordering one but there is a couple of features I'm really not sure of which are Really not sure about having plastic panniers after a couple of years how well will the plastic buttons and adjuster ? we all know how brittle plastic gets over time. Would like to know how well they deal with a side topple over / crash as the metal ones you know can be bent back in shape does the pannier split? Shame I cant use my old panniers which are metal why I have to spend another 1400 euros to get these guess there be alot of old metal panniers for sale soon. I also think about how good they be for not being broken into will it be easy to pull the top part from the bottom part when at full height Cant wait to take one on a test ride. The issue with these cases is they don’t hold a lot even in the expanded state. The “infinitely adjustable” claim is just marketing. Hard side panniers are definitely not a good choice for dirt riding due to the high risk of leg injuries when you drop the bike. Experienced off road riders always use soft side luggage. Sorry guys. I know it is a personal choice, but look at what serious off road adventure riders are using. Having said that, if you choose to use the GS for mostly tar road touring, then the hard cases are excellent.😁👍

    In this case, I'll stick to my 60 liter topcase and sidecases with lowered exhaust that fits 2 helmets and complete biker gear. The 'expansion ' charger plug and light is a nice gimmick, but still the scoop for the exhaust? I realy wonder who will realy take the time to screw in the cases before riding. I think 90% will screw it out 1 time, and that forget all about it.
    also curious to find out how many batteries will run flat, because of 'leaking' electrics.

  • @bens5186

    Sorry… you know what else it adjustable? Roll top soft luggage. The bonus is they act as cushions in a drop, fully water and dust proof, and doesn’t create a hazard to crush your or a passengers leg in a drop. Want to charge something in it? Throw a battery bank in there. The only argument for hard luggage that I think holds up is for a top box if being used as a backrest side luggage should always be soft.

    Am thinking where to put my extra tools, some spareparts, air pump, tyre patches (worm type). Have to "migrate" from hard aluminum panniers to new box system. Let's see how I could play around once had my hand on it 😂

    Here's a question, the case is made by SW-Motech, so does that mean luggage can be purchased direct from them?

    I just can’t put my GS helmet (62-63cm) in the side case.

    hmm. side opening along with the complexity of adjustment for a small size increase that most people will probably just leave in the max position given it is only a 42mm difference.... Engineers were on holidays were they? They gave the job to the intern.

    In my own experience, the central locking is OK, very convenient. A ligh on both cases... not very useful. The USB for charging, definetly a bit plus.
    The size adjustment it's handy if you are one of those riders that always have the cases on the bike, like me. Are they empty?. Narrow profile then. Need to get the helmet in, or travel?. Extend it.
    The downside, they have less capacity than other cases.

    What is the price of this motorcycle? Will BMW team consider discount for the university students or any facilities to purchase this motorcycle?

    Why haven't you showed the right one, Scott? The gripe I always had with GS's (all types) is that the right one is smaller than the left and next to useless. When 2 of them are expanded, the bike is as wide as a car :). Why BMW couldn't make the exhaust not to be in the way of the panier beats me. Other ADV bikes do just that.

      Not needed, it's the same as the other side just 1 liter less.

    You forgot one main thing, the price (maybe on purpose?) I notice the top box is €615, I wonder how much the two side boxes are?
