    Now THAT sir, is the perfect response video, i honesty can't put into words how ridiculous all of this is, people can have their own opinions, it doesn't mean you can mock or slate others because they have a different opinion, the 95 plastics are brittle, at almost 35 years old they will be, plastic becomes brittle as it ages, his machine has got dodgy balancing wheels, that is probably one of the reasons why the machine is damaged, along with general use, in my honest opinion, a Hoover or whirlpool of the same time period was built better, without much damage if any, if i were to call the 95 series crap i think it wouldn't be good, they are made to basically be repaired, almost every part can be replaced, whereas a modern machine will most likely have a sealed tub, requiring the consumer to pay (in some cases) up to 20 times the price for a whole new tub unit, almost all of the machines from the 60s, to the early 00s had splittable tubs (clipped, or bolted together), bearings could take an hour, or as little as 10 minutes to do (depending on the brand and model), whereas now, it's 90 minutes or more to replace a whole drum unit, plastics, plastics get brittle over time, especially the 95 series plastics, capacities were (of course) smaller 30 years ago, bearings lasted a good bit longer as they were of reasonable quality, spiders could be replaced on 95s, but on hoover machines of the era, it was like today, having to pay 200 or so quid for a new inner drum because the spider was riveted to the drum not bolted, and along with all of that, timers, timers were the things of the 80s that kept these beasts going, and if they went wrong, they went wrong, sometimes it was severe (like my Hotpoint WM22W that slipped it's belt though the belt was properly tensioned back in 2020) so, my closing statement is, stop all of this nonsense, nothing is perfect, we all know that we like what we like, others can disagree all they want, it's our opinion, if people were more respectful i might actually like this community a bit more, but if people do things like saying that my 3kg Zanussi is a POS, then i might as well leave everything alone for a few weeks, and go back (have done it once, it worked a good bit) I will respect anyone that has any of their own opinions of machines (personally i think that beko machines have terrible quality) and be respectful of others opinions, no more trolling would be a good one, because i HATE people that call others racial slurs, or make death threats just because that person said something the other person didn't like I have considered getting my collection off my hands multiple times, i don't want to, never really did, but when you have almost nobody to turn to, it is, in fact, very damn hard to do it on your own, i have seen beautiful machines change hands, I've seen some filled with laundry to ridiculous capacities they are literally struggling to cope with, i have experienced personally what running a machine with bad bearings for an extended period of time does to that machine, i have seen a lot in my roughly 18 months of collecting machines, had failures, successes, and made friends that respect my opinion, i respect theirs, if i ask for advice from expert (like Chris) i will usually get an answer that i can work with, make the necessary repairs and get back on track with whatever I'm doing, but i am absolutely appalled by what some people have said in this community, sometimes even against me, for asking an innocent question, such as "if i had a 9530W, what (theoretically) would i have to do to turn it into a washer dryer) seemingly the only responses to that question in a group i was in were virtually all reasonable answers, yet when i made my point of not particularly liking Beko because of their constant issues, i was kicked from the group. People need to stop being idiots, blaming their misfortunes of machines on others, taking the mick out of people for their honest opinions, and harassing people just because they didn't like what others said about a brand they liked, or a machine they were repairing, things like that I do seriously want to not re-join service wash because of the constant bickering and arguments because of little things, that are blown way out of proportion, i want this community to be supportive of each other, kind, and happy, yes we have bad days, yes, we have terrible problems with some machines we got 2nd hand, but most importantly brands, brands are a topic that is probably most talked about in this community, others as well, but if i want my own opinion, then I'll respect anyone else's, service wash was a place where i was being an idiot, to say i lost a lot the day i was kicked out was a slight understatement, everybody was there when i needed advice on my washer dryer, and general questions, but i could not stand it when the entire community seemed to be arguing, over what a single person said, i was stressed, and angry at my hobby, i have had that for 16 years for a bit of perspective, and never before was i a part of it properly, until i revealed my small collection of machines, i knew nothing about repairing them, but just about managed to make repairs, i had issues, damage was caused, some of it was idiocy, some, was by absolutely no fault of my own, and i was basically smacked about the head for it, my 9530's drum fell off a step stool onto a toolbox and was dented (my fault as i didn't lay it down), i told everyone that, some believed me (i cannot thank you enough for it) others decided i had done it on purpose, i defended myself from them, but other things such as my 9544W, was absolutely nothing to do with me at all (the 9544 was laid on its side with no protection due to my mother, who apologised, i am still a bit salty about it lol), when i told my story, many believed it, others thought i had smashed it by other means (i had not), my wm22 got sprayed with water (not my fault), i gave my 9544W a spin slider test, many thought i was playing with it (had titled it "playing", not testing) and decided to give their honest opinions on what i was doing, but others took it do far out of line it was ridiculous, i was doing it very slowly as well, not jerking it about (slider itself is very brittle), so the one thing i would like to do is repair my machines, without being slated by people that jave taken what i have done completely the wrong way and became too angry for me to do anything to respond, i need to say this, as it's a terrible thing that i don't touch on much, i am trying to get my collection working, and become a better person in general

    That brittleness of plastics can be 2 things
    1. Composition of material is bad and will degrade over time (without any help)
    2. UV exposure. Some plastics degrade from UV. While some of them will discolour quite quickly they will retain their structure and strengtht, some won"t show any visible signs of degradation, but will become extremally brittle over time

    I thoroughly enjoyed this video of just over 6 minutes, learned in a lot more in this than WW's 38 min video. I agree Chris, there's no perfect machine, rather "perfect" is just a personal preference to a machine you like but doesn't actually mean anything for a machine in general. Like you said, the 95s are practically 40 years old, the basic New Gens being 39 now! Whether the plastics were shoddy to begin with is unknown, but they all become brittle over time. Thank you for this Chris! :)

    The older hotpoints washed better and quicker. As we know you only have to pop the top of the machine off to get easy access to the motor for a brush change. Bearing change was a doddle as well. If I wasn't on a water meter I would still have my old hotpoint

    Ive just washed my 10 tog kingsize duvet in my 5kg Whirlpool.
    It was a tight squeeze but it did it. I always use my older machines for delicates as theres no happy medium between a cotton and a delicate wash on the new machines. Either really rough or the drum doesnt move.
    I can get my Bosch (20 years old) and Whirlpool (27 years old) up to 90c with deep water and short agitations on wool washes which is great for my duvets and pillows and I do my wools on a 50c.
    New models just dont unless you have a full on cottons wash which I find ruins duvets and my duvet programme only goes up to 40c on my Bosch Serie 8 9kg.
    After washing my duvet in the Whirlpool (max 800rpm) i span it again in my Serie 8 at 1600rpm and it filled the drum nearly just as full just not as compact.
    I much prefer older machines I really like my Serie 8 but i just prefer my older machines.

    This was our first washer we had back in 1989, trim bits never fell off, and it never moved around or did anything weird.
    Was never overloaded, and happily washed for 4 years with no bother.
    Sold it through the free ads paper (some won’t remember that) and we replaced it with a 1400 microprofile, and that done us another 5 yrs with no bother.
    As an ex engineer watching some of these channels, I personally believe some you tubers like whichwasher purposely abuse machine for s**ts n giggles and it teaches nothing to the viewer.

    Well it's a nice video, but old washing machines are far better than modern machine's as far as I'm concerned because they were hot and cold fill or just hot for a 60°+ cycle, no faffing about taking in an egg cup of water about 20 times, no messing about with many short spins to eventually do a long spin and so on, my old 95 would washing my oily work clothes at 60° in 65 minutes and they would be absolutely fantastic. My current Hotpoint takes 2hrs and 30 minutes to produce the same results! Plus you could check the dial to see how advanced the cycle was and would love to see it move and click into a spin.

  • @89mjrd44
    @89mjrd44 Před 3 lety +7

    Whilst I think his video was created to cause drama and I agree that you cannot compare a 35 year old machine to a modern one, I have never been able to understand the fuss about these machines compared to others of the era. They have no features or programmes that make them stand out against other machines of the time and performance was average, arguably poorer than some other machines in a similar price bracket. I do get a bit tired of people putting them up on a pedestal above other vintage machines, they have a cult like following where people will vehemently white wash over any of their shortcomings and pretend they are ‘perfect’. No machine ever made is perfect and I find it a bit creepy the extent some enthusiasts will go to to defend vintage Hotpoints

    • @TheLaundryCentre
      @TheLaundryCentre  Před 3 lety +8

      I never said they were any better than anything else, for example I believe Zanussi machines of the time were far more solidly built. The video was made to share not only my opinions but to educate people, I have the literature on my bookshelf so I may as well share it and inform people about these machines as well, who else will? As I said, no machine is perfect or ever will be

    • @89mjrd44
      @89mjrd44 Před 3 lety +3

      @@TheLaundryCentre Totally agree that Zanussi were the best machines overall in this price bracket at the time, wasn’t saying that you had said these were better than anything else at the time, but a lot of people do and get very heated if anyone suggests otherwise. I loved seeing the literature you have and I love to have a geek out over things like this. I just don’t understand why a lot of enthusiasts can’t have a balanced discussion about the good and the bad, that to me is part of what I enjoy about the vintage machines, going back and reflecting on the ways they were good and the things I would improve

    • @TheLaundryCentre
      @TheLaundryCentre  Před 3 lety +6

      I probably am in agreement. I had an F811 and a couple of Washcraft machines and the wash action and water levels are so much better than the Hotpoint, but Id prefer to be doing a Hotpoint bearing change than a Zanussi but if I had to choose to keep one or the other in my collection then it would be the Hotpoint as I think they're more iconic and they featured in my childhood

    • @89mjrd44
      @89mjrd44 Před 3 lety +3

      @@TheLaundryCentre I think this is why as much as I thought WW was being deliberately antagonistic with his video, I found it refreshing to see someone sharing an alternative view other than the “Hotpoint were the best machines ever full stop” spiel we normally see. As you say you would prefer the Hotpoint for nostalgia and ease of repair, but you also acknowledge it’s shortcomings, that’s fair enough, I just wish more people would be more critical in their evaluations. As it happens Hotpoint machines were not particularly common in my area, but I did know of 1 or 2

  • @constiff
    @constiff Před 3 lety +6

    The machine's weight is only 66.5Kg, and has a plastic outer tub and concrete weight (instead of cast iron), which indicates why the machine does not have that good quality and reliability. However they are very easy to repair!
    I believe that any washing machine made today has even worse quality though, even thenMiele W1. Nowadays the more entry level Miele's even use a plastic outer tub as well. Miele washers nowadays are around medium quality, at the level of Beko, which is slightly better than MODERN Indesit/Hotpoint washers (!). So Miele washing machines made today probably have worse quality than the Hotpoint 95-series made back then!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also modern Miele's have terrible suspension springs, plastic outer tub (some models), and the cabinets feel more cheaply made than older Miele's too...

    • @HooverA3060
      @HooverA3060 Před 3 lety +4

      Really tbh, machines don't need a Cast iron weight to be stable. I personally think Miele's construction is just overkill. There are many machines with 2 or more concrete weights that are able to stay in one place during a particularly unbalanced spin. Plastic tubs have nothing to do with it either. If anything it's better due to the fact enamel tubs corrode overtime and leak - IE vintage Hoover's. Stainless Steel tubs ultimately are the most reliable as they are resistant to rusting, corrosion and being damaged by foreign objects.

    • @constiff
      @constiff Před 3 lety +1

      FlorenceBallardA3060 I didn't see your reply until now :p
      You are most probably right. But they must have massive concrete weights and/or 2 or more in order to be stable. But Cast iron will never crack and break like concrete so Cast iron weights will stabilize the machine with their full power forever (not including other parts which stabilize the machine such as shock absorbers, suspension springs, etc which get worn out and can't stabilize the machine with their full power as time passes).
      Stainless steel tubs are the best and there is no other thing that can compete with it ;-) Plastic, metal, enamel tubs are all worse than stainless steel tubs ;-)

    I don't think the requirements for a washing machine have changed at all over 35 years. I want it to wash clothes well and be reliable. I had a modern hotpoint and the bearings went after 2 years of very little use . It had a welded drum so the whole drum assembly had to be relaced at huge cost for the sake of a 15 pounds bearing kit. How is that progress??? Needless to say it was scrapped as the drum assembly cost nearly as much as a new machine. on reliability your hotpoint here is 35 years old and still washing like a trooper. The indesit inex will be down the tip in two or three years. Enough said. Your hotpoint has a mechanical program timer which is ten times more reliable than any circuit board .No error code E04 etc for you and a bill for hundreds of pounds to replace it. Your hotpoint has hot and cold fill which if you have solar hot water or a tank of hot water will save you money on electricity especially as you said if the economy button is pressed it just uses the water at the temperature it enters the machine and doesn't use any electricity to heat it which is the main electricity cost of any hot or warm wash. A large capacity machine would only make sense for a large family 5 or 6kg is ample for 2 or 3 people. most program cycles on these large machines wash half or less of a load so 5kg for a 10kg machine or less. The wash cycles on the new machines take hours!! I would take your hotpoint over a modern probably chinese made machine anyday

    I grew up around these machines, as did many other people, the WM series especially so they're always going to have a strong nostalgic following because of their prevalence, plus they were always pretty reliable in my eyes. More than the Dysons anyway. Plus, they're much more entertaining to watch than modern machines. Yes, silence might be preferable these days to a noisy motor, but they're much more boring in comparison. But it's obvious Hotpoint took on board this feedback. People complaining that the trims chipped off when the machine was unbalanced, the WMs didn't have trims, at least not on the sides, so that's one problem solved anyway.
