Trinidad and Tobago is a South American country among the Caribbean and near Venezuela... So I don't get why on 1:09 people were surprised that Botswana was the "second-in-a-row" African to win Miss Universe when the last African to win before 1999 was Namibia's Michelle McLean in 1992. 1992 & 1999 isn't exactly "in-a-row".

You can't criticise a person who is naturally physically beautiful or not beautiful because it's the luck of nature (and the medias ideals). What is vanity and ugly is the obsession of beauty over all other characteristics (paying money for plastic surgery or completely changing who you are to be a beauty queen, never sell your soul for physical attention) and men who want to dominate beautiful women like possessions.

Is not obsession, is just how people perceive things, for example there is wrong concept of self esteem, and now almost everybody believe that is how you look at the mirror, seriously people almost everyone believe in that, and for me self esteem is what you achieve in life that's all about there is a lot of beautiful people feel sad because they don't know what to do with their life, and the real boost is when you don't have anything and you achieve great things in life, there is what you really discover what is being sexy, what is being smart is what you understand what is the lost concept of conquer a woman, because you are the handsome guy always all come to you, you have money and all go to you, but the real thing is when you don't have nothing and you really go for it and make that person get in love in you, when you go to school when you work and you really love what you do and you are good at it and to many things, that's what's makes you beautiful.

No, not usually. Some years he just turned up at the last minute for the final show, other years he hang around for a few weeks and got to know the girls- and had input into the top 15 selection (but not the final crowning). My understanding is that he never had any influence over the crowning and this may be why sometimes they crowned girls he dislikes or who he had no interest in. It was bonus for him if he liked them or if they enhanced his image. He also probably didn't have the power to sack any of the girls. Of the 4 he openly disliked (Alicia Machado, Oxana Federova, Natalie Glebova and Paulina Vega), all kept their crown and did a great job as Miss Universe except Oxana Federova. She says she quit, he says she was fired. The truth is probably that he didn't have the power to sack her so he set her up in that interview to humiliate her and forced her to quit.

to be honest, while making the video and reviewing footage I came to the conclusion he had very little power within the organiazation which was and is run by a woman called Pauline Shugurt. He may have wanted to look like a pimp but the girls were most protected from him, especially after the Miss Russia incident. He was the major investor but the deal was about PR- he used the girls to enhance his image and they used his NY tycoon image to reinforce theirs. Some of them like Miss Australia and Miss Mexico became friends and learned to sell their image etc. Miss Australia has her name on everything from underwear to tequila in Australia, and is a selfmade millionaire. My conclusion was Trump is a PR guy and celebrity first, thats his business selling to the public more than real estate or building (which mostly also involves just loaning his image to other peoples project to brand them Trump). I think the US should not be afraid of him, but they should be very afraid of the people that hired or did a deal with him and will ultimately have the power. Who are his real backers who will take power?

I agree. I think that the girls 20-15 years ago were genetic freaks and all the finalist were simply stunning (except maybe Olivia, though some people really like her). The contest looked to discover new fresh talent and some winners had almost no pageant training, the organization was prepared to train them if they had the beauty and potential. Recently, the winners are not as striking but hey, the girls in the magazines and on the catwalks aren't either- it's the era of instagram models, reality tv and accessible beauty, so that's okay too. It's more about training and performance now so some would argue it's better- you don't have to be a 180cm genetic freak to win!

I am Argentinian and I must clarify that latin americans miss world are not a representation of the rest of latin american woman. the rest dont look like them or are interest in vain beauty contests.

i think that educated and well connected women all around the world feel the same way as you... beauty pageants are unnecessary... but its the girls from poor and remote places see it as a way to change their situation. The Australian and Japanese winners, although they came from rich countries were from small towns and working class families. Without Miss Universe they would still be unknown. For girls from Botswana or Angola its a chance to live an absolute dream and have a platform to tell the world about their country. So yes beauty pageants are pointless for a medical student from Buenos Aires but they are an opportunity for a smart pretty girl from patagona who has no family connections or money to help her in life.

Yes, but she'd never get the chance to live in NYC and go on talkshows etc like the girld did back then. The current MissUniverse is all aboit social media but back then they had real opportunities. Actually Alicia Machada was also priveleged and didnt live a very saintly life in her 20s but my point is that maybe a boy in Venezuela or Cuba could use baseball or support to get out of poverty (rather than joining a gang) but for girls its porn or pageants. Most girls are not like Alicia and if she'd done anything before she was crowned she would have bee disqualified.

I did most of it while he was the presumptive candidate. Im also not American and the idea came because he'd just sold the framchaise after 15 years.
