No one realizes how much work it is until they do it!!! My process is to always get the layout done first. Then you can work on the organizing. 🤷🏻‍♀️ just how much brain works. Great job getting started!!!

I always start with the big stuff... clean out all the leftover stuff and sort it so that all your cupboards are empty and ready to be filled. Then I would do furniture placement... then move on to the decorating/boards/labelling etc after.

Tip….I always label one end and one side of the bins, that way no matter how you need to store them, you can always see a label. Saves so much time!

Have you considered looking up classroom set-up to-do lists? When I'm overwhelmed and lost on where to start, I find a premade list that works for me.
Also, it's so good that you're at school without any coworkers around. Even though it's great to see them, I can easily end up wasting time getting distracted, talking, and sometimes playing the comparison game, which affects my productivity.

Hang in there!! I have been doing this for more than 25 years and I get overwhelmed each year too! It WILL all come together. Email the assistant principal and ask where you can store the extra math manipulatives. They may have a room for it!! Some other teacher may want it. You have enough in your individual bins!! Can’t wait to see your progress!!

Flip your 10 drawer cart so it faces like your desk and put your monitor on it so you can pull your desk out a little more. You can also take the wheels off your cart so it feels more stable.

I'm so overwhelmed. I have this ideal dream classroom I want, but as a first year teacher, I just don't have the money to get all the stuff I want & need.

Don't stress over how it looks. As long as you can teach and love your students in the space that is all that matters.

  • @haleyrowe9900

Just a tip- Each student will need more ones than 10 for regrouping. I put 20 in my kits.

Mikayla, it's great to watch first-year teachers figure out how they want to set up their rooms. I am a para right now and finishing up my master's in special education before teaching. Every year I have had to help set the classroom up with the lead teacher. People do not realize how many things go into getting a room ready. I am getting my stuff together now, hopefully, it helps.

Your teacher desk may be like mine, where there are locked. I usually open and close the middle drawer (sometimes I have to close it hard) and I hear a “click” and the other drawers can finally be opened! Once you shut the side drawers, you’ll hear another “click” and they’ll lock back up! Hope that makes sense!
I would put all the manipulative in that big clear bin and then put it in the restroom.

  • @dogmom371
    @dogmom371 Před 3 lety +1

    Nice!
Tip…if u want to secure the labels and be able to remove them cleanly (no residue left behind) I use the THICK heavy duty clear packing tape (the thin ones are super sticky and impossible to remove) or clear contact paper! It protects the label for years and peels off the bins cleanly, with absolutely no residue behind, even after YEARS of it being stuck on the bins! That’s what I always do in the classroom and at home.

I love this video. I usually feel the same way when I bring a bunch of things in at once. I've learned to make a to-do list before I get to the school and attack the list one item at a time. As for the desk, look underneath on the side top corner, there is probably a lock there. You'll probably need the matching key for the code that's etched on the lock. The custodians may have a copy available. If not, you should be able to get a copy made (just provide the code to the locksmith). I wish you a fabulous school year!💕

You got this! I feel you with the excitement issue. It's truly just overwhelm. I am going into year 7 with a 7th new room and have been so excited to set up. Got in the classroom after moving my things across from my old room and just sat because I was just so overwhelmed. The excitement is still there though! Don't stress your self out and enjoy the process. You'll never forget your first year!

you can pull your desk out further. just slide a student desk or skinny table in to set your monitor on by the wall. You will have more desk surface to work on and you will gain a bit more room for that drawer cart. otherwise, you can get an extender/coupler for that computer wire. I got some at radio shack years ago. can probably get them on amazon.

  • @flatwhiskers

Leave the math manipulative in their bags until you’ll need them. Perhaps store in restroom out of the way.

  • @westiebesties1321

With those desks try having the middle drawer pulled out while opening the right side drawers. I know sometimes that is what locks them!

I don't know about any one else but base ten blocks seem to multiple on their own sort of like socks in a dryer.

  • @thebrailletrailliteracyaty7289

Does your desk have a drawer in the center? Some old desks have a little lever that you have to flip by/inside the center drawer to make the side drawers open. (I was totally convinced my desk was broken my first year and then a veteran teacher showed me how to open it 😂
There may be a trick to it. You’re doing great- the first year is hard but you will never be a first year teacher again so just remember you are learning!
