5 starters, 5 backups, and 3 rotations players. A total of 13 roster spots on each Ultimate Team. It's not just about talent, but it's about building a team that works and gels together.

The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.

Hell what about Jamal Mashburn. He and Jimmy Jackson were great players in the 90's and both were around 20-24ppg. Also the young version of Jason kidd. The better version of kidd imo.
Marion is definitely an all time Mav. he's probably the 7th best Mav ever and the best overall defender Marion absolutely shut down Wade and Lebron in the 2011 finals. Also Shut down Kobe in the WCSF. Marion is a top 5 SF/ PF Swingman Defender or all Time. league just didn't give him awards every day cause he was on a High Scoring Team He was a Top Defender in the NBA Each Season.
First off I LOVE this series. This is one of the best basketball series I've seen by far. However, there are some changes I would make to this team. First I would keep the starting lineup the same, but I would make some changes to the bench. The first change I would make to the bench would be my PG in the second lineup would be Jason Kidd. Jason Kidd was co-rookie of the year in his time with Dallas and I believe he is a better floor general than Nash, and Kidd is top 20 in all-time three point field goals. With all the scoring in the starting lineup and coming off the bench, Kidd seems like a better fit to me. I would also add Roy Tarpley and James Donaldson to the second unit. With all those jump shooters you're going to need some offensive rebounding, and in their era they were two of the best. They also had better overall careers as Mavs than Jay Vincent. Steve Nash would be my first rotation player, Derek Harper would be my second rotation player, and I would add Detlef Schrempf to my rotation. I know Schrempf was young and he didn't get much playing time but he did show flashes of what he would later become. Couple that with the fact that the Mavs teams of the 80's were so stacked that it was hard for him to get playing time but I think he would be a great addition. Sorry to Shawn Bradley and Jay Vincent, but I think that team adds just a bit more balance to a run and gun team which is what this Mavs team is.

I would put Kidd with the second unit and make Nash rotational. Not only is Kidd a great floor general, but out of all the PG’s on the roster, he will (arguably) be the best on ball defender and rebounder. He will start many fast breaks on his own.
That's a tough one. Kidd didn't have prime years in Dallas but did have more well rounded stats though Nash is the much better shooter. Depends on the line up
I’d put Rolando at the 2 instead of Kyrie- He was a bucket and did much more for the Mavs in his time there. I understand why you’d pick Kyrie based on talent, but I definitely think there isn’t enough data to go off of to make that choice as the starter yet.

Jim Jackson and Jamal Mashburn should've made the cut. The 3J's were a problem in the back court for that brief period of the 90s

Really glad Derek Harper is on here, underrated player. Mavs have/had a lot of great options. Guys like Perkins,Tarpley,Donaldson,Devin Harris,Josh Howard,Shawn Marion also came to mind. Other than Kyrie, I agree with your picks.
Trapley didn't play long enough, No to Donaldson, Tyson and KP were better. Kyrie hasn't played for the Mavs enough
@@JimBrave-ri1oc Yea, I don't disagree with his picks. Maybe the only one I would have added was Shawn Marion. Very versatile defender, seemed to almost always guard the main options, no matter the position they played. Kyrie wouldn't be there, atleast let's wait until the season is over.
The Mavericks are one of those franchises that really has turned it around the past 15 years. Notice how 4 out of 5 starters on this Ultimate list are dudes that played in the NBA within the last 10 years, i.e. modern players. Most other teams have an Ultimate list of players from years ago. The Dallas Mavericks for years kinda existed in no mans land in the NBA, not far ahead of say the Atlanta Hawks/Sacramento Kings or something, but after the 2011 championship with Dirk, and now having Luka and Kyrie, they have really emerged.

Marion would definitely round out the teams defensive weaknesses, while still maintaining the offense.

The Monster Mash No defense could even affect his scoring in the mid 90's. Scored 50 on Pippen In Chicago.
It's a straight up crime that he didn't even get an honorable mention.

Not enough defense. Kyrie as the 2 guard and Nash off the bench is unnecessary given the other offensive options. Those spots should be held by better defenders. Porzingis should also be in a big spot in at least the second lineup since he can offer both rim protection and floor spacing. In his 2019-20 season, he averaged 20.4 points, 2 blocks, and 9.5 rebounds. This is a bit less blocks than Sean Bradley, but otherwise, he is much better as an overall player.

Would absolutely love to watch this team, so much offensive capability with Tyson Chandler providing some much needed rim protection, plus all potential rotations with Nash and Kidd would make such a free flowing team
Dirk was just on fair decent ok Rim protector at 10 Defensive Rebounds per game which is top 5 all time and also 1.3 blocks per game at the rim in his Prime. Someday lebron will be 11 ppg and lose some of his athleticism then kids will know how Great Dirk was and everyone was in their PRIMES. Even Garnett couldn't run and jump by year 17 after all the battles in the League. also being 37 years old and not 23 anymore in their Youthful prime. Dirk is the only one that gets criticized for this and put down on rankins of defense cause of this. There is no reason to think a player averaging 10 Defensive Rebounds and 1.3 blocks isn't good at defense. That is just nonsense. Not to mention his 1.3 steals per game and all were at the Rim when a player was shooting.
Truth 25 year old Dirk was Quicker and Faster than Giannis.

All offense, no defense
Marion, Chandler, Dirk was a good defender contrary to idiots opinion. Dirk was a Very Strong Active Athletic 7 foot 250 and would rebound over the rim at about 20 per game in the playoffs. No one could rebound with him. not even Duncan and Garnet. He would always go for 20 boards on them. Also 2 blocks and 2 steals. He would always do that against them.
Finley was also a good Wing Defender that could guard many positions. Mark Aguirre and Derek Harper also was a good defender. Remember they are the only team in NBA history to SHUT DOWN lebron.
Series and video's like this are interesting but I wish the creators would make a rule where a player can only play for ONE all-time team. It would make it far more interesting and challenging, when you can't double or triple dip on the same player.
Yep, that's how I make my all-time teams on 2k. No double dipping with players.

Great video, Jonny! The Mavs have a lot of great guards. Luka, Kyrie, Nash, Kidd, Harper, Terry, and Blackman are all solid. Their frontcourt is less stacked, but they have some balance there b/w some more defensively minded players, like Chandler and Bradley and ones much better on offense like Dirk.
It would a fun team to watch.

I have an issue with Kyrie on the Mavs team because as of this video, Kyrie has played less than 1 season without anything notable. I feel like that matters
@@ammonhurst3026 Yeah really it should be someone like Jason Kidd, Rolando Blackmon or Derek Harper ahead of Kyrie Irving. Any longtime NBA fan, especially old school Mavericks fan would agree. That being said, if Kyrie Irving helps the Mavs win a title this year, that all changes and he immediately leaps ahead of Harper, Blackmon, Kidd. It's hilarious how so many people in Dallas called Kyrie a little bitch when he was in New Jersey and Boston, but now that he's a Maverick everyone loves him.
Ngl, in my case i wont put Kyrie, he have played less than half season in Dallas, and all time, he is not needed. Luka, Aguirre and Dirk are great scorers already, and Kyrie needs the ball in his hand to operate most of the time. I will put Kidd in the starting five, because of his chemistry with with Dirk and Chandler, and his defense. Also, in 2008 he kinda have a good 3pt shot, if you let him open he will take it. Shawn Marion defense is needed too, and he has played alongside Nash and The 2011 Mavs. Maybe because i put the Matrix in the team, i wont need Vincent as a PF, so i could take Kyrie from the bench, but it doesnt feel right either putting Kyrie over Vincent, chemistry wise, maybe, Kyrie is a great 3pt shooter and shot creator.

I would NOW, but when I made the Bucks video, I don’t think Dame had even played a game with them yet 😂

It doesn't make any sense at all to put him on an all time team when he's only played 10 games for them also he's not a SG he is a PG. when Finley is easily the second best Mav of all time averaging 22 in the Era of 81-79 games is the sames as averaging 35 today. @@elpedromoin especially didn't his own rules say he wanted to used players that have played there for atleast two full seasons
Loved the video, but I was suprised Roy Tarpley and Sam Perkins didn't make the team. No disrespect to Shawn Bradley, but Tarpley had the potential to be one of the best bigs and rebounders of the 90s
Great vid as usual , and I'm really enjoying this series. The only change I'd make to this roster is I'd put Sam Perkins on the 2nd unit at the PF to give them more shooting and another defensive presence. Also, I'm kinda surprised Jamal Mashburn didn't get an honorable mention. I know they were a bit dysfunctional but that early 90s team with the 3 Js( Jim Jackson, Jason Kidd, and Jamal Mashburn were fun to watch at times.

Yeah, I liked Bradley a lot And he was really good for about 4 Seasons But I think KP's 3 NBA covid shortened seasons still outweighed that. Also KP being the only athlete over 6'7 to come back fully and even better after an ACL Was Really something. Casuals didn't want to acknowledge it cause they wish they had his face and physic but he is the FIRST Athlete in World history to come back from an ACL that is over 6'7.

As a Mavs fan, this would be my squad:
Starting 5: Kidd, Luka, Aguirre, Dirk, Tyson
2nd Unit: Nash, Rolando, Finley, Marion, Bradley.
Bench: Terry, Harper, Howard.
If Luka and Kidd can't play off of each other, Harper would be in the starting 5 for his defense, while Kidd become the 2nd unit's pg, and Nash goes to the bench.
Really surprised Jamal Mashburn wasn't even an honorable mention? He played his first few seasons there and I think averaged like 25 a game in his 2nd yr. Used to have a few of his rookie cards so remember it well.

Loving the series so far, with how wonky 2k simulation is. I hope you run it for multiple seasons instead of just one for more conclusive results
I'm starting Kidd at 1, Kyrie at 2, Luka at 3, with Dirk and Chandler. I'm bringing Steve Nash, Jason Terry, Mark Aguirre, Shawn Marion, and KP off the bench. For my alternates, I'm bringing J.J. Barea, Michael Finley, and Seth Curry. I'd rather like to bring Josh Howard, and might if I didn't think Barea would be so valuable for the locker room. I think this is probably my lineup that's the most different from yours.
Yes. Yes, that first string should work even better. Luka's an elite PG, sure, but if you bring in another elite PG and let Luka focus more on shooting...yes.

Kyries hasn't played long enough on the Mavs. Nor will he probably cause the team is losing a lot and fans are wondering why he hurts his finger so he sits out 30 games. honestly he's not as good as Nash, Kidd and Doncic as PG's. Anyone the team doesn't need 4 PG's.

I would start Nash, Finley and Nowitzki because of chemistry reasons as they all played together at the start of 00s. Probably add Luka and Chandler to the starting 5 with them. That would free Blackman and Aguirre to play together on the bench 5 like they did play together through majority of the 80s.

@@JimBrave-ri1oc Cooper, Shaq could play defense in his Lakers days, West was a good defender, Kobe Bryant in his prime age on the time Lakers time could play both sides of ball, Magic has the size advantage over other point guards, Anthony Davis is good shot blocker, Lebron James before the ankle injuries still good not great.

I remember tracking Dirks 2nd season and 3rd season. In the game he was there the only allowed 97 ppg. the games he didn't play the allowed 115 per game. So that is the FACTS I have THE STATS. I'll post them here.

I think Kristaps should be there instead of Jay Vincent if you're really making a team that would work. Having Jay Vincent sub for Dirk would drastically change the tempo of the game because he's not a stretch big like Kristaps. Having Kristaps sub for Dirk will keep the pace and space system intact even for the bench. Also KP average 20 PPG 8.8 REB 1.7 BLK 35% 3pt

none cause everyone that knows who to talk sports knows that when making an all time team you don't just pick some random player that happened to be the 4th option 1 seasons then was on to the next team. Vince playing 1 season as a 4th option late in his career doesn't' make all time teams. Carter probably only makes the All Time Raptors team a team he quit on.

I would go with Porzingis over Brandley. He may not be as good of a rim protector but he’s still a solid one and is a significantly better offensive player. Just my opinion though.

This Mavs team is a playoff team. The Lakers are clearly the best Ultimate team and in the west I see the Rockets, Warriors, and Spurs finishing 2-4 in some order with the Suns, Kings, Mavericks and Jazz probably 5-8. Ig we do a play in tournament setup I like the Nuggets at 9 and I'm not sure about 10. The Mavericks team has a really dynamic starting lineup. Adding Aguirre and Dirk to a lineup that already has Luka and Kyrie? Unstoppable. When Nash and Blackmon are second unit and Kidd and Harper are end of the bench you know you've got depth. Depending this team can finish as high as 5 or as low as 8 in the west. FWIW a weakness of the Nuggets is that while Jokic is their best player, their second and third best players are clearly Carmelo and English who can't both start because they play the same position.
The Lakers have No Defense for the Shooting of the Mavs, Also the Lakers don't have any shooting. how do they even begin to defend KP and Dirk 35 feet away draining Threes from all over.
Mavericks should be at least a play in team, but their defense is shaky (yes IK they have chandler but with the all time teams two below average defenders can be a killer and the Mavs have THREE)
Rolando Blackman has something to say about this list
Sean Marion might be a good small forward as it’s a very short team. Otherwise, Michael Finley isn’t a small forward.

@@undrseige I think that that dirk lead team that season to do what they did - they would beat any team Luka could play on whether or not he wins a championships such as Dirks opponent did, so Dirk wouldn't ever rank worst on the top player lists than Luka. So stat wise sure, but so have players had better stats than Jordan while not actually being better than him.

Nash was better than doncic. I watched both their Careers. Nash played to WIN He didn't mess around.

I would have a couple of changes starting SG is Blackman. Back up PG is Kidd not Nash being that Kidd was better defender. Potzingis over Shawn Bradley
Finley was A lot better. Finley was the Number 1 option from 1996 to 2002 Blackman was never the number 1 option. also he wasn't as good as Finley. Finley used to regularly go for 35 on Jordan, Carter and Kobe.

Really puts into perspective just how awful the Mavs have been defensively. Chandler would be the only reason the Mavs wouldn't allow 150+ vs the other all time teams. I think just for defensive purposes, I'd play Kidd over Nash.

Yes they are. lakers have no answer for the Shooting of Dirk and KP. cause who would Shaq and Wilt guard. They can't guard the Three point line at all! lakers have the worst shooting. Dallas has the Best shooting. They would stretch them out too much and the lakers would have to go away from the Team and find a stretch 4 which they have never had. I guess horry but who else

The Three Centers I picked were Porzingis, Tyson Chandler and Sam Perkins the best Stretch 5 in NBA history he was also a good shot blocker and post up player aswell.

Mostly I agree with your list of players. In this case I think Kyrie needs to stay out of the conversation. I would give Kidd the starting point guard position while Luka being the 2. Nash at reserve PG is ok. Instrad of Kyrie the last rotation player would be Roy Tarpley.
Other than Nowitzki, the Mavericks haven't had solid bigmen sorry to say.

Ok finally a guy that I can tell actually watched the Mavs in the 90's. Though I'd still put Nash over Doncic For many Basketball Reasons. They're good reasons that make the team better as well.
I would of started Jason Kidd to add more defense and someone who can run the offense if Luka is having an off night
But Lukas offence is way more valuable, if Luka has an off night then bring in Kidd, but by no means should he be starting over him

Why would he be on the Lakers he only played like 50 game sther and only averaged like 11 ppg and 6 ast. Kobe purposely froze him out cause of jealousy. Nash was like 38 years old by then.

True. I'd bring Doncic off the bench for several reaons. It's better to have a 6'7 utility swingman off the bench as the 6th man also he hasn't yet proven to be a leard of a team or winner. Nash was all that.
