    I used to hate scales as a kid. I wasn't taught about whole body involvement. Now I'm coming back to piano after many years it's really helpful for you to demonstrate that plus all the other tips you provide.
    Thanks Josh

    I've been doing PianoMarvel since April and it's gotten me off to a great start on piano. when I started in person lessons in July it made a huge difference to have a basic foundation. Thanks for this great scales video-it was fun to see one of my favorite CZcams piano guys doing a video about my favorite piano software!

    As an aspiring piano teacher I think I would recommend two octave scales and focus on the melodic minor in that category. The reason for this is that these are what we encounter in music. I also think we need to do a lot more on chromatic scales. My descending chromatic is a weak point.

    I’ve got ninja cards up to the major scales and some minor on advanced and I’m so proud of myself as I loathe playing scales.

    this channel has the best scales tutorials - both for adults and little kids, the progress following the practice suggestions are astonishing! Then, Quality at high speed is tough - it’s harder to hear, and hands separate seems harder, the shadowing technique definitely helps; Many thanks!

    Wow you are just like my online teacher, I appreciate what you do. Now that everything is online it is difficult to find a teacher as all of them are busy but you are a very good teacher at free of cost. This helped me so much in my scales, thank you so much.
    That shadowing technique is amazing, it also works for repeated notes and repeated octaves / rapid octaves ; we must all thank Sergei Babayan.

    I like to use the slow method of increasing the metronome my 5 and then when I get it perfect I increase by 5 again, it’s slow but it works.

    Thanks for this video! I'm a new learner at the age 60 and am 45 days (and counting) into Piano Marvel starting from the absolute beginning. Anyway, I'm working on the Ninja Scale challenge having never done scales. I have four scales in so far with black belts. Learning to do two hands with proper fingering is mind-blowing. Your suggestions are extremely helpful. I love your channel.

      How much is piano marvel?

    • @Joeydoesmedicine
      @Joeydoesmedicine Před 2 lety +2

      @@Bryan_Rowen well there is free stuff but its like $14/month or so... I like that it progressively gets harder. In my opinion its no replacement for learning music theory like how scales are built, circle of fifths and what not. It's perfect for me because I learned a ton of music theory on youtube but I never spent lots of time reading music. Read read read. It's so important to slowly read more and progressively difficult music. I can physically play everything piano marvel throws at me, but being able to read it quickly is a different story.
      TLDR: great for ppl who have been learning piano for a while but are slow at reading music.

      @@Joeydoesmedicine have you ever seen the PDF files attached to the Method and Technique levels? That’s where a lot of the theory is taught. Sounds like you don’t really need that basic theory, but I thought I’d share anyway!

    Some excellent advice for torrent etude ❤️ I play scales at a decent speed but struggle with the tricky ones, like Eb minor for example. I'm currently playing Brahms Scherzo and need to work more on the more awkward scales 👍🎹

    Does that laser system allow you to measure the evenness of your scale, as in measure how close you are to the same velocity for each key? I think that would be a very cool application of it.

    I’m Loving piano marvel! Would love tips on how to break sight reading plateaus. I’m stuck at a SASR score of 1300 ish.
    I can sight read the harder stuff with more time and slower practice, but SASR gives only 20 seconds prep and the tempo on some stuff is fast. My brain can’t keep up!

    Someone answer this please, is sight-reading really when you play a song with no mistakes at sight or let’s say you make a mistake at measure 5 and decide to go back to measure 1 and play past measure 5 but now you already know what measure 5 ,1,2,34 can you still call that sight reading. Keep in mind this is your first time learning/playing song

    Hello Josh, at the beginner level you mention to use the entire body/armweight, do you apply rotation at his point, if not where does it come into play ( if any ) when practising scales for instance. Thank you

    I’d like to know how big of a difference the heaviness of the keys makes to how fast one can/should play scales. The digital piano I practice on has a down weight of ~62g, which is very high, so I wonder approx how many bpm a “pro” would be expected to play on that?

    • @joshwrightpiano
      @joshwrightpiano  Před 2 lety +1

      I’ve gone deep into the study of touch weight over the last year, and have found that downweight/upweight are not the only factors that come into play with how heavy a piano feels. A piano with bad geometry but a light touch weight can still feel heavy. It’s a very complex subject. Having said that, I prefer pianos in the 40-50 gram downweight realm. Others prefer a heavier touch
