  • Here is Walt Disney's original idea for EPCOT. The film was made for the Florida Legislators so that the state would give the company the self-governing rights and permissions it needed to build its giant theme park, resort, city utopian thing. ***TRIVIA: He dyed his hair for this.

Walt never let the limitations of imagination other men stop him ever. Walt was a true visionary and he could see clearly where none could.
Seems visionaries such as Edison, Einstein, Disney, and Jobs all had so much more they wanted to do. They were never finished with their work. But reality had a way of cutting short their legacy. Thank you Walt for being here for as along as you were. You made everyone think about the future in wonderful exciting ways. Not just to dwell on the present.

I designed a radial city before I heard of the idea, with a road system numbered based on their degree, like "145th". Several circular monorails would make one within walking distance at all times, and the dense interior's transportation would be primarily walking and bicycles/segway type vehicles. Now, to make this happen for real would require more entrepreneurs like Disney. It's just a shame he stopped at just an amusement park. I'd love to actually LIVE in this type of city plan.

yeah we do actually know that this would've worked but it also would've had some serious problems.. especially the whole corporate property thing. Disney did a little here and there because of reedy creek and it's mainly ended up being empty bad houses and them fronting a lot of the repair bills.

If you take the Disney company as a whole - a full studio dedicated to the art of filmaking, a world class resort managing the parks and hotels spread across the property, they have thousands of "cast members" working on these projects. It makes perfect sense to have a town for everyone to live, from management to the imagineers. A more artistic version of Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Because the father of Tony Stark was based directly from Walt Disney in Iron Man 2, mixing EPCOT plans with the New York World Fair. Even Richard Sherman was called to compose Iron Man 2's main theme "Make way for the Future Today" that is a tribute to themes like "Theres a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow". Jon Favreau, the director of the movie, is a big fan of Walt Disney. In fact his next movie is about Disneyland and its called Magic Kingdom.

Even though I love the parks and have been going every single year since I was 4 I feel like it's just not as good as it used to be. Before the Parks were about people. Making people happy, making memories, entertaining people, etc. Whenever I would go to the parks, even when I was a child, I wouldn't see a park, I wouldn't see the money the parks made or the money that the parks used.

Through every monumental thing that Walt Disney accomplished (syncing sound w/anim., color in feature anim., color in tv and the creation of disneyland itself), he faced harsh criticism from all around. People, including his brother, thought he was crazy; that none of his ideas could be made into reality. Regardless, he knew what was right and got to work; his whole life. This utopian idea of EPCOT died with Disney(among other ideas). Goes to show the difference one person can make.

Walt was going to build Disnet World in Livingston Parish in Louisiana, but word leaked out he was buying land south of Denham Springs and many of the political types ran in and bought the land form under him to get him to pay a higher price for the land (that was in 1963/4).
So he moved the project to Florida and the rest is history.
He wanted Disney world in the middle of the country in the south, so he could have 12 months of visitors.

The Epcot film was considered the last time Walt was on film before his death until quite recently Disney archives found another video of him talking about his movie "Follow Me, Boys!" on the same date this was filmed (Oct. 27, 1966) There's an article about it in D23.

Not to be overly cynical, but I now have to wonder whether the whole "EPCOT vision" thing might not have just been a device to extract needed concessions from the State of Florida -- mostly, I gather, in the form allowing Disney Corp to run Disney World with relative autonomy, which they did eventually get.

The best thing Disney can do to "fix" EPCOT is to use more timeless (or ageless) themes. At least, Universe of Energy, Test Track and The Seas w/ Nemo and Friends would get a lot more mileage if they had put in things around the theme, rather than specific brands (particularly Test Track and Universe of Energy). Everything will be dated in due time, would just be money well spent to not tie things too tightly..

We already have all the technology we need to do such a "perfect" community, all we lack is the will. Then if they pushed the technology part further just for the sake of making it more impressive, it would probably give it a smell of a dystopian society, where technology is so overwhelming that nothing is organic anymore.

I think EPCOT would've spread faster than the Venus project since Fresco's a self-appointed pessimist. A.I. will be able to synthesize anything, not just resources on Earth but in space where there is virtually a limitless supply (atoms, molecules). Yes, it would take advanced tech (A.I., Space Elevator) but we all know Walt was heavily embracing technology as he got older - a pure by-product of his optimism. All Fresco does is gripe and complain at our "foolishness". Can't help it, I guess.
