never underestimate the single shot. Their value lies in their mechanical simplicity and reliability.
This is, far and away, the best video on this weapon. Thank you.
Thanks I appreciate it
Very good job in explaining the difference between an ejector and an extractor type shotgun.
Thanks
I grew up with single shot shotgun I have a couple of New England ones today, love them.
Excellent job showing this shotgun. I have the model 301 in 20 guage and just love it. Mine is camo and came with the extra full choke. I got several carlson chokes at a good price for it now. Mine had a built in rail on top and I put a cheap red dot on it. You got a good price on it was at Whittaker guns here in western Kentucky and they wanted 169 for the 20 and 410. Wanted a 12 guage but have a mossberg 88 in 12 guage so I wanted a 20 guage. Buffalo outdoors just showed some inserts for his single shot on 9mm and was burning up steel and some distance. Just shows how versitile these guns are.
Scott hillbilly Morgan/Kentucky it’s hard to beat the versatility of a single shot shotgun. I’ve always been intrigued by those inserts. I’ll have to check out buffalos video of that. Thanks for watching
Seems like a great knockabout, behind-the-door, or backpacking gun. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for watching 👍🏻🇺🇸
I've spent decades hunting dove with a 20 gauge 870 featherweight pump, but always brought my 12 gauge single shot goose gun, just in case everything spooked and flying REALLY high. Astonished hunters sitting around complaining in camp after a poor morning, me downing specks in the sky from a beach chair right next to them, often completing their limits for them. Now thinking dove from a 20 gauge single would be fun, as 20 gauge is perfect for this hunt. BTW, if you're traversing through desert washes for a few hours because your initial position plan failed, you will VERY quickly appreciate a super light and maneuverable shotgun.
Yes for sure on appreciating the weight
Great video man,love the gun.
Thanks for watching 👍🏻🇺🇸
Good job soja I really like this gun I am thinking of getting one
Great review man ! Im getting one this weekend !!!
TyrranicalT-Rad, I appreciate the comment. I believe you will be well satisfied. Thanks for watching
@@farmer-0639 thats a real nice gun you have their . Im going Wednesday to buy a stevens 301 20 gauge single shot shot gun new for 175.00.i hust sold my h. R 12 gauge pump shot gun . I had it for 5 years and only shot 3 shells out of it .
Rickey Bullington I would love to own a 20 gauge as well. Thanks for watching.
What a fun little shot-gun. Must get me one. Love single-shots.
made in Commie China makes it a no buy though.
If you own a car it's got parts made in China and everywhere else besides America
This was a really informative review for 10 minutes. Up where I am I can get a Maverick 88 for like $50 more so I'm leaning that way but thanks for the run-down.
I highly doubt you are buying working maverick 88 shotguns for less than $150
@@bowlofrice8 I'm in Nova Scotia, Canada. That Stevens runs about $300 CAD at Cabelas and you can get a Maverick for $350.
Now just need to start making these in rifle calibers like the old H&Rs.
It’s a good start toward a combo gun.
Thank you for the great review.....
Thanks for watching 👍🏻🇺🇸
With the push button forearm release, it would be nice if Stevens offered a package where you were sold a receiver/buttstock and several barrels, so that you could use one gun for several different occasions.
That’s a good thought.
@@farmer-0639 Thank you. I thought so, too! =)
Excellent review
Thanks for watching 👍🏻🇺🇸
I’m going to look at one. Tomorrow thanks
Just bought one today for 150$. Hope it’s nice. Thanks for the vid
Thanks for watching
I bought one for the Black Friday sale for 179 very well made for the price , I'm not a fan of those Turkish made ones. it's your review that made me pull the trigger on one
Awesome glad to hear the feedback
I own one and i love it it is 5x better than the hatfield in every aspect.
I’ve heard the hatfields have terrible triggers
@@farmer-0639 they are awful triggers...
Nice review!
Thanks
Nice shotty!👍👍 Good review!
I believe I’m going to be well satisfied with it. Thanks for watching.
Really cool video.
Thanks for watching 👍🏻🇺🇸
Got one yesterday and I do like it! Shot some of my .69 roundball with home made black powder, yeeeeeeee!!!!!
my Stevens 301 has been having ejection problems. I figured out (I think) that it was from shooting the black powder and not cleaning it properly. There was some corrosion build up in the chamber, causing the empty shells to stick. I cleaned it up well with some steel wool on a big drill bit and it is nice and shiny again. I think the shells will pop out now. It has been a great gun. I got a full choke for it and am mainly using commercial birdshot and buckshot rounds. I killed some rats today with it.
Man I would love to have one of these in the Big 10!!!!!
That would be rough on the shoulder for sure. Thanks for watching 👍🏻🇺🇸
I saw a 20GA in my LGS kinda want it, I like to hike would be cool especially with slugs but I'm debating on going and finding a 12GA online or at another store
I am lucky as i own a 12guage stevens number 969 so its old but in good order a pleasure to shoot
I'm not sure how tight the Stevens 301 comes from the factory, but the old H&R shotguns and handy rifles had absolutely no play whatsoever between the barrel assembly and the receiver, when you break it down to reload. I've got the Rossi single shot, and that thing has very noticeable play. If these 301s don't have any play in them, I wouldn't mind having one even if they are Chinese made. I miss the case hardened look of the H&R receivers though......$98 right out of the box at Walmart when I bought my last in 1995. Made in Gardner, Massachusetts in the years before Remington screwed up the H&R brand.
They have zero play whatsoever. Really surprising
I subscribed just because of his voice and southern accent
Thanks for watching 👍🏻🇺🇸
Your welcome
Good video.
Appreciate it 👍🏻
Farmer-06: Regarding recoil with your 301 12 gauge, do you think that you could tolerate using it as a backup clay target gun? Let's say 50 -75 rounds. Trying to decide between the 12 or the 20, likely with a Limbsaver slip on.
Thank you for your response.
I believe you could but it wouldn’t be ideal. Recoil is definitely increased due to the weight but is still manageable. Thanks for watching
Keep doing what ur doing it’s all good I subbed
Hey I appreciate the comment and the sub. Thanks for watching
@@farmer-0639 i have one its a 20 gauge and I camo it and put a 400 luminous flashlight on it and a 5 round sleeve on the stock .I do like it a lot .
The 06 suffix is cool!!🇺🇸 💥 😎
Thanks
Nice gun at a good price!👍🏼
E James Id have to agree. Thanks for watching.
Hey there. Can you tell me if the buttpad unscrews and if the butt stock is hollow? Not sure if your familiar with them, but they make whats called a "Stack and pack" adapter which allows you to shoot 12, 20, and 410 gauge shells, plus 22LR. It stacks neatly together and Im wondering if I could store it in the buttstock for a great all around gun with lots of caliber options if need be. Thanks!
Hey the buttpad is somewhat hollow and unscrews but I dont think it would store all the adapters. Thanks for watching
Love it bro test fire it
hunting with a single shot is pure bliss
Adds a certain excitement to the hunt for sure
I was getting ready to buy one until you said it was made in Chy-na. I'll be looking around a bit more for a cheap single shot 12 gauge.
I'm not sure this is true. Savage arms supposedly manufactures in the US. I hate China-made shit and refuse to buy it. Only Made in the USA or allies. But I do think it's made in the US like all Savage arms.
@@GP-sl6uq The 301 series is manufactured for Savage Arms by Sun City Machinery Co IN CHINA
I have the Rossi single shot break open in 12 gauge with a 28 inch barrel and real wood stock. It's made in Brazil, not China, and is an excellent budget survival shotgun. It came with a .22 magnum barrel and I think I paid $125 brand new several years back. Check this one out.
Might as well buy one now. when harris/biden are done that's all you will be able to find, if you can find a gun and ammo at all....
Okay, you do that, boomer. Meanwhile return everything else that you already own that is made in China.
I've got an H&R .410 that I purchased at K-Mart in the early eighties. I caught it on sale and paid $26.00 for it. It still looks like new. It has no warning stamped on it, and no, it's not for sale.
That’s awesome. Love the old H&Rs
Its loving
GOt two of these of my grandfather, they were just his tractor guns, I wanted to replace the cracked grip stock, cold blue it, and I have a little generic but decent holographic red dot with like 5 reticle choices to mound if I tap it into the thick breech and make a cut down (legal 18") house gun, or bitchin turkey gun. WHat do you think? I have 2, and need the stocks, I'd really like to make them a winter project
I think mine has a extruded in full choke, cn't ell if I can see the concentric stretch in the barrel or it's just where it's been hanging on the felt rack most of my life. Doesn't leave a lotta options for muzzle props
I own one, it's spectacular
Does it shoot buckshot and slugs?
@@chalied7415 -- It will shoot any type of shotgun shell 3 inches or shorter (just keep in mind when shooting buck or slugs to have a skeet or improved cylinder choke in it)
Sorry for my ignorance but would it damage the barrel to keep the chokes in and use those gun adapters to shoot 9mm, .45, .357, 22s, etc?
Not at all the adapter itself is actually the barrel so it never touches the barrel of the shotgun when it fired out.
You know you can buy those Barrel inserts and shoot just about any caliber handgun, and some rifle rounds as well. I think Excalibur makes a whole entire set.
Those would be a great addition
MSRP on this has gone up to $206. But since gun prices are up across the board, it is still a lot of gun for the money.
Biden-omics at work
Bought 1 today. Can't wait to shoot it.
Single shot in 20 or 26 perfect Ruffed Grouse gun for the thicket!
I agree with that. Thanks for watching 👍🏻🇺🇸
Great video! Question for any owners of this gun, would you consider this for trap/skeet shooting?
Yes, but make sure to choose the write choke tube for the job. I myself am new to choke tubes, but I would say either a modifyed choke, or full to start.
If you’re on a budget yes
Good everyday gun built to last !!!!
Thanks for watching 👍🏻🇺🇸

Excellent fun gun when a second shot is not critical,,,, Do you know if this is available with a 28 inch barrel ..
As far as I know it is only available in 26 in. Thanks for watching
I been wanting to get one to use on my farm. They are always sold out. How does it shoot, high, low or dead-on?
Shoots dead on in my experience pattern wise
Nice looking gun I cut my teeth on an H&R wished they still made them
Me too
Can you shoot steel shot through it?
Gostei muito do vídeo. Gostaria de ver um vídeo com está espingarda atirando!!!
Talk about judging a book by its cover I looked by this as a cheap gun but this actually doesn’t look bad at all after watching this video
Thanks for watching 👍🏻🇺🇸
Pretty good review, the only thing missing was the clambering. Is it 2-3/4" or will it accept 3".
Thanks for all the information.
I know right I want one of these good all around gun turkey whatever
It will take both sizes of shells.
It will accept both. Thanks for watching
I wish they still made the Stevens Model 94. I have 2 of them and they were outstanding single barrels. This one looks like a Harrington & Richardson knockoff.
Early in the video he said that it is a modified copy of an old H&R shotgun.
Is the stock hollow so you can carry a bit of kit in it? Have to take off that butt pad to see.
Yes it is somewhat. Thanks for watching
@@farmer-0639 -- You could probably put something in the stock to make the gun heavier if you wanted to cut down on the recoil.
Can you please talk in depth about the modified choke? What type of loads can you shoot through a modified choke safely? And what loads can you not shoot through it?
Can shoot any thing though a mod, slugs ( foster style or thug slug styles) buck shot, bird, etc. One exception, don't think steel shot is good for it, copper plated is ok. I only shoot lead so zero problems for me,
@@outdoorsythings2573 What about a rifled buck shot slug in a NON rifled shotgun???
A rifled slug,, is just a regular slug, the rifleing is just cut into the slug to help it swag down though a tighter choke. Shooting sabots would be pointless they need a rifled shotgun barrel, if though a smooth bore, they will just tumble and key hole
@@outdoorsythings2573 Ok.. so sabbots are only for rifled shotgun
@@outdoorsythings2573 got it thanks
I just bought this gun. What is the best ammo for this gun if I just want to go target shooting? Thanks
I’m a big fan of federal 1 1/8 ounce 2 3/4 in low brass loads for target shooting. Thanks for watching
Local gun shop has these. Thinking about picking one up. Is it pretty accurate and reliable? Looks like a sweet shooter.
John Spartan not done a lot of shooting with it yet, but I believe it’s going to be a good find for the price.
Anyone know if it would be possible to drill and tap this to add a scope? Thanks
Stevens makes some single-shots that come with a removeable rail for adding optics. I have a 20-gauge that is so equipped. It is one of their camo-stocked versions. I don't know if the black-stocked versions are drilled and tapped.
I think the rail equipped models would be a better option for you if you’re looking to mount an optic as Gregb is referring to below
all h&r or new england arms single shots came with ejectors not extractors. when i sent my rifled slug gun in to be fitted with a smooth bore barrel for shot use,it came back cut and fitted for win-choke tubes. btw no chinese gun for me.
Good restatement of what I said in the video 👍🏻 Thanks for watching.
Still happy with your 301? Is the forearm connection still as solid as day 1? By the way, excellent review.
Old School Skater very pleased with it thus far and yes it’s just as solid as ever. Thanks for watching.
I bought one for a lightweight turkey gun/backpacking-self- reliance gun. I honestly wish I had spent the extra money for a better gun. High brass turkey loads never fail to get stuck. The gun shoots consistently 12" low at 30 yards. My old Stevens model 94 20 gauge does not have this problem. Search the internet and you'll find several reports of this gun shooting low. I figured out resting the bead on top of the hammer, prior to cocking put the shot where I want it at 30 yards. I've also had the break lever go limp and not break open the gun. I'll be buying a more reliable gun next year.
That’s unfortunate mine had no such issues
Does that gun have a smoothe or rifles barrel
It has a smooth barrel. Thanks for watching
It's a really recent video !
I would have liked it more if they ditched the manual safety and put the money into sling swivels instead and also offered a wood stock option. Oh well guess I have to settle for this instead....😩
Agreed
i just bought one for 130 brand new 20 gauge
theammoreaper I don’t think you’ll be disappointed
Can you change the choke tube on that gun?
Yes. The barrel is threaded for Win/Moss-style screw-in chokes.
Yes
This also takes mossberg chokes
Edit: so my gun had to go to the factory the ejector was getting stuck and wasn't ejecting shells it happened 6 times in 75 rounds of shooting with 3 different kinds of ammo Winchester, federal and Rio that's allied put through it it had 1 stuck with the Rio 2 with the federal and 3 with the Winchester
That sucks hope they got it worked out
@@farmer-0639 they did and the gun worked great bagged me 2 turkeys some ducks as well it was a fun shotgun I gave it to my friend cause I wanted to sell it but I gave it to him since he didn't have a 12 gauge and he wanted one for hunting
Does it have extractors or ejectors?????
Ejector
Did you ever actually shoot it ? How was the kick ?
Yes kick is more than average but likely due to it being lightweight.
What are chokes exactly?
Tubes that can be screwed into the muzzle of your gun to change the “tightness” of the pattern of your shots. Thanks for watching 👍🏻🇺🇸
I got the same gun...20 gauge.
Great in the 20 I’m sure
What choke tubes fit these guns
theammoreaper win chokes
@@farmer-0639 Winchester chokes
theammoreaper yes
Got one for 62$
Without the ffl*
Absolute steal
Will it take extra full choke?
You can put any Win/Moss-style 12-gauge choke in it.
Yes as gregb said below
How does it shoot?
It shoots well. Thanks for watching.
Will it shoot slugs?
Yes, as long as you don't have too tight a choke in it. The choke it comes with can be removed, making it a cylinder bore.
Can’t find these near me.
They’re very popular so I’m sure they sell out quickly.
Which country màde this
China
You mentioned the Hatfield single-shots. My brother has one, and the trigger on it is atrocious.
That’s what I’ve heard. Truly tragic. I love their folding design.
I like the way it breaks down like a H&R and ejects the spent shell. Some newer single shots break too far, almost double and still don't eject the shell, those I do not like.
I can't call the Stevens a "budget" gun when they cost as much as a pump does. I paid $59 for my H&R 40 years ago and today I think a single shot shouldn't cost more than $100.
Since the value of the US dollar has dropped by over half in the past 40 years, your H&R would cost you north of $120 today, so anything under $100 today would be a piece of trash more useful as a club than a gun.
Times have sure changed

I was seriously getting ready to buy this from the local Walmart till I heard it's made in China. Real shame they built it there.
It's not like the gun factory is going bankrupt without you buying. Better remove the 28nm Chinese auto chip from your Ford F150 and Mustang too to show us your determination of boycotting Chinese stuff lol
@@FC-ue1yc FYI, Ford is beginning to produce their chips in the US. If you're going to say something, try to make it sound smart. Also, I'm not the only one who makes a point to not purchase based on this issue.
I will stick with the old stuff.
I am more of a fan of the old single shots as well but I can see the value and usefulness in these as well
Nah, that's junk, you NEED a Benelli Super 90 even if and when you NEED one shot. Why? Because it's just not the same unless the gun goes... BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! within a matter of a few seconds.
Now for some serious input. Haven't used this one much but it does handle well, has a nice balanced weight, it's well machined, it operates smooth and the overall length is fair.
Good value for what it is
A 20” barrel with choke tubes and lose that stupid safety and it would be a lot better.
TryNsurviveN I would definitely like to see a shorter version. Thanks for watching
If you don't like the safety, just ignore it.
i think you mispelled the title its a savage
It’s a “Savage Stevens” meaning savage is the parent company. It would be kinda like saying “that truck shouldn’t say Chevrolet Silverado on it should say GM Silverado”. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
