Empire of Ivory marks a slight turn in the Temeraire series; the next few books are among my favorites, in part because they focus more on the themes I’m most interested in and in part because Temeraire dealing with consequences and having to get along with other dragons who don’t go along with him as well as his original crew is a delight. 😂

Merphy! Once you finish Changes you should consider reading Side Jobs, a series of unconnected short stories in The Dreaden Files. Aftermath in particular will be of interest to you.

Yes, the plan is to do both of the short story collections

The concept behind a Letter to the Luminous Deep has to be one of the coolest I've heard in a long time! Such a shame it is such a slow read!

Love monthly wrap-ups! 😁 I think I may have to try Borne at some point…pretty much everyone that I know has read it says that it’s great.

Borne for me next week! I usually buy a first book if they are all out, then get another if I like the 1st, but thanks to you and your discord I went and bought all three and shall dive in.

i'm glad you liked the letter from an unknown woman! looking forward to you reading more of zweig's stories, especially confusion and burning secret - those are my favorites, besides the ones you already read :)

I'm so glad you keep liking the Temeraire books so much! You have some good ones ahead of you still, and don't forget the short story collection Golden Age and Other Stories (to read after Book 9), there's a fun P&P retelling in there!

You intrigued me. I requested The Collected Novellas of Stefan Zweig from the library. I will add it to my summer reading list. Thank you!

You had an interesting reading month! I only read a few books, I finished Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell which I started in April, and I read A Psalm for the Wild-Built and the sequel which I liked a lot.

well, now you're one book further along than me in the temeraire series. but since i've been reading them with my family, i have to wait for them to be translated to spanish. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series, i'll catch up whenever the translators allow it

Since you liked Chess Story by Stefan Zweig, I think you'd also like When We Cease To Understand The World by Benjamin Labatut. I finished it recently and I thought it gave me a very similar feeling to when I was reading Chess Story. It's a finctionalized non-fiction book, and it's VERY good.

Letter from an Unknown Woman sounds messed up, I'll need to check it out. The next book is peak Dresden, buckle in when you start it! Also really cool to see you're enjoying Temeraire, I'm a bit surprised how many people crash and burn the first few books in, I enjoyed them a lot when I read through them but that doesn't seem to be a popular opinion.

Other than the many novellas, the month of May seemed to be a pretty heavy psychological themed month lol. Thorn hedge and A letter from an unknown woman.

I really want to read Maurier but the premise of Rebecca doesn't interest me. I have the little classics box set so I will try her out, but which book would you recommend I try if not Rebecca?

You mentioned thinking back about books as a hallmark of a valuable book.
I often refer back to books written by David Brin. There are a lot of quality series and stand alone books that he's written. I think the one I usually recommend as an intro to David Brin is "Kiln People". But the one I think about the most is Existence. The Postman is his most famous but Kevin Costner made a terrible movie about it and it was nothing like the book.

So weird, I didn't know he had a promotional video for Existence. 11 second trailer for existence

Merphy I read rebecca in may and since you love daphne du maurier and I remember you saying in a video that, while rebecca is the most known, there is a book you think it's even better, what is the title of that book? I want to read another book by her

Roadside Picnic was left on the roadside 🥲.
Zweig is really something, such tension, such a beautiful writing. I can recommend novellas Angst, Amok, The Compulsion, The Governess etc...
