    Patient safety verses production (processing) is a huge issue where I’m at. I just started and I’m new to this field, but even after only 60 days on the job they are expecting me to process/inspect trays faster. Even when I’m in decon, they are expecting me to speed up, I mean I know efficiency and speed is an expectation but I’m still learning and trying to understand all 100 millions things I have to keep in mind. It is overwhelming.

If all mechanical equipment is functional on a shift then we are blessed which is a very rare occasion. Walk in to a shitstorm every night, but we do what is possible. Though what we pull through on a shift after all the bitching and cussing out people, they walk in like we had an easy night wrapping osteotomes haha. • @bostongeorge1000
      @bostongeorge1000  Před 4 lety

      The count sheet goes on the outside handle of the tray. That way we can attach a sticker for what load number it is on it. The ink on the paper isnt verified for steam sterilzation so it does not go in the tray. Some places use a sterile bag to put the sheet in. Then it goes inside the tray

      Scott Clark you are correct. you should be able to slid your hand in between the wrapped trays. i honestly wasnt paying attention to that in this video so im not sure if they looked close to you or not. but i always practice that. im not sure if its an standard but it is a very good practice to keep them about an inch apart. but smaller tray that lean on each other are ok.

      Decontamination has to be anywhere from 60 to 65 degrees fahrenheit. Prep and pack/autoclave area has to be between 68 and 73 degrees. Depending on the sizes of the autoclaves and the area they are located it can get pretty warm when they are left open. Sterile storage shouldn't exceed 75 degrees either. The department is relatively cold, the only heat your really feeling is the heat from constantly being in motion depending on the volume the facility does. Hope this answer helps ! I'm not going to knock you for your continued efforts in contributing to the success of perioperative services on a daily basis. What you guys do is imperative to patient safety and contributes to the overall generated revenue for the hospital.
    That being said.. the common misconception is that other shifts tend to compare their workloads to other shifts. This isn't the best way to measure workflow as other variables come into play that differ between shifts and the OR schedule. Unfortunately, as someone stated previously, the first shift usually gets the brunt of OR requests and attitudes while second shift typically starts the clean up process for the day as most cases will be finishing up by then and work piles up. Third shift is an extension of that and finishes the clean up portion while also starting the QA tests for the next day. Each shift is imperative to one another in contributing to a successful workflow. Try to understand that, yes maybe sometimes some people aren't as motivated as the next person but, in my experiences, most people want to do the right thing and get as much done so they don't leave work behind for the next shift.
    I express to my staff constantly that leaving work for the next shift is going to happen from time to time but just make sure you are doing the best you can with being as observant and methodical as possible. Personal and patient safety comes first and cutting corners will catch up to you at some point.
    The point of this rambling is just to express to you that don't try to take your workload so personal unless, for sure, other staff members are just leaving shit on purpose. I'm sure you have some quiet nights but I'm sure there are crazy nights as well. It is the ebb and flow of the nature of your profession as it entirely depends upon other variables that are out of SPDs control (ie. Start and end times of cases, staffing, communication, volume of content, attitudes, add ons, etc...)
    Keep it up man and keep giving your best effort. The prize is knowing that you did everything you were supposed to do with the best intention and knowledge you have on how to do it and that you feel confident giving your product out to be used on someone's mother, sister, father, son, etc... It's an empowering job that seldomly feels as such. But just know you are contributing to something that means more than you probably give yourself credit for. If you are reducing surgical site infections because you didn't skip steps along the decontamination phase then kudos to you, you just may have saved someone's life.
    Trust me, first shift isn't glorious either... Second shift has its difficulties too. Since they rely on you and you do a great job on third shift then that's your job security, although you really should have two people on third in case anything bad happened...
    Anyway, I've said enough. Keep your head high man. Keep up the good work.

I've had travelers who did the bare minimum for twice my wage, employees who's only loads were filled with content my shift assembled and its back on my shift to put it away. It's not always like that but it's crazy how often it can happen. And talking about them rushing or creating these stressful environments where they assume the work should be done in half the time when we have so much to do and we have to be so thorough with everything so there are no mistakes. We aren't a 24/7 but they work us like we are. I appreciate the video man it relays a lot of the same emotions I've been feeling and I'm sure other hard workers feel in our field.

    I am a sterile processing technician myself and it just sounds like you're complaining more than working.... Day and evening shifts have to run around doing more than what they are supposed to be doing than the overnight shifts will ever do.. there's no scheduled surgeries at night... maybe a trauma or an occasional birth but that's all. Like idk if you're expecting to come to work with the bare minimum to do but you know that's not how it goes. We gotta work.. that's what we get paid for.

    • @sarahmuehlbauer9001
      @sarahmuehlbauer9001 Před 5 lety

      Jasmine Johnson right. Day shifts take calls from surgeries, and do decontamination and sterrad and put away. Not just sets in assembly.

  • @jacquelinebontzolakes1197

    OK SO YOU COMPLAINING? WTH... If you already know how they "roll" then just start from where they leave off and keep it moving... GEEZ!!! They foul, but at least there is work that is already done... it don't mean you bash other people for all that work they have done. It took you 23 minutes to tell us about your day and you could have just done the work... at least you have a job!

      Why should he have to work harder so things can get finished?? Like he said he is the only one work at night. Four people on days and second shift should be able to get things done. Im pretty sure he is thankful to have a job but thats not the point everyone else should be working

      Girl please. The work they have done. I was actually given orders to document. Even if i took an hour to document i did 90 percent more work alone than 3 to 4 people on day shift. I do know how they roll that was the reason to document
