    A ship is not a hull, clad of steel, but a system, a complex, almost organism. A warship even more so. Every inch made for use, made to purpose, every cable, every bolt, elegant, simple and needed. Not unlike a human body. Not unlike a Being. But Beings have personality, have quirks and preferences, so do ships. Warships even more so. It's hard to love a thing. a huge piece of metal, hard to love a ship, it is a machine and you live within it. You live within it. Every corridor, every hatch, every ladder, every station, every bruised knee, every bruised forehead, every cut, every long, long night, every never ending storm that made those bruises and cuts every thing that made you a part of the ship, marked it as...home. And a ship too, is not just an elaborate pile of devices and hard surfaces, but a collection of men, of Humans, of Brothers in Arms, a family in its home. A family. A family and a piece of a person's life they have given, to serve, to Honor, to protect and to defend. A price well paid for a kind of life shared by few, a price that may include the loss of that life. That too is family, that too is home.

    I joined this ship as it finished fitting out in Newcastle and formed part of its first ships company. It makes me sad to see it like this, but it gave good service. Bye from Weapons Engineering Mechanic (o) Holmes

    What a sad way to say goodbye, especially for those who sailed on her - more than just a fighting ship but a 'home' too!

    As a ship lover I always feel sad to see the end of service, apart that is from today’s cruise monsters which I loathe because for me they’re not real ships just floating theme parks/shopping malls.

    • @chrismots6479
      @chrismots6479 Před rokem

      Im a ship lover as well bro and have a big interest in warships but with that logic "cruise ships are just floating theme parks/shopping malls" we can also assume that warships are just floating gun platforms. Every ship has its own duty and purpose so why loathe...

    • @richardcline1337
      @richardcline1337 Před rokem

      I feel the same way which is why I have NO intentions of ever taking a cruise just to waste my money going nowhere and doing nothing. These cruise monsters look more like hat boxes stacked one on top of the other and nothing like real ships. To me their are just hideous piles of metal.

      With her military trappings removed and a proper civilian superstructure she would make quite a handsome yacht....and probably pretty fast as well.

    I saw HMS York when she was being built on the Tyne and have photos of her. She was one who managed to escape Thatcher and Knott’s axe. She looks in a much worse state here after many years glorious service.

    They should try to find buyers for these ships. Many navies would love to have refitted ships like these. Modernize them and make them useful. Secon and third rank navies could use older, but refitted ships.

    • @THEFBDJJB
      @THEFBDJJB  Před 3 lety +2

      Sorry for the delay replying Rivco500, I believe it is reinforcement of the hull, deck edge stiffening with a steel beam, I'm sure I read somewhere that these stretched versions of the T42 were reinforced after the earlier batch (2) suffered stress/crack problems

      All the Type 42s had their hulls strengthened, on batch 1 and 2 it was a square box section welded on the deck, but on the batch 3 it was fitted outboard so more obvious.

    It's a pity but now they can replace these tin cans with proper battle ships with 16 inch weapons pumping anti air craft guns and other anti sship aircraft weapons. Nice ships though pity they have to be scrapped instead of museum pieces . They helped win the falkland war.

    • @richardcline1337

      Pearl Harbor wrote the death knell for battleships in any navy. Their time has long since come and gone, replaced by massive aircraft carriers.
