The third installment of the popular Mario series came out in February 1990 and introduced many new ideas for Mario games: a world map, usable items, and the ability to fly. At this past Awesome Games Done Quick, $1,025,000 was raised for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. It only took a week of continuous streaming, 18,000 donors, and many many runners to achieve. A big thanks to everyone responsible for these amazing numbers, what a humbling achievement. For comparison, last year's event raised just under $500,000.

I like how everyone in the comments are complaining about Kirua's accent. He was kind enough to come to this event and learn English. If you learned French, you obviously aren't going to be perfect, and neither is Kirua in English. On top of that, he is raising money to fight cancer and everyone is worried about not being able to understand him. Try going to a new place and not having the best grasp of the language. (You'll sound foreign too)

Watching this 9 years too late, I really miss Kirua, he was such a GOAT SMB3 runner and his bond with Mitch is forever cemented in history. They are also super nice to each other which is humbling to see in such a competitive sport as speedrunning. Commentating was also superb. All around amazing video. Having Tompa there is also clutch; he knows facts about the game like no one else.
Having Tompa there is literally clutch, as in he's clutching his baby blanket while he furiously beats off during this run.

Has anyone else noticed that the numbered stages in Dark Land seem to follow the theme of the previous worlds?
Stage 1 is a plain/grassland theme, and stage 2 is a desert with the angry sun.
Finally a cooperative speedrun...

I'm more than totally shocked I know something the speed runners don't know. The Hand-grabber staged are not RNG at all, they depend entirely on a time-cycle, and if you watch the animation of those stage tiles that animation directly correlates to the time cycle. I can walk across all three tiles without getting grabbed just by watching the tile animation.

This was the first game I ever owned/played. I think I was 5 or 6 years old. It's awesome to see these people speed through it, I remember all the trouble I had with this and blaming my brother on my mistakes... He did the same to me so it's okay, right?
This became relevant when Summoning Salt made a video of the history of the 100% speedrun. All I gotta wonder is what would have happened if Mitch was a girl, just for that part.

Haha, I don't think I'm as good as these guys, but as a kid I'd play the first part of the game (first couple of worlds) the same way as they did. Except I'd get all the goodies. That's what you get when there's no savegame possibility. :)

I am a bit surprised they are not using the 2 flutes that are available in the first world. Wouldn’t that be faster, cause you can jump to world 8 immediately after completing world 1?
20:46 it seems like if the character has full P speed when he enters the black area, and you jump on time you always get a star. If the character reaches P speed after the black zigzag you might not get a star.

White mushrooms are skipped because you can’t die in the level, it would just be pointless button mashing. Since coin ships isn’t an extra level but instead something that a hammer brother can turn into, it doesn’t matter if they do hammer brothers or coin ships to make it 100%, they obviously prefer hammer brothers because it’s faster.
