John Barry really hit the ball out of the park with this soundtrack. So emotive and melancholy. Really beautiful work. When joined with the real life tragedy it makes it all the more poignant.
I love the way the music hits it as Dirk Pitt is walking through the Grand Staircase and him raising the White Star Line flag. The New York sequence is also one of my favorites.
Of all Mr Barry’s incredible film music, this is my favourite and the one I play the most. Evocative doesn’t come close.

"Raise the Titanic" came out in 1980, not 1985. The actual wreck of the real Titanic was discovered in 1985.

Even though survivors reported seeing it break in half, the testimony of Titanic's surviving officers and some other prominent passengers that she had sunk in one piece were affirmed by both the British and U.S. inquiries into the sinking. That's why the story was written as if it was in one piece.

Despite the utter implausibility here, it's hard not to feel awed and uplifted in some way when seeing Titanic being resurfaced and finally brought to the place she was sailing to on her maiden voyage all those years ago. :)

Thank George Bush jr. For the twin towers, preplanned cause a war to use the US military to sneak over to Syria(right next door to Iraq) to secure more Bush family oil wells, already proven, save your breath.
And the Titanic had 2 investors from Spain that had a huge vault on the ship with the agreed purchase price of the state's then. We would be flying a different flag today. It was 2 groups that devised the sinking, and previous to leaving the dock they disabled the section plates that automatically close each section if leaking. That little slice would have caused her to slow down a bit and lean a little, but Never sink. They had to make sure it was definite. Several workers knew they were sacrificing their lives but were promised that their families would be well provided for.
Again, already proven and documented numerous times.

I cry every time I watch this scene….it is beautiful and emotionally moving for me.
Don't we wish the wreck was this well preserved! I think this film created a very faithful reproduction of the ship giving what we knew at the time. Since discovery of the wreck we've come to realize how badly damaged in the sinking and subsequent trip to the ocean floor the ship actually was.
I doubt the glass dome would have survived the journey to the floor and back again though plus it was the forward funnel that toppled into the ocean
The way the ship sand and subsequent damage travelling to the ocean floor and finally coming to rest there is certainly understandable. Even before discovery of the wreck common sense dictates the ship would be in deplorable condition, but it was fun to dream at the time this move was produced.

I loved this movie when it came out. The idea of raising the Titanic, although you knew it would never happen, was cool to think about. Nobody knew where it was, or what shape it was in. So the idea of raising it one day was an intriguing idea. Given the fact that they had raised other vessels. However that dream was ruined, a few years later, when they discovered the Titanic and found out it was in 2 pieces. The movie is still good, but that intrigue is gone now, knowing the real condition of the ship.
Some of the survivors in the lifeboats said that they saw it split in two before it sank but nobody believed them. Then Robert Ballard found the wreck and proved their story to be true.
To quote Ghostbusters 2, where an old ghostship of the Titanic arrives: *"Well, it's better late than never."*

why scrap it after the sinking it became a famous shipwreck so they really can’t scrap it even if it was raised to the surface after 100 years on the sea floor it’s a huge part of history .-.
The fact she managed to stay afloat for a solid 2 hours after the impact with the iceberg is already a testament to just how incredibly well she was built
Imagine if it *hadn't* sunk. Steamship travel was already on its way out, so the Titanic would likely have had a short service life, and would have then been scrapped and forgotten.

Yeah, that part was pretty unbelievable. The wooden decks were in surprisingly good shape after having sat at the bottom of the ocean for 70 years.

Randy Woodworth Yeah, it's pretty much a pipe dream of this eccentric Australian billionaire who seems to be having problems raising enough capital and then there's the hard reality he has to face about the necessary changes to the ship to satisfy present day maritime safety regulations that will significantly change the liner enough so that it really won't be an exact replica. Not by a long shot. But yeah, I highly doubt a keel will ever be laid for that ship.

Well, they should have known the ship was broken at least in half considering EVERY survivor said they SAW it break in two before it sank. Either way, it is in ridiculously good condition even if it did sink whole. They should have messed it up more.
John Dooley It doesn't even matter. The entire plot is flawed. The titanic didn't sink because of some kind of storm, it got hit by an iceberg, which put a hole in the ship and let all the water in. They couldn't just lift it backup to sea level without water just pouring into it and re-sinking the ship.
This was filmed in Malta, just 5 minutes walk from where I live. Till some years ago one could still see the model of this ship left outside to deteriorate by the elements. I don't know where it ended up, hopefully restored somewhere.

When I saw this movie as a kid (despite my knowledge of the actual event) I was so elated and excited to see them raise it
Honestly a beautiful moment in film shame everyone is a titanic expert in the comment section and cannot suspend that disbelief for a second to appreciate something.
Funny, even though this is definitely not how the real Titanic's condition is (actually laughably intact - though to be fair, this was made before the wreck was discovered), it still is uplifting and cathartic seeing this great ship raised back up and getting a chance to finish its maiden and only voyage.

They could actually raise it by putting a base under the front portion of the ship , but it wouldn’t be possible with the back part because it’s so broken.

I saw the movie "Raise the Titanic" in the theater when it came out in 1980. It was not a bad movie and no one knew what really happened so it worked.

This scene along side it’s soundtrack are both emotional and incredible.
This was before we learned Titanic split in two. Still fascinating to imagine. The idea has been proposed to raise the in tact half but I don't believe the ship would even survive the rise to the surface before completely falling apart, let alone anything else. Its just been under water for too long. Its best to just leave it alone and treat it like a historical grave site.

I do too! But, I also don't.. Considering the fact it's basically a grave. And, it would be very disrespectful. Even though it would be so fascinating! It would also crumble as soon as it hit above the water. Or as it was being raised because of the movement and it being over 100 years old. But another reason it would crumble is because of how deep it is in the ocean and the pressure holding it together. I'm thirteen, and when I was seven I watched the movie and have been fascinated with it ever since. I remember my grandmother saying I cried, not just from animals dying, but from children and the unfair treatment to lower class people. But, this movie is a little incorrect. He would have fallen through the rotted wood. And, it would have smelt horrible, also, maybe a trace of human remains here or there. But, I love the fact this movie makes almost every Titanic fans dream come true. Even if it is fake.

At first I thought the 1985 date seemed a little late, but after reading the trivia on IMDB, I found out the movie was filmed in 1978 and based on a 1975 book. That seemed perfect! The whole "raise the Titanic" idea is just so 70s!

Loved this film as a kid. I was and am obsessed with Titanic/Olympic, just fulfilled that dream of Titanic being back afloat..
If we tried that, the Titanic wreck would fall apart before we even lifted it, due to mass deterioration. Nature is just destructive to the point that there will be a time where everything beautiful in the universe will be eaten away.

Made before it was found! They didn't know it was destroyed they thought it was fine!
I love how in ths wreck model, the hull, super structure, both masts, three of the four funnels, and rigging are entirely intact, and the decks are safe to walk on, which is unrealistic for any ship wreck.
That was one part which was hard to believe in this movie. They even landed a helicopter on the deck! That wood was in surprisingly good shape for having been underwater for over 70 years!
Even if the Titanic hadn't split apart, when it hit the ocean floor it would have done so with the force of a freight train at full speed slamming into a mountain. There would have been likely a lot more damage than what was caused by the iceberg.
But, all in all, this was a decent, enjoyable movie. Too bad it flopped when it was released.
@@dx1450 Cinematic license. Stuff like that used to bug me, but whatever. We need to enjoy it for what it is, and what it represents. Not to mention that probably 99.9% of what we now know about deepwater shipwrecks was learned in the years since this was created. We know far more about the moon and outer space than we do about the oceans...

Love this film! I find the idea of exploring an old liner really fascinating. I could imagine exploring the wreck of the SS America and just be amazed by how magnificent the ship once was. Titanic was how I found the America by the way.

Raise the Titanic is one of my favorite movies in the whole wide world I have it on VHS. In fact I had a friend of mine bring it to a meet and greet where David Selby was and I had David Selby sign the cover of the VHS. Nothing beats the moment when that ship breaks the water and starts to emerge after what 80 something years....

People are always banging on about how inaccurate this film is, but it's just a movie, I like to think of it as a "what if?" Fantasy film.
I loved this movie as a kid and I still love it now the scene where titanic breaks the surface is still as spectacular as ever.

The interior scenes were filmed on the SS Santa Barbra, which had been out of service and rotting for over a decade. It apparently needed very little conversion for the filming because of the level of neglect
If you watch the movie Sahara you will see in the background in the beginning credits that there's a newspaper clipping saying they raise the Titanic.. Clive cussler wrote both of these books

And I must say this was an excellent-done scene for 1980, especially after the ship is raised and the camera scrolls across the ship's deck. This is pretty much the only good scene in the film, lol
This is a Titanic's fanatic dream come to life.... The score with this raising is so beautiful though. You have to commend the movie on model detail also! Dont forget this was filmed BEFORE scrientists and researchers discovered the wreck in two pieces (well.....slightly more than two)
It's called make believe people it's impossible for them to raise the Titanic the size and weight of the ship was beyond.

Yup. The ship sunk in 1912. This movie was made in 1980. French submariners found the wreckage in 1984. FOUR. So, yeah.
