A month ago, a dream came true. One of my adult children asked me to make a baby quilt for an expectant co-worker. I was needed again. I drafted up a couple of designs and the mom-to-be chose this one. Well it was so fun and fast to make, I made three more for my video PREWASH OR NOT PREWASH YOUR FABRICS - SHRINKAGE.
So many of you asked for the pattern so here it is. And for this video I made several more quilt tops. Which is great as I realized that I still have several more shrinkage tests to do and I’ll need more quilts. :)
Super cute easy pattern! I love it!
+Cheryl Land 😊
This is a great way for me to start quilting again. I don't have any relatives or friends who might need a baby quilt, but there are a number of charities (Project Linus comes to mind) and family shelters where baby quilts are always needed. So, this is going to be my go-to pattern for beginning my baby quilt projects for the next few months -- thanks so much!
@@davisterry8261 it's a scam!

"Be careful of your biases: they can stretch and distort." What a great piece of wisdom for all of us in all parts of life!
So true
Not sure how I missed this video, but 3 years later, it’s so nice to see the growth in your Subscription numbers: from 77k to now 333k!! Way to go Karen! (I feel like I can say “I followed you when” - you posted videos of your Dollarama hacks. So much has happened since then. To all of us. Kudos on your growth and perseverance through it all, Karen 🙂)
When I make quilts for my grandchildren I put their names in four or five places using the same thread color as the area I am sewing in. They get a big kick out of searching for their names.
I’m thinking of making a bunch of baby quilts and leave them in the cedar chest. Each new mom picks one when a baby is born
Oh Karen! It is not easy! I opened the seams three times and I ended up cutting four more blocks for each corner. Ended up having to read about value again. And finally I said ‘no’, took a different fabric, did not worry about color or value and then, it worked. Thank you for the pattern. I wish I would be able to send you a picture of the finished product. Take care and I’m looking forward to your next video. ❤
Thank you Karen. Your videos are a delight to watch and your techniques are always straight forward and easy to follow.
Thank you...I appreciate you saying that
I have super bad adhd and your videos are so nd friendly. Thank you!
This is going to be my first quilt...yes, because a baby is coming! Wish me luck. Thank you so much for breaking it down so clearly!
How did you get on? Planning my first quilt but it all seems so complicated 😕
@@seahorsesalt4386 It went pretty well! I did’t make a quilt sandwich with binding. I made the quilt top, then chose fleece in a coordinating color, sewed right sides together and turned, then stitched in the ditch. The new mom uses it for “tummy time.” :)
@@tovaks love it xx
Always enjoy seeing a notification that you have a new video. Thanks for a fresh 'palate cleansing' pattern.
Thank you for watching. I too like to do a fast fun quilt in between the bigger projects.
You give such thorough directions Karen....thank you!
Hopefully you like thorough😊
I'm only about half way through your video & just had to stop to comment, lest I forget when I'm done. I've never made a quilt before, but I've been planning a few in my head for a little while. I just started watching quilt videos yesterday, but I had already assumed &/or figured out most of the questions I had, so I have a general idea of "the things of which you speak", but I must say..... I really like your video. It is detailed, yet simple & in plain english (AKA words, not a comment on anybody's accent). You give all of the little extra detials that other CZcamsrs assume new quilters will know without it being too much for the ones who already do. I love the graphics that you put in for the cuts. A few of the videos I watched were not that clear & this will be really helpful for those that need the visual. Your video is simple, straight forward & to the point. And, not filled with a bunch of "Ummms". Extra bonus points for that! I will definitley be checking out your other videos & subscribing.
It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. Thank you for the free pattern.
Thank you. I enjoyed this one a lot
Just love your videos! Quick, easy, right to the point no fluff and blah blah blah! Thank you so much, your the best!!!
This will be perfect! Thank you for your quick, easy & FREE patterns. 🙂
Use of starch on the fabric would ease the problem of the bias stretching. Thanks for the pattern.
I’m not experienced with starch...I think I need to take it for a test drive
Thank you for the pattern. I love baby quilts! Can't wait to try it.
Thank you for all your advice. Really great advice.
I love large blocks, so really appreciate this pattern. Thanks!
I made this quilt today and completed it in 10 hours. This was the first quilt I completed. The pattern was easy to follow and fun to see. Thanks for the video and pattern.
🎉🎉🎉 well done
Karen, I drug out my box of mount scrapmore and ironed, neatly cut and arranged most of the box. All of this is thanks to you. I still have a few more pieces to iron and cut even edges on but I feel so much better having them all ready to sew. But now I may need to cleanse my palate and try this quilt. Lol, it’s for a baby shower. Thank you 🙏 you’re an inspiration.
Thank you so much for this pattern, it was just what I was looking for, as my first quilt in general, that will go to my baby granddaughter. I genuinely appreciate showing all these sewing details which will make it or break it for the quilt execution. This is much appreciated.
A friend of mine had a great idea. She could not make a quilt she said but through out the months and into years she saved fabric scraps from sewing garments for herself and five children. Friends saved their scraps for her as well. She had shelves lined with paper grocery bags filled with scraps by color or fabric. Whenever anyone had either a baby or grandchild ( more common), she would measure out a nice square, baby size, dig around for pink or blueish scraps and do a crazy quilt top. She went to the thrift store and bought a soft large blanket for batting and some baby blanket for backing. Sewed it up, and voila..a lovely personal blanket for baby.
One time she made the blanket for a new mother and fishing around found all she needed for a girl. She presented the quilt and the grandmother gasped in surprised. The totally random quilt was made with many many scraps of fabric the grandmother had made for her daughter, the new mother who was twenty three years old. This was a bit long but a great story.
Thank you! This helped my best friend and I make a beautiful quilt together. We are first time quilters and are so happy with the result.
Love this one ... quick and easy, and so many possibilities!
Yes...it looks so different with different fabrics
Thank you for all of you wonderful videos. I love your work and your teaching technique!!!!
Love your squirrel fabric! I have a fat quarter set that, once opened wasn’t what I was expecting-they will work beautifully with this! Thanks Karen!
Love your teaching style , music & links. I’ll be watching them all. Thanks for sharing.
I love watching your videos. Nothing better than a cup of coffee and you on a Sunday morning. You have so many great ideas. I've organized my stash thanks to you and I'll be making lots more quilts. I have a co-worker having a grandbaby and I was wondering about a pattern. This is perfect with my fat quarters I had save for it.
Love the tip about using a cuticle stick!

I enjoy your videos. I learn so much and I really appreciated the color tutorials!
Just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate your stash buster quilts and would like to see more of your ideas. Thank you. So glad I found you last year before the craziness began here in New York!
Thank you 🤗
I love your videos and this pattern is perfect! Thanks for the free download!
You're welcome
This video came at a perfect time as I just received a baby shower invitation and it is in two and a half weeks! The parents love sports and I found some fabric with different types of sports balls on it, so I plan to make this quilt for them at our Guild's retreat next week. Thanks so much for all your wonderful videos. I feel like we are virtually having coffee together. TFS.
Thank you for the free quilt pattern. This quilt will be fun to make.
I had fun 🎉
As usual....excellent! This is great!
😊 thank you for watching
So excited I got this one done!! I wish I could upload a pic!
You have NO IDEA how much you saved my tushy! I have an embroidery project to do for a baby, and need a last minute 'something' to go along with it. Will post the end result to you in FB when done!!!

Hi Karen, almost neighbors, Mississauga I can’t tell you how happy you’ve made me finding your channel is changing everything I wanted to achieve from quilting, I was in a guild but found ,, the “seasoned quilters” reluctant to teach or spend the time with any newbies, that’s me☺️ anyways Thank You so very much for sharing your knowledge and experience with tips and tricks, do’s and don’ts now that I have a good machine and a store of fabric I’m hoping to do something with it, If you ever teach classes in person count me in!, I’d luv to attend Happy Quilting, Susan ❄️🇨🇦

Another excellent video! The pattern is great, thank you for the free download. I appreciate the cutting details and sewing/pressing tips. I’m not a new Quilter but I’m not an expert either. I always like reviewing , even the basics , there might be a tip that I can use to make my piecing better. I love easy and your suggestions are perfect 👌 visually stunning with easy construction!
Thank you The little things can make a big difference in results 😊
Just love how easy and quick this pattern is I want to make my nephews two sons Christmas quilts and this will be perfect. I just love your videos thanks .❤️

Going to make this for my friends baby due in November...thank you for the video and pattern
Thank you for another great video. I may use this to make a lap quilt by making 4 big blocks and sashing them together. I just received a purple sofa and need a new snuggle quilt.

Perfect timing! I hadn't made a baby quilt in ages, and I recently found out that TWO of my co-workers are expecting in December - one boy, one girl. This will be my pattern for both quilts. I enjoy your videos - thanks so much!

I’m making three of these simultaneously (twins and a pregnancy announcement) and they are so fun! It’s my first quilt project (and yes I may have taken quite a big bite doing three) but it has just been so easy and fun! Though I am not doing them in a day lol

An added comment on borders: For those of us who may not get a perfect 1/4" seam allowance every time, our finished "flimsy" (I love that description for the newly completed quilt top) may not be the same dimension as yours. So, instead of cutting the strips of border fabric to the exact measurement you gave, here's what I am going to try to remember to do ... NOTE TO SELF: After cutting the border strips the correct size x width of fabric, don't sub-cut them yet. Instead, lay two border strips across the center of the flimsy (either vertical or horizontal - whichever border I decide to put on first) and cut the border strips to match the edges of the flimsy. Apply those two borders and press. Now take the border strips for the remaining axis and do the same ... lay the border strips across the center of the flimsy and cut to match the edges of the top including the two newly attached borders. This helps eliminate wavy borders due to strrrreeeetching the border strips to match the flimsy if you discover they are cut a bit too short.
Nice video 👍👍🌹🌹
Great video thank u so much ...
Glad you liked it
Good tips
Karen, I truly enjoy your videos. I have learned so much. Could you do a video on how to quilt. Thank you. I appreciate all your efforts.
Your graphics are fantastic! I love how clear your instructions are by watching the graphics swoosh from one place to another. Can you do a video on how you put the name on your binding? It's a really nice touch!
+Elena Langlois I would but the problem is that we all have different machines. I guess I could show how I use my machine and leave everyone to adapt it to theirs
Yes! Please!
@@JustGetitDoneQuilts that would be great. I'm doing a baby quilt to give at the end of the month and would love to see how to incorporate the baby's name like you did on your quilt. Thank you.
👍
Love your videos and your quilts, thank you for the inspiration. ( Pity I'm still rubbish at making them though). 🙄.
@ Annie Greenhalgh
PLEASE STOP CALLING YOUR WORK "RUBBISH"!!!
You may be inexperienced, but that doesn't make you or your quilts "rubbish". You may have trouble with some sewing techniques, but that doesn't make you or your work "rubbish" either.
Your quilt may have mistakes but whoever receives the quilt will see the love, not any "errors".
So relax...practice your techniques on scrap fabric. And just ignore anyone who tries to show off how perfect *they* are by pointing out whatever "errors" they see or imagine in your work. Just do the best you can & remember that we were all beginners at some point. *But with practice, we got better...and SO WILL YOU!*
Be well & keep on stitching,
Deb
PS: Another thing, some quilting groups have quilters who constantly lecture other quilters about how those quilters are doing things the "wrong way". They will go on and on about ironing/cutting/sewing/quilting the "RIGHT WAY." They are so annoying that some folks, including me, call them the "Quilt Police" (or QPs). They make other folks feel inferior so they feel superior to them. If you have to deal with any QPs, don't feel bad about IGNORING THEM!!
Or just say: "My quilt may not be perfect, but I love it & so will _________." Then walk away. If anyone is just going to put you down, they are not worth your time or worry.
Love your video's!!! Please do a video on making back of quilt designs I've seen you do. They are great.
It’s coming soon
I love that this is fast and easy. Thank you for showing us how to do it. I'm still waiting on the "strap postcard". I meant to write you back after you told that your dog had passed away. I know how hard that is, my HollyBear has been gone 1 year. Take care.
Kandy...both video's are on the list😊
Can you do a video on how you did the embroidery on the binding with the name? I love that! Thanks!
I love the quilt hung behind you! Do you have a video on how to do that? You are an excellent teacher! Thank you!

+Phillip Stacey Sorry...it was too small to see what type of southern cross was on it. I love when I see flags. We Quilters are from everywhere 😁
you are so clever! and I like your mistakes!
Thank you...mistakes happen 😜
Looks lovely but my brain can't follow all the piles and the sorting. Maybe down the road when i have some experience.
I’m loving your channel! So practical and relative. Looking at your set up, what do suggest is an ideal size for a cutting mat for cutting yardage? I’m a beginner but ready to move up from my 18x24 mat.
No babies coming in our extended family (that I know of ;>} ) so I'm always thinking "bigger." I really like this pattern and can visualize it in multiplies for a bigger quilt. The question will be to sash between these big units or just butt them up against one another.
The blocks finished at 16” each, a pair at 32”...so doubled at 64”. Add dashing and borders for the size that you desire
I'm going to make this as my first true quilt....the "1st" was just 2 pieces of yardage that I appliquéd letters of baby name on 1 side and then straight line quilted with batting. I'm using a flannel fat quarter set from Walmart that said "do not prewash", a baby pink flannel from Hobby Lobby that was washed & put away past year, & a 4yrd precut of pink poly cotton from Walmart that was prewashed to use for border & banking, & store bought bias tape for binding. I watched your shrinking vid that featured this quilt pattern so I'm very worried about how much this quilt will shrink & turn out. I think I'll wash the " flimsy" then add the batting(poly) & backing, wash again and then decide if it's decent enough to gift to my cousin at her march baby shower....but she is only 19 & can use all the help she can get so I'm sure even though it's not perfect she'll still like that it was specially made with love for her baby...I'm also going to hand embroider the name on it & make burp cloths & bibs with the other matching FQ set. Wish me luck!
Good luck. Just be careful mixing your prewashed fabric with unwashed as they shrink at different rates
Do you have any videos on ombre fabrics?
Another great video. Thanks so much for the clear concise instructions! Could you make a very detailed video on how to cut a 40 or 60 degree triangle using a ruler? I didn’t have a specialty ruler and it took me all day to figure it out....maybe other new quilters would be helped too. Thanks!
Great idea. I'm working on a video that I could incorporate it into
