This is only the second time I have happened upon a talk by Mr Gnani. The first was in a discussion regarding a national language and the role of Hindi (if memory serves) in a national channel. Both times I have been impressed by the depth and clarity of his analysis, more so perhaps because it was unexpected.

1. Andal was found under a tulsi tree. Hence her origins/parents are unknown.
Refutation : we have similar origins to Sita, she also was found on a furrow. So she disappeared inside the earth.
So did Radha appeared in the garden.
It may appear as imagination or story for atheists. But that is a different point. The idea is just because Andal's parents are not known doesn't mean she had illegitimate parents. She is said to be the avatar of bhooma devi. She gives birth to all living beings.
2. Andal's poetry expresses sexual interests.
Refutation: Only those sections of her writings becomes appealing to media and public because generally, human frailties appeal to sexual descriptions. People often ask question about Khajuraho and Kamasutra and other temple descriptions of naked men and women. They can read this link
I have not read much of Andal's works. But as a general understanding of the mood of the Vaishnava acharyas, they express different aspects of Bhakti - philosophical, compassion to beings, esoteric relationships with The lord. And it is utterly ridiculous to consider The lord and his stalwarts devotees description as sexual.. I have never seen one acarya glorifying sexual activities of human or devata like Indra. Why is that exception for Krishna alone? And that too across centuries and across the land of Bharath?
3. Andal's disappearance and so many other prominent people disappearance are just imaginary stories...
Refutation: just see the hypocrisy. Part of the section, which is seemingly sexual is not story or imagination. But something about the divine appearance or disappearance is a story..
Just because you are not a witness does not mean that phenomenon is not possible or does not exist. We have such history for many great devotees.
4. The context in which Vairamuththu quoted the term "devadasi" should be understood in the context of the term in seventh century, as a dignified term.
Refutation : it is more likely the original author of the quoted book did not use it in that way. The title of the book "Indian movement: some aspects of dissent, protest and reform" and the usage of the word Andal "herself" was a devadasi,. Why the author is specifically saying "herself"?
And if Vairamuththu had indeed has used the term devadasi in the technically dignified way of 7th century, there is no necessity for him to say a prelude "கலாசார அதிர்ச்சி தரத்தக்க முடிவுக்குச் சில ஆய்வாளர்கள் ஆட்படுகிறார்கள்." And a conclude "பக்தர்கள் இதை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள மாடார்கள்.
ஆனால் ஆணாதிக்க எதிர்ப்பாளர்களும், சமய சமூக மறுப்பாளர்களும் இதை எண்ணிப் பார்ப்பார்கள்."
If vairamuthu had indeed used the term in a dignified way why devotees won't accept it?
Either Vairamuthu spoke a nasty opinion on Andal or not, he quoted an American author who did not evaluate Andal properly. So at least one thing is we can make out. One thing is that is very clear is that Vairamuthu did not use that word "devadasi" as a dignified term. So either vairamuthu or people should not use that excuse that he used "devadasi" as a dignified term.
5. Andal is an imaginary character because no child of 15 can write such deeper literature.
Refutation : I have not done any research on andal. But why do you assume if none of your generations can do at 15, that should be the norm in 7th century and that too for a child who is said to have a divine origin and disappearance? Don't we have special children with special abilities even in our current society
?

1. There was no Indiana University in this subject
2. SC Malik complied around 15 papers submitted by different communist in 1975
3. Two Kerala communist professor made a quote about Shri Andal with reference to the book written in 1923 by TA Gopinath ( coward to escape himself that he has not written or in other words bastard)
4. By last, in the 1923 book published there was no references made to Shri. Andal in that way.
So to conclude, some communist had spit venom under fake reference with aptly our communist Mr. Vairamuthu quotes now under the name of Indiana University..
One agenda for all of them.. once British made us to feel shame of being Indian, now they want us to feel shame as Hindu.. please never allow to succeed..

I agree with the comments of Gnani. He has analysed the issue without any bias. The terminology used in those days had carried a different meaning i.e., 'Devarkku AdiyaaL'. It means a devoted servant to God. Later on the said usage got tainted. The two works supposed to have been written by AndaaL cannot be attributed to her who is said to have merged in the Lord's feet at the age of fifteen. Moreover Vairamuthu had only referred to a research paper. He did not uphold that opinion as correct. It is for the Learned among the vainavites to disprove that opinion. It is good for all not to make it an issue of either theism or atheism. Tamils are already very much divided in the name of castes. Andaal whether imaginative or real personality is held in high exteem by Tamils in general.

Rest in peace sir Gnani. Although you were a brhamin by birth you adapted atheist path and hence were able to present your views with a very different perspective. I don't think your last speech should be subjected for any debate but even if it happens I would consider that as a tribute to your valour. Your point of view clearly explained why and what BJP is attempting to do. Gnani like you should have lived long at least to keep educating common people like us who wished for a neutral views and voice. Your sudden demise has definitely left a void in the arena of fair and free press & media. You will be remembered always.
