Just because you mentioned Friesenjung:
"Friesenjung" is originally from German comedian Otto Waalkes who wrote the song in 1993 and means "boy from East Friesia". It's a humorous cover from Stings "Englishman in New York" with the story of living in Friesia. Others say that people from Friesia are very identifiable due to their special mentality and culture (small towns, lots of farms, much space, interacting with the North Sea, etc.).
They even speak their own language "Friesisch" (eng.: friesian) which is very similar to "plattdeutsch" (eng.: low German). And for the story to make sense: both are also similar to Dutch, since East Friesia is located on the German side of the border with the Netherlands. The songs is basically about the things that unify Dutch people and Friesian-German people.
In 2022, German rapper Ski Aggu who was not very famous back then, he released his first album. But in 2023, he invited Dutch musician Joost Klein to make a collaboration and they picked "Friesenjung" by Otto Waalkes (which makes sense since it's a German-Dutch co-production and the story of "Friesenjung" is located near the German-Dutch border). They even brought Otto Waalkes into the new version who is 75 years old today.
The new version of "Friesenjung" skyrocketed in the German charts, radio stations, etc. and was the first No.1 song of all 3 musicians in Germany. It has been 42 weeks in German charts and was one of the most played songs last year in Germany.
Now since Joost Klein will be at Eurovision for the Netherlands, many people here in Germany were begging Ski Aggu to compete for Germany. Like, if they can send Joost, we wanna see Ski! 😅
And as you mentioned correctly, Joost's song "Europapa" is about his father and also his dreams of a unified European Union for a better future for his kids. Joost is able to travel through Europe because his parents' generation made it possible. For all of us. And the song is also a thankfully meant hymn for the possibilities that we have in todays Europe. We may have different languages, different backgrounds and different cultures in some way but we are all Europeans! 😌
I would like to add that the Netherlands has a region called West Friesland (the North of the province North Holland) and also a province called Friesland bordering the Waddenzee were Joost was born and raised. Frisian is even the second official language of the Netherlands. So Joost Klein is actually a real Friesenjung, which is probably the reason Joost and Ski chose to cover the Otto Waalkes song.
