    Excellent job showing this shotgun. I have the model 301 in 20 guage and just love it. Mine is camo and came with the extra full choke. I got several carlson chokes at a good price for it now. Mine had a built in rail on top and I put a cheap red dot on it. You got a good price on it was at Whittaker guns here in western Kentucky and they wanted 169 for the 20 and 410. Wanted a 12 guage but have a mossberg 88 in 12 guage so I wanted a 20 guage. Buffalo outdoors just showed some inserts for his single shot on 9mm and was burning up steel and some distance. Just shows how versitile these guns are.

    I've spent decades hunting dove with a 20 gauge 870 featherweight pump, but always brought my 12 gauge single shot goose gun, just in case everything spooked and flying REALLY high. Astonished hunters sitting around complaining in camp after a poor morning, me downing specks in the sky from a beach chair right next to them, often completing their limits for them. Now thinking dove from a 20 gauge single would be fun, as 20 gauge is perfect for this hunt. BTW, if you're traversing through desert washes for a few hours because your initial position plan failed, you will VERY quickly appreciate a super light and maneuverable shotgun.

      my Stevens 301 has been having ejection problems. I figured out (I think) that it was from shooting the black powder and not cleaning it properly. There was some corrosion build up in the chamber, causing the empty shells to stick. I cleaned it up well with some steel wool on a big drill bit and it is nice and shiny again. I think the shells will pop out now. It has been a great gun. I got a full choke for it and am mainly using commercial birdshot and buckshot rounds. I killed some rats today with it.

    I'm not sure how tight the Stevens 301 comes from the factory, but the old H&R shotguns and handy rifles had absolutely no play whatsoever between the barrel assembly and the receiver, when you break it down to reload. I've got the Rossi single shot, and that thing has very noticeable play. If these 301s don't have any play in them, I wouldn't mind having one even if they are Chinese made. I miss the case hardened look of the H&R receivers though......$98 right out of the box at Walmart when I bought my last in 1995. Made in Gardner, Massachusetts in the years before Remington screwed up the H&R brand.

    Hey there. Can you tell me if the buttpad unscrews and if the butt stock is hollow? Not sure if your familiar with them, but they make whats called a "Stack and pack" adapter which allows you to shoot 12, 20, and 410 gauge shells, plus 22LR. It stacks neatly together and Im wondering if I could store it in the buttstock for a great all around gun with lots of caliber options if need be. Thanks!

    I bought one for a lightweight turkey gun/backpacking-self- reliance gun. I honestly wish I had spent the extra money for a better gun. High brass turkey loads never fail to get stuck. The gun shoots consistently 12" low at 30 yards. My old Stevens model 94 20 gauge does not have this problem. Search the internet and you'll find several reports of this gun shooting low. I figured out resting the bead on top of the hammer, prior to cocking put the shot where I want it at 30 yards. I've also had the break lever go limp and not break open the gun. I'll be buying a more reliable gun next year.

    I like the way it breaks down like a H&R and ejects the spent shell. Some newer single shots break too far, almost double and still don't eject the shell, those I do not like.
    I can't call the Stevens a "budget" gun when they cost as much as a pump does. I paid $59 for my H&R 40 years ago and today I think a single shot shouldn't cost more than $100.

    • @gregb6469
      @gregb6469 Před rokem

      Since the value of the US dollar has dropped by over half in the past 40 years, your H&R would cost you north of $120 today, so anything under $100 today would be a piece of trash more useful as a club than a gun.

    Nah, that's junk, you NEED a Benelli Super 90 even if and when you NEED one shot. Why? Because it's just not the same unless the gun goes... BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! within a matter of a few seconds.
    Now for some serious input. Haven't used this one much but it does handle well, has a nice balanced weight, it's well machined, it operates smooth and the overall length is fair.
