Thanks good review I've bought the s62 and used it first time yesterday and was all over the place with it. First off it thought I was on the 10th . My course is a 9 hole with differing t boxes. Why it starts at 10 is beyond me and I can't tell it I'm doing 9 holes. The app is useless as also doesn't allow me 9 holes and tells me it can't save my round as I have hole missing! I've got 3 club sensors and they worked OK. However when I used another club I didn't seem to get asked and so some of the shots are missed. I didn't manage to record thebputs properly and it seems if you move off the green before telling the watch you finished it thinks your still on the last hole even if you walking to the next hole. I found that useless. So I'll have to try and be more disciplined to check at the green and on the green when I finish. Perhaps I'll get a sensor for the putter. Anyway I'm a bit frustrated so I need to give it another go . The garmin app is awful and full of bugs and keeps crashing 😫. Thanks for the review though

Excellent review. The Skycaddie does do distance for each shot, all you do is hit the ball icon and select club. The Skycaddie also takes in slope if there is any.. I've used skycaddie devices for over 10 years and yes there is a subscription, however, it also has the best accuracy of any course. I play with several guys that have Garmins and when their device doesn't have the course, my Skycaddie always does. Currently using SX500, but wanting to switch to a watch.

The last yardage comparsion was different because the arrows next to the yardage on the Garmin reading counts for uphill/downhill lies, hence why the reading was so off. It's another great feature on the garmin, other than that it was a great review.

Thanks so much for the video. I was torn between the 2. But having to press a button to see the watch on the skycaddie seems very unnecessary. I can see having a club in one hand and having to press that button being a pain. I am looking at something I can wear as a smart watch when now playing golf as well and I would gather based on your opinion that the Garmin seems to fit that bill better with better battery life and not having to hit that stupid button just to see the screen!

Great review. Keep in mind, when each of the manufacturers have their gps maps created, they will naturally not be selecting the exact same location to identify the middle of the green. Middle of the green is therefore slightly arbitrary and wouldn't suggest it means either one is "wrong"...just that the distances are to slightly different points on the green. Garmin takes this by a mile to me...just wish it had the better screen (I'm strongly considering the Epix Gen 2 because of this...plus it's a great looking watch).

    • @LetsPlayThru
      @LetsPlayThru  Před 2 lety +1

Hi, good comparison, but as someone else said, you enabled the Plays Like feature on the Garmin on some of the holes! This is identifiable by the arrows next to the yardages! When you gave the Skycaddie 5, the Garmin would have given a similar yardage I'm sure if you had disabled the Plays Like feature..
Other plus point for the S62 is Garmin Pay, it comes in very handy!
Yes, the Garmin costs more but worth paying more IMHO for the extra features..

Presently weighing up whether to go range finder or gps watch, leaning towaed the latter (for ease of use vs digging out range finder each shot) so helpful analysis. Thank you. My only fear is I may simply not plug in the inputs at end of each hole as necessary so may not get the best out of it.... tbc

It's so intuitive and easy that it can quickly become second nature. If you don't hit every data point it won't be the end of the world either. You're right about ease of just having it close by. Also, they don't get left in carts like rangefinders. I literally had to put my name and phone number on mine because I left it behind so often.

    • @torch8922

The SkyCaddie has that feature, too. It also has a distance measuring feature that was not discussed in the video. It also has range rings which can be turned on or off, and set per your personal preference.
What it doesn’t have (which my GARMIN S6 has - note S6 not S60) is a slope correction feature.
A recent software update on the SkyCaddie included an option to extend the visible time of the screen beyond the original 30 seconds out to 45 seconds or never off, which I find to be a game changer in favor of the SkyCaddie.

Gr 8 review, Thx. Boot up time - great info. Battery charge time? Life in watch mode, and golf mode? You commented on screen visability in shade; what about sunlight? My Sky Caddie SX500 is useless in bright sunlight, although the company checked it out, advising to spec. I'm not going to buy one if it can't be read (we do sometimes get the sun in UK!) and a lot in the far East where I play - although caddies gets ticked off when they see their player use a GPS!
Can these watches withstand use in stream/sauna or swimming pool use to say 3 metres/15 feet? Is there a subscription with Garmin for GPS and or the the Garmin club statistics when in your Garmin account? Always use a Laser scope when playing to the green - OK! The watch size - I'll try one on - thx for the size observation. Once again Gr8 review.

  • @jonhoffm

Perhaps Garmin has updated the interface, but it would seem simple to streamline the score entry mode - on 1, it knows that you hit a driver, 9i, LW and made a 4 when you entered that info. From that, it knows you had 1 or 0 putts . If 1 then no penalty if 0 then 1 penalty. Just seems to not fully leverage the data it has. They could really push the CT10 sensor for the putter at least, then it should know how many putts already and you’d only need to confirm the score and the rest would track for you. That would certainly be a nice feature.

Great review! For the ranges…my understanding is that different companies determine the center of the green differently. Since no green is a perfect circle or square, the dead middle needs to be calculated with an algorithm…different companies use different algorithms I’m betting….That said, the distance to the back and front should be much closer than the distance to the center number. I asked this on another of your reviews with just the garmin watches, do you know if the SkyCaddie can be touched with the glove? I’m lefty, but golf righty, so my watch is on my left hand, and my glove on my left hand…

Hi James, first off, thanks so much for watching. Great question...This is my home course so which I often play twice weekly so I'm really familiar with the pin positions and they often stay the relatively the same for a few days. The S62 defaults to giving you front, middle and back - not exact. So you'll need to basically eyeball it. However, it also gives the ability to set a new pin position which is really cool. If a user sets the pin position then other users will see that update. Does that make sense?

I know this old. But at 17:08. The Garmin is giving more yardage's is because it;s telling you what the hole is playing like. Those black arrows beside the number. They will point up if the hole is playing longer and point down if the hole plays shorter. If you tape the numbers. The arrows will go away and it should read 338. Or close. I have a Garmin. After 3 yrs. Battery is not lasting very long. Hard to charge. Sweat gets into the charging ports. I have to scrape the prts and clean them. It's getting hard to charge. Thanks

You can mark your distances on the LX5. The yardages are different between the two watches, but you don't really know which is correct.
Most golfers can't control their distances that closely anyway so a few yards either way won't matter.

Great review of these two watch GPS's. One of the selling points the Sky Caddie makes is that they map each course by walking and maybe that will account the the yardage differences. At my playing level, that difference will not make that much of a difference.

GPS can be off quite a bit at times, normally. There are devices that use both the US and Russian sats and they are very accurate. But using just one, US for example, it can be off as much as 25'. It has a range of accuracy that changes from moment to moment. Also the Military/Government can take one down for reasons they won't explain. And it depends on how many you capture. Making GPS approaches in airplanes, for example, has higher minimums.....for a reason. It's not an ILS. The US government states the accuracy of it's GPS is +/- 25 feet. That's 50 feet it can 'move' on your map. BUT it can be higher for short periods...that is the average. LIke I say, to get really accurate readings you need something that captures US and Russian sats and can capture a high number of them and that would eat battery time. Watches aren't going to have great GPS antennas. GPS is just a big clock. 24,000 miles around the earth. 24 longitudinal sections, 24 hours in a day, 48 GPS/sats in the constellation. Hope that helps.

The accuracy review doesn’t really make sense. The watches will be locating the actual center of the green, whereas the rangefinder will be hitting the flag which - 95% of the time - even if it is situated in the center section of the green - would not be the actual center of the green.
Out of the 2 of the watches, the Garmin is reading from a map - similar to Google maps, whereas the Sky-caddie is based upon someone going to the course and physically mapping each hole. I’d say the Sky-caddie would be more accurate for front, center and back of the green and the rangefinder more accurate for pin position.
