Icebreaker | Dark Suicide Depression Poem | Sad Spoken Word Poetry

  • This is my sad, dark poem called 'Icebreaker'. It expresses what it is like to feel depressed and hopeless - so much so, that life becomes meaningless. It was written one winter's morning when I felt utterly lost, betrayed and heartbroken. My world had been taken over by anxiety and confusion.
If you are at a very difficult point in your life right now, and struggling, you are not alone. Your feelings are valid - even if it feels like no one is listening.

I think we can get sadder by surrounding ourselves with music, poetry, isolating purposefully and negative thinking
I think it's okay to "fake it til you make it " that's what I do at work I think it's okay to try to convince your own brain you are happy because sometimes that's false happiness can grow into reality

I think you raise an excellent point - and I personally agree with you. I believe that sometimes the mere practice of optimism and gratefulness can be enough to keep depression at bay.
However, I think it's also important to note that simply trying to be grateful and optimistic might not solve the true deeper cause that triggered you to feel sad in the first place.
While sadness is a natural part of life, sometimes, greater efforts and interventions might be needed to help you to get out of a very dark place - and that is okay too.
I wish you all the best for you on your journey, friend 🙂 (Stay tuned for my next poem, which will delve deeper into this topic!)

      @Poetrygirl_forever A very good question!
My advice to you would be to make sure that you’re writing poetry that you yourself enjoy and that you’re proud of. Don't just write poetry that you think will perform well - because that kind of success won't give you a sense of fulfilment or meaning. So, I encourage you to say whatever you want to say in whatever way you wish to say it. And allow yourself to explore & experiment along the way to find your own unique style 🎨
Good luck! All the best for you on your poetry journey! 🌟

Strange how looking back now, one see how life has changed little bit by bit, day by day, then suddenly everything looks different, and you are on a new road of discovery.

    lullabies of the soul
    in the space between spaces
    radiating, aura of your soul
    fragile, like time
    like glass, rippled of distortion
    like wrinkles on faces
    in the darkness between spaces
    past a kaleidoscope of light
    etching long shadows
    across the green grass
past stones of who we were
    amongst our last destinations
around tears of loss and pain
    flow small smiles and warmth
    from the heart and mind
    songs of memories and love
    lullabies of the soul

So why does it fill like the easiest way out of this misery we call life

@@Frostbite1984 I don’t know everything and I certainly don’t plan on acting like I do, especially when it comes to suicide. There are so many beautiful and ingenious thinkers which have dove into this topic and impersonating any of them would do the topic an injustice.
Personally I believe feelings, while they are an indispensable attribute to our human life, can sometimes deceive us. I may feel sorrow but sorrow for what exactly? It’s sometimes daunting to admit, I don’t know exactly what it is- because my sorrow feels so extraordinarily pervasive, coloring everything in my perception. The task of uncovering what is making me sorrowful is just as astounding an undertaking as the act of suicide. That would be why, in my opinion, suicide feels easier.

    SOPHIE - Lili
You know you don’t belong to us he said unto the child
We found you poorly in the swamp deep within the mire
Your eyes bright red by moonlight, grey blue before the fire
We knew that you were different, a difference deep and wild
And we were drawn by deepest love this pen cannot explain
No thoughts could ever pass our minds of fleeing from the pain. -
The pain of one so young and cold we took from death’s dark claws
As you grew within our hovel, submissive, bright and smart
A child, a girl with deep black curls, brown skin without a flaw
We loved you more as time passed by and death called once again
To take the man that you called Pa. You never shed a tear
You watched the Moon, you understood as Nature made its claim. -
I noticed then you hardly slept, in silent meditation deep
Things would move before your stare, you never suffered ills
You would sing verse you weren’t taught, draw creatures from their sleep
And they would sing along with you, nightbirds, raccoons and frogs
Until an orchestra of sound rose up so beautiful to hear
Surprising to myself as well, I never suffered fear. -
But when you grew past childhood, when blood began to flow
You ventured nightly through the woods following the song
That seemed to spring from all the trees, song I didn’t know
When young men came along to call, they froze at your red eyes
And went away not to return, then rumors began to grow
Fear from all the Villagers, the stories, hate and cries. -
One bright morning we were taken by a tap upon our door
Standing there all dressed in brown, four girls of Sophie’s age
They came inside and took her hand, outside a man on horse
She knew them all, they took a draught, then all sat on the floor
A chant began, rose to a scream, the sound was tempest worse
They took her then, she bade Goodbye, her happiness I saw. -
I live alone, shunned by all, inside my mind I know
When Moonlight falls and nightbirds sing I feel that I am blessed
She’s watching o’er my life and trials, she brings the sun and snow
And as I age I feel her here when chairs and tables move
A whisper low, a song I hear, the plaintive call of her pet crow.
    Blessed be.
