    I found this video as I was searching for content my daughter could use on her school report. The report is on someone in her family who has died...she chose her grandpa whom she never had a chance to get to know (she was born in Nov 1995)! He was my hero...you have no idea how much it warms my heart to know he touched so many other lives as well. Thank you for sharing...Jayme Taylor (Mel's youngest daughter)

      Jayme , She sure had one talented Grand dad, & though I'm a guitar player the first real Rock albums i heard were from the Ventures with Don on drums. Still have those records & they still play . I used them as a learning tool though it was many years before i could even attempt to play as Nokie did, never really got there on his level but i found my own way to play. . While in the 6th grade it was Mel & Buddy Rich that had me try two years of drum classes but i could never play my meager little set as we lived in a townhouse & every time i practiced the neighbors would call the rental office & complain it was to loud . I hated practice pads & so i gave up & in 67 i turned to guitar. In 74 i was lucky to see the Ventures in Washington DC & Mel , Nokie Bob & Don just were as awesome as you like. For your daughter she must be mighty proud & Mel is still influencing drummers everywhere despite all the incredible players we know as todays modern drummers. As for the Ventures they still hold up with todays best & they did it without all the pedals & monster drum kits we have come to see as normal. If you have time or really see this comment this is what I've taken as the direction i went in . It's not Nokie as no is but it's these influences that made me want to play. If you wish to leave me a comment please feel free but leave them on my post not here . I thank you & Thank you Ventures for such great music. czcams.com/video/RHj04fFTrZI/video.html

      Perhaps if you played drums you'd have a different feeling about his abilities. I've played since these guys first became popular in the early 1960's and Mel Taylor is not even in the same universe as the good rock drummers.

      @@alcyone9361 What makes others better? Or what makes Taylor only mediocre?

    • @ytubepuppy
      @ytubepuppy Před 3 lety +1

      @@davidbrand391 One of the "popular" drummer who was even worse on a trap set was Sandy Nelson. Mel Taylor is OK but not in the same universe as Neil Peart, John Bonham, Steve Gadd, Billy Cobham, Carl Palmer, Villie Colailuti, Nick Mason, Roger Taylor, or John Miceli, to name a few...not including me.
      I won't go into the jazz/swing drummers like Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Ed Shaughnessy, Joe Morello, Dave Weckl, and Louie Bellson.
      And I won't even discuss Ringo Starr, Ginger Baker, or Keith Moon. I almost gag every time I see someone mention Ringo in a discussion of "greatest drummers".

      +BigBill Lucas Time out, old son. I'm hearing technical skill, excellent timing, good use of the kit, and most importantly Mel Taylor was one of the most influential drummers who ever picked up sticks simply by virtue of influencing some of the greatest drummers ever with his work, particularly "Walk Don't Run". How does that not qualify? And, more importantly, who do YOU consider great?

      James, Many say the same things about the great buddy Rich , it's just not so. When you get used to Terry Bozzio & Neil Peart you tend to view things with rose colored glasses . In the days of the Ventures Mel was considered one of the best rock players & he was. To do as he did with a simple kit like Buddy who can't be compared to Mel or modern drummers they both got more out of simple kit than most new drummer get from massive kits . Don't get me wrong those guys are jaw droppers.
