I grew up in this place, moved out until the very last day before they boarded it up for demolition. It was never a dangerous place for us. Felt very comfortable living there, and we knew every single alley ways inside the walled city. The book “City of the darkness” portrays and documents the place very well and accurately.

Flying into Kowloon, in the eighties, you would go right over "through" this! It was so cool! It felt, looking out the plane window, like you were going to crash into it! There were millions of colorful lights from the buildings in and around it! Incredible! I had no idea what it was until now!

Kowloon was one of my favorite maps on Call of Duty Black Ops. Now I know it's history. The plane flying over the map makes sense now!

Wow. My mind was blown. They say the world is small, yet I would have never known this place existed weren't it not for the internet. What an amazing world we live in.
This is endless inspiration for a cyberpunk movie.
This looks like one of those shanty towns in apocalypse movies that just kept growing bigger and bigger. Also, the place didn't burn down over the years because it looks to be made mostly, if not purely, out of concrete. Concrete does not burn. An uncontrolled blaze might have spread to the interior of a couple of buildings that had wood inside them at the most, but there was no way this whole place could burn to the ground because it wasn't made of flammable material.
It's probably a blessing that it was eventually demolished. Imagine a fire starting in there. Or even worse, the COVID pandemic 😟

Also, technically it wasn't British's fault. The only thing British did was to banned QIng dynasty's troops from entering the city back in late 20 century, which basically banned all government in there. The Kowloon walled city became an acutal "city" with all those tall buildings and dense population after Chinese communist took over. They were mostly refugees who escaped communist regime but couldn't get their proper residency in Hongkong. Beware that it had never been British terrority, but an Enclave of mainland Chinese government. PRC once set up a people's represnetation Assembly for that place, but no government was responsbile for what happened in there.

So many delightful memories, never any serious problems as you would expect in densely populated cities.
I walked the streets and alleys ALONE late at night, I was obviously an outsider, never a problem.
All the Chinese were impressive, helpful and always good to me.
