The Garmin Varia head and tail light integration plus the emergency safety call feature is worth the extra cost. Can't put a price on safety! I tried the Wahoo and though it is a nice computer, much prefer the Garmin 1030.

I actually hate my garmin 820. I got it fully because of the emergency alert. I doubt it would even work though. The 1030 wasn't out yet or I would have got that. I have decided that when the new wahoo computer comes out I will definitely be switching... either to that or the karoo hammerhead. Haven't done much research on either one. I wish I liked my 820 as much as you like your 1030. Garmin is ruined in my mind. This is my first and last garmin. I have heard that their 820 is be far the worst, most problematic bike computer they've made yet though. But there are so many other good options now that are so much cheaper I don't feel that it makes sense to go with garmin anymore.

I fully agree. My 820 is unbelievably infuriating. I actually just had mine replaced with a refurb. It was well out of warranty but had a rare issue where it cleared its gps firmware i guess it was. This caused it to not pick up satellite at all. It was trash at that point. Crappy product but at least their customer service backed their product and sent me another one. This one actually works a lot better. I think I got a complete lemon but garmin is still dead in my mind. The year and a half of raising my blood pressure when using it has made sure of that. Then this one dies I will immediately be switching to the wahoo or karoo hammerhead. Hopefully the new version of the wahoo will be out. I want the body of the element bolt with the size of the element. I don't think I will ever buy a touch screen bike computer again unless it actually works. Like the karoo looks nice but I don't know if it would work with gloves. probably just better to stick with buttons. Touchscreen isn't easy to deal with when flying down a hill and want to see how far till your turn. Especially with the outrageously infuriating 820 touchscreen.

Bit late to the table. Garmin 1000 power button problems, easy fix, but Garmin offer of refurb £199 if I send my unit back as well is a cop out, when repair would be cheap enough. So doctored power button and now looking for a new unit, but not spending £500 quid on a unit that might not work in 3yrs time. Wahoo Elemnt or Bolt is the question.

It's all about power usage. It takes a lot more power to make high res colour touch screens work. Mobiles use 6 or more times more power than this Garmin. Hardware in the Wahoo is surely worse - black and white low res no touch screen. And the Wahoo is around the same price as the new Edge Explore from Garmin - which is a colour touch screen. The very latest Garmin touch screens have improved a lot now (1030 and Edge explore).

One major oversight in this review: the Wahoo does not actually navigate. It can display a breadcrumb trail and if you create a ride with RidewithGPS it has turn by turn information, but if you go off route, you are on your own. The Garmin will revise your route on the fly and get you back on track. The Garmin also provides turn by turn for Strava routes and gpx files without turn by turn information (although it is a pain to get gpx files in the device). The Wahoo does neither. With the Wahoo you can only get an emergency fix by choosing a destination through the phone app and uploading that to your device. Anyway, i have both and when you look at ease of use the Wahoo wins hands down. When you look at navigation, the Wahoo is very far behind.

Having come from a Garmin 1000 to the Wahoo element I can say that the navigation is definitely via the map on the Wahoo. The recalculation feature was one that I had to turn off on my garmin as it constantly wanted to take me off route, do u turns and was not all that editable on the fly. Plus the turn by turn does not just switch off for no reason which my Garmin did constantly.

I used Garmins for many years. My 810 still works but is also still quite quirky, and after messing about with demo edge 1000 and 1030 units, I purchased an Elemnt. The Garmin radar is a neat gimmick for those who are unaware, with diminished hearing, or too cool to use a mirror. It is available for use with it’s own display , so you don’t need to have an edge 1030. And I don’t need for my lights to be controlled by my bike computer. I have fingers that can do that, and other companies make far better lighting than Garmin.

What I love at the edge devices is that you can change the maps. I use openmtbmaps and they are really cool, because they use color to Show which way you have, like asphalt or not and then it Shows you how good you can drive this with a bike.

Great video, but I'm not entirely sure that this is the right comparison to make. Flagship or not, are the two really aimed at the same section of the market? Garmin has a big screen to see maps, Wahoo is more simple and cheaper. Wouldn't the Garmin 520 be a better comparison? Early doors for me, my Garmin edge 800 after 5 years and thousands of miles has given up the ghost. Whilst it served it's time it was far from perfect and as I travel often with my bike I have lost count of the missing maps after download and corrupted SD cards, the constant worry if the thing will pick up a GPS signal when in a foreign land and all the other quirks that Garmin ownership brings was a deal breaker when looking at a new device. Yesterday I purchased a Wahoo Bolt and within 15 minutes I had it setup and all of my maps loaded from Strava and Ridewithgps all ready to go with zero drama, this morning I went out on a test ride and whilst the Data fields needed a tweak I would say within 10 minutes my Garmin was not missed at all. The turn by turn with the Ridewithgps maps was flawless and I look forward to giving it a shack down in the next few weeks in the heat and humidity of Asia. I would also add that I was not convinced that setting up the head unit with a Android was something I wanted but TBH it was a breeze, I have not loaded an activity to direct to Strava just yet via the app only via a USB connection and FIT. file which was the same as it would have been on the Garmin. Something I have noticed is the elevation gained is far higher on the Wahoo, this mornings ride which is a route I do very often is showing about 400ft more on the Wahoo?.. Regards

The two main differences: The Garmin battery didn't even last a full 10 hour day on the road whereas the Wahoo does, Garmin software isn't nearly as easy to use and frankly confuses me and you can't synch rides with RWGPS over the air. The Wahoo just plain works without any frustrations. It's like Garmin=Microsoft and Wahoo=Apple.

  • @halfglassfull
    @halfglassfull Před 5 lety

Using Edge 520 for two years bought the 1030 two months ago. In response to the negative comments, Garmin 520 had some issues up front and resolved over time with firmware updates. The 1030 no different. Most tech these days is so internally complex there will be issues. My Apple TV 4k is great but has been through 3 firmware updates over 3 months. The Edge 1030 has some issues mostly for with bluetooth connecting and uploads to Connect/Strava but eventually I get it to connect and expect they will fix those bugs over time. Love the touch screen and ability for my old eyes to see the fields especially at night. Presents me with more data and manipulating the choice of fields is easier. The Edge 520 is a pain to press buttons vs 1030 touch screen. The on screen mapping/turn by turn is so much better than the 520. I could go on. Some people in my bike club have Wahoos and curse Garmin but I already placed my bet and have no regrets.

I recall an interview a couple years back on why bike computers don't use standard mobile phone screens. And that is because of sweat. Get a single drop of sweat or water on a standard mobile phone touch screen the touch commands cease to exist until you wipe/dry the surface of the screen. Sweat and/or rain would negate the functionality. That's why they have been using an "old school" pressure sensitive touch screen. Functions regardless of moisture.

plus they use a lot more power. I use my phone as a nav but it uses a ton of power and the touch screen hates any moisture.

Hey Everyone, thanks for the review. Several question if yiu dont mind 1) so Wahoo could be paired with Komot, but the Komot or Wahoo app should be running in parallel? Correct? The unit Just transmitted the route from the Phone to the unit? If this a case, so both Phone and Unit are draining the battery, and if you are in off road terrain you are stuck? Or still can use Komot or Google with offline maps? How the battery and the overall navigation will be look like? 2) with Garmin, its close to Phone and its techy with features, how Is the battery life off road and navigation? Can it be Used on itsown or require a Phone app to use, transmit the data points? What you recomend for the touring, mtb, bikepacking? Thanks in advance.

I'm in the market Garmin pissed me off with my Fenix 3 sapphire the damn thing is over a mile off from my phone and Garmin wouldn't do anything.

At first I was dubious about having to use the Smart phone and elemnt, but I found it to be great. I have had some enjoyable hours getting to know my new toy. Easy to use if you are savvy with computers as most of us are these days. Cadence and speed Sensors are great compared to some I have used.

Doing better than me. After 3 years I had my 3rd replacement unit fail and when you take into account the navigation never worked properly, you could not use the Auto off mode as it would result in the screen not coming back on (this was every unit), random battery drain, sweat and rain causing the screen to change I was so fed up I demanded a refund from Garmin Australia. Got it as well once I threatened them with a report to the ACCC.

I love my Garmin 1030 because of one thing the Wahoo can NOT do. Integration with the Varia tail light. If you have not used it or tested it, you should. Most of us ride in areas where there are vehicles passing by an I like to know when there is one behind me coming up, how fast they are going and how close they are as well as how many. The computer beeps when it senses a vehicle and also shows you on the display how many, how fast and how close. The tail light shines faster and brighter as vehicles approach. You can't get that on a Wahoo. Love my Kick'r, but Garmin rules for bike computers because of the safety features. Additionally, I don't believe the Wahoo has the emergency call feature that will, when connected to your phone via Bluetooth, call a list of people if it senses a sudden stop (wreck) and give the person your coordinates. The Varia front light does something similar where it can shine brighter when it senses a vehicle coming closer to you.

Carlos Roy I use V3 pedals, with a Elemnt Bolt and I get most of the cyckling dynamics. You dont get pedal offset and standing sitting % but you get LR balance, smoothnes, PP and PPP so allot of data is there, and GARMIN have made the cycling dynamics available to others so I would not be surprised to see wahoo adopting them. For the pricediference its a no brainer for me. Dont let the screen size scare you the contrast is SUPER and the fuctionality with strava and ridewith gps or komoot is unreal! All syncs as soon as you turn the unit on. No. Cables no pc no mess. I can plan a route on my laptop or ipad using ridewith GPS and save the route. As soon as i rurn on my Bolt it synca new routs. BOOM

the Garmin touch screens are rubbish. Sweat, rain, sweaty hands all cripple the touch screen, not to mention that in cold weather, full fingered gloves render the touch screen useless. The Wahoo uses buttons, which work with gloves, sweaty hands and your beads of sweat won’t send the screen into a furious fit.
Set up in the Wahoo is soooo much easier and simpler than the Garmin and changing your screens and data is also so much easier compared to the Garmin, which seems to be stuck 5 years behind.

The edge uses wifi better then the elemnt. All in all I don't understand why you say that the elemnt is better. For training, the analyse and the navigation is the edge whay better!
