- Weather Report was founded in 1970 by musicians who had met whilst playing with Miles Davis. This Montreux Festival show from 1976 follows on from the release of their album "Black Market" but features the line-up that would release their most famous and successful album "Heavy Weather" in 1977. Previously only available as a bootleg of a TV broadcast, this new DVD release is fully authorized and has been restored to its full length.

Now he’s up there reunited with Miles, Joe, Jaco and all the others that left before him, probably having a kickass jam as we’re speaking. RIP Wayne Shorter 🙏🏻
^🙄🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤡🤷♂️
The bad news…God has a girlfriend and she likes to sing.
Down there. Christians go to be with the Lord. Get saved. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life.
Jazz fusion magicians ❤
Heard them in Denmark 4th of July 1976.
The greatest concert in my life, so far.
Magicians? Yes! Exactly.
That Zawinul Rhodes sound! Shimmering, elegant, awesome!!
The drums and percussion of Acuna and Badrena here are extraordinary. What a group of musicians this was! Brilliant Shorter, Pastorius and Zawinul 👏
absolutly 👍👋👏
For sure! I think he's among the Most Intuitively best drummers in the whole World! It's How He Hears the music in addition to his skills! Truly among the World's Best drummers and musicians and I understand he is multi-instrumentalist. I met him once at a live gig he played percussion with Clare Fischer, and Alex was Very Humble! Very sweet, genuine spirit. Wish I could connect again to just say, "Hi Alex! Remember me? No? Well, I remember You 😄What a WONDERFUL tune.
Magnifique! RIP Wayne Shorter, Saxophone Colossus!
Acuna is on fire, so is Badrena - best Weather Report line up
Without a doubt.
Fifty years after WR are still unparalleled! Greatest electric jazz band ever! I was 14 when i first heard "Birdland" and decided bass playing was my goal!
Yes, and that pair of Acoustic 370 were the top of bass amps, making entire jump the stage!😊
I just can't get over how hard this band worked for their audience and to get that uniquely Weather Report sound! Wayne looks like he's almost dying up there he's putting so much wind through that sax! Most sax players never touch the gear he's in shaping those notes with his embouchure. And Jaco, just unreal....did he shave the frets off that Fender bass he's playing? Just amazingly talented group of musicians at the top of their game who took Jazz into completely uncharted waters and succeeded in helping create a new form of music; Fusion. There will never be another band like them EVER but I'm so glad I got the chance to discover their music over 30 years ago.
I'm a little late to the party here bit Jaco help popularize the fretless bass. He is said to have created his own jazz basses.
I totally agree. The most incredible, iconic and talented fusion band of all time and hands down the masters of progressive jazz funk fusion all mixed into one. Truly the masters of their genre and craft.
Totally agree, there will never be anything else like Weather Report. Joe and Wayne were willing to dive straight into the unknown, and not look back! For the curious, Jaco took his 1962 Fender Jazz Bass and ripped the frets out with pliers, filled the holes with wood glue, and then sealed the fingerboard with boat epoxy. I think he was aware that there was such a thing as a fretless electric, and somehow heard what he would do with it, but he said he couldn't afford to buy it! So the rest is history.
thanks for the post, here's the lineup that i found:
Josef ‘Joe’ Erich Zawinul - keyboards;
Wayne Shorter - saxophone;
Jaco Pastorius - electric bass;
Alejandro ‘Alex’ Acuña - drums;
Manolo Badrena - percussion and vocals.
Powerful ensemble. Thank GOD for ears to hear one of the greatest performances of all time....
This particular concert was notable for the fact that these live performances off the album, put most of the studio material in the shade.
And I worshipped those performances!
Oh my God! This is music! Passion, creativity, technique, generosity! Everything at the top
Wayne Shorter an American treasure... Weather Report pure virtuosos.....
Jazz Bass A world treasure

They are good 👌
COULDN'T AGREE MORE ..........
They always seemed to have a percussionist until 77. Then it was just Alex Acuna on drums by himself! One thing I always loved about Weather Report and Frank Zappa's bands was they were very percussion/rhythm/drum conscious!
Right. It's that tie in back to Africa that makes fusion so deep.
Thank you for sharing this... Rest in peace, Wayne.
Alex Acuna is a monster. Of course, the whole band are. RIP Mr. Zawinul.
Paco ceri el negro de costa de Marfil era mejor busca ...... Joe zawinul and sindicate en el mar Índico JVC.... papaaaaaaa
And sadly, RIP Mr. Shorter
Unreal ...... 3 geniuses in one band, Jaco, Wayne and Joe at the height of their powers but the thing about this group especially during the time Jaco was a member the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts. I saw this group about a year and a half later when it was even a much more powerful and seamless unit with only four pieces including Peter Erskine on drums in my home town of Passaic at a small venue that since burned down - The Capitol Theater. From the 3rd row center I witnessed one of the most soul satisfying and memorable musical events of my entire life. The cohesion and brilliance of those four musicians was like nothing I'd ever heard before or since. A band like this only happens once in a lifetime and I'm grateful to have been there when they were on fire.
You really think the 1 drummer lineup of Peter Erskine was better than Acuna and Badrena?
That band with erskine is probably the best jazz fusion band in history, nothing is close, not even return to forever or mahavishnu.
@@MrCappon1111 I feel the same way and that was a very special band at a unique point in time in music. Weather Report was already a great band before Jaco joined but once he became a member, then the group took off and their popularity soared and the band reached unprecedented musical and commercial heights.
Acuna and manny are great too
@@madbebopper without a shadow of a doubt the Jaco years were Weather Report’s prime
Acuna and Badrena... #WOW!
Jaco at the height of his talent.the bass playing on this tune is absolute perfection.
We bass players have been chasing his tone for 40+ years now. Not to mention his phrasing and style. Truly one of a kind!
@@jellyfish3333 and don’t forget his impeccable groove
@@ethanlocke3604 the funkiest groove jazz will have ever known !!
Personnel: Wayne Shorter - Sax
Joe Zawinful - Keys
Jaco Pastorius - Bass
Alex Acuna - Drums
Manolo Badrena - Percussion
Vcool percussion !
Thank you
Very much thank you..
Indeed he was zawinful of ideas.
@Andres Porras You'll get lost in some brilliant music by listening to Jaco's solo work and to Weather Report.
Wayne Shorter with all his experience with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis, Joe Zawinul with his years with Cannonball Adderley made Weather Report a true success with all the different drummers and bass players.
Jaco Pastorius is an Incredible Bass player...the band has an incredible connection
@@magiedaniels4708 Weather report had some of the best cats around for their time so I'd say that adds to them being an absolute monster in the community
I can never watch Badrena without thinking I could do a night on the town with that guy! Top band. I never get bored of as there is so much going on.
The great thing about music is that it is understood in any language......and man how we all understand Weather Report!!!!!
Wayne's solo on tenor a classic example of briefly going back to his earlier post bop roots, compared to his original expression on the studio recording. So fortunate to have seen them often!
Des types "incroyables", un groupe " fantastique " , quelle pied d' avoir pu assister aux concerts ,
Bought this album in Flint Michigan back in 92 starting back then listening to alot of jazz fusion from the 70's. BLACK MARKET is a CLASSIC.
Saw them 2 years later in Melbourne AUS.......life-changing!
Bravo!!!!
A band that featured so much talent it hurt! Each one of them long since recognised as champions of their instrument and art! Not possible to get tired of Weather Report because they were so far ahead of the curve their music can never age.
Manolo wow he was always busy steady moving & on point never missing a beat being on key man what a job he had very underrated amongst others in THE band I give much RESPECTO he got DOWN bad DUDE !!!
One of the best ensembles to have existed in my view, and I'm a guitar player.
this is real music man, IM DANCING. great combination of jazz and funk. looooove it
The grooves and melodies are what WR were all about. Superb stuff!👏👏👏👏👏
I love how Wayne has his cork reinforced with probably teflon tape, maybe because a leak, or mouthpiece too loose... Even the top players need emergency solutions on the road sometimes
Spectacular performance W.R ! Thanks for share, MONTREUX.
There will NEVER ever be another Weather Report, the discipline the creativity
Sad day... RIP, Wayne.
Amazing tune. The Legend of Weather Report. You are the epitome of Elegant People, Mr. Shorter.
Oh man, Alex Acuna is truly one of the most skilled, intuitive, gifted drummers/rhymists in this world, of our time! Thank you, Alex!
I love this Weather Report lineup.
the timing of his bass line just makes this song so sweet
Alphonso Johnson played on the studio recorded version.
@@skineyemin4276 yeah but Jaco somehow managed to mix in his own style and groove into it without steering away from what Alphonso Johnson had laid into the original track
@@RiveBassCovers Yes, he did, and still, WP moved on. I also assumed that Jaco played on the original recording of "Elegant People"...., which was Alphonso's style. Also, the drums and percussion were the stars of that tune on that night.
Rest up Wayne
RIP Wayne
What a killer set! Joe Zawinul doesn't get enough dap for his genius. He, along with Miles, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and a few others was truly one of the creators of the Fusion Jazz genre. And like all of the greats, Zawinul knew when to back off and let the silence be heard.
A true wizard of synths and harmony
Rip Wayne Shorter
Some awesome live Jaco. the GOAT. No showing off on this one, just playing amazing bass.
Hard to comment about the best ever in fusion of musicians together at once jazz. WR!
Weather Report is on my top 5 all time favorite bands. A lot of people aren't hip to them which is a shame. This lineup in particular was as badass as they come.
The book titled Elegant People is a must read for those who want to know the back storu on Weather Report..a must read !!!
Famously known as the “drums mix”. But the only player on the whole stage playing time is Jaco, laying down the 2 & 4 with perfect intonation. Just wow, Jaco! 46 years later, we’re listening to your master class in music. I can’t even express how happy that news would make him. He’d fly half a year on that.
Rip Wayne! 😥🙏
this is really nicely cut. Also Manolo Badrena is a monster
Also respect to the workmen of the group Acuna, and Bageira with theire polyrytmics
Otra organiacción del Sr.Zawinul que ha hecho que limpie y libere tu alma con su música. Gracias.
I love the chords and sounds Joe uses here and many other WP songs of this period...creates a mood I want to inhabit all day.
Me too. Before going to sleep, I always liked to put up their Mr. Gone album which still seems to me somehow unerathly magical!
album that every jazz lover must have in his discotheque: at home.
1975-1976 was very excided period for WR. with a lot of change in different musicians , Narada, alphonso johnson, chester thomsen ect.. very inspiring period for all mucisians
Braavvooo willy de ville jadore ton musique
The espectacular Alex Acuña on drums!
What a lineup it’s 2023 lam still going wow eash musos is just 🌎 CLASS timeless
When you get a bunch of Virtuosos together, This is the Thunder they make. Little do they know that God is dancing and moving to this music. Comon already! It's some the most amazing creativity I've ever heard! Much of it improvised around its theme/progression! Whoooooo
Joe Zawinul (teclados), Wayne Shorter (saxofone), Jaco Pastorius (baixo), Alex Acuna (bateria) e Manolo Badrena (percussão).
Dream Team
Greatest line up for WR
Wayne made that sax speak a whole different language, damn.
Great..... 😎 👍 🌈
You take me a trip to the past when I was younger...
Inside l feel the same when l see this.!!!!! 👍 😊
Thenks!!! 🌈😎👌
ウエザーリポートは、私の一番のお気に入りです。
この緊張感とミステリアスな雰囲気が素晴らしい!!!!
Dichosos los invitados a la cena del Señor. La mejor formacion que tuvo el W. R. Saludos desde Mexico
RIP Wayne Shorter
This makes shopping for groceries fun and exciting!
So hip and sweet...it really does sum up what elegant people..look like..are
With the exception of the first Weather Report with Eric Gravatt, etc this is the most free and searching version of the group IMO.
I was at this concert :-)! Absolutely amazing!!!! Art Blakey played on the same night, Billy Cobham George Duke Band (with Scofield) two days earlier. Those were the days!!!!
Jadavi Records and Cobham and Duke had Alfonso Johnson with them-he had just left Weather Report!
Jaco was the “new guy” on this gig!
Guitfiddlejase True. And it was the first appearence of Scofield on the scene. He totally blew me away and made me quit the Guitar and start the Saxophone :-).
The only instance in all of recorded music that “more cowbell” is absolutely justified. Badrena and Acuna killing it.
Grandes Jaco, shorter,Joe, acuña y bradena
When musicians left blood on the stage.
well said..

So cool....
Wow! Acuna and Badrena!
D'excellents souvenirs pour moi du spectacle à Montréal !
Possibly the best band I have EVER seen in my life! The only other contender for that accolade is / was the early 80s line up of King Crimson!
What lineup did you see?
2 great bands
A monumental tune
bella questa formazione alla batteria c'è L'Acuna che tutti avremmo voluto essere
I can't believe how good they played at this concert. It's kind of scary as a musician, remembering very complex arrangements, knowing all the parts and never making a mistake. These guys do it absolutely flawlessly.
@aussie_philosopher8079 ^That’s not how a musician talks- it’s not scary, it’s just being a musician.🤦♂️🤦♂️🤡🤷♂️💩

Jaco Best bass player ever. Incredable.
This fucking grooves way more than the studio version
Way more energetic and immersive

That transition hits me like a fucking train every goddamn time holy shit
And Zawinul with that spacey patch synchronizing with Shorter
AHHHHHHHHH
Truth...
I really never could stand jazz-fusion. But Weather Report is another beast.
c'était un des mes favoris , simplement , GENIAL
One of the best I have ever heard
Zawinul and shorter are great musicians and I see Manolo Bradena is with Herlin Riley. I saw Zawinul at the London House in Chicago in 64 when he was with Cannonball. This is great stuff. Thanks so much!!
Jaco - bass
Alex Acuna - drums
Airo - percussionist
Wayne Shorter - Saxs
Joe Zawinul - Keyboards
Not Airto. Manolo Badrena.
*****GREAT*****
This performance encapsulates everything that is great about this amazing band. Thanks for sharing.
