  • Which one do you think is better? It is a close call for me, but I do have an opinion!

    I have an old Paradigm Ultracube 10 sub and it's a beast-650 watts RMS, 1950 watts peak and it plays down to 22hz which is just about as low as humans can hear and most amazingly, it's small. I also have the Klipsch Promedia sub which is even smaller and sounds good but can't touch the Paradigm

    That Klipsch sure looks like what Energy was putting out in their day.

      Energy was acquired by Klipsch in 2006.

      Actually, this Klipsch subwoofer is from “back in the day” as well. And I do believe they bought Energy at a similar time. So basically, the Energy sub you’re thinking of may very well be this exact unit.

    Well on low volumes even pretty bad woofers sounds good...but when you turn them up what's happening? Which one sounds better, distort first?

      The Klipsch and the Paradigm can both go loud enough for even a very large room. They both have a limit to them though. The amp on the Paradigm will clip at some point, and while the Klipsch does not, it has blown a fuse at high volume before, which is not good. On the inside of the Paradigm, they have all Paradigm branded parts. In the Klipsch, the amp seems to be sourced from China. The labeling on the Klipsch is wrong though, because the French part translates to “electronic shock.” Paradigm got the French part right. It translates to “electric shock.”

    I have a newer paradigm defiance v10 and it sound great I wonder how different it is from these older subs

      I like the style of older Canadian-made Paradigm products. They use most of the price for the electronics, so the only premium you pay for high end subwoofers from other companies is how they look. The defiance v10 is kinda like the modern equivalent of this PDR-10, maybe a little pricier. I bet with the advances in technology, it would have great potential. I think it could possibly beat this one though. There is also the Klipsch ksw-12 in this video. It is hard to beat that Klipsch with my budget, but sometime in the future I maybe could demo newer budget products (such as Sony, Polk, ELAC, Yamaha, current Klipsch model.) I bet none will sound better than the Klipsch 12”, but you never know, and I could be blown away again!

    These are both more or less designed for home theater so I wouldn't expect them to be very musical compared to a subwoofer actually designed for music playback. Subwoofers are always fun to mess with. Try pointing them at each other and set one 0° phase and the other to 180° phase.

      I agree, it is interesting. I love taking them apart, hooking the bare cones up to my receiver and watching them bump! I also like swapping out components into other subwoofer boxes to see what happens.

      The Paradigm does sound surprisingly musical for a home theater subwoofer, at least to me. It might have to do with it being a 10 inch cone. They both get loud enough to rattle the windows and clip some of my mics. When turned loud, the amp in the Paradigm will slightly clip, and when the Klipsch is turned too loud, it will cause port noise. I have had the Klipsch blow the fuse in the back though. Broke the fuse holder removing the blown fuse. Luckily, found the right part and replaced both the fuse holder and the fuse. (Love taking stuff apart, so that was easy enough.)

      @@djijspeakerguy4628 I have just bought Klidpsch fives from US. Should I pair them up with Paradigm or Klipsch sub?

    • @djijspeakerguy4628
      @djijspeakerguy4628  Před rokem

      @@rishahid I don’t really know about the current products from either brand. Currently, I hear better things about brands like SVS or HSU for subwoofers, but I have not heard those in real life. However since you already have a Klipsch set of powered speakers you might want to match brands if you want it to look good. The fives are a fairly high end offering, so try not to get the lowest end Klipsch subwoofer, or you will probably be disappointed: cheap subs can be very difficult to get the sound to properly mix with the speakers, and if they do, they might not get super loud. This Klipsch struggles to match with my speakers due to a peak at 50 hz. My Paradigm definitely does that better, but it doesn’t go as loud.
