Every time I watch TobyMac perform I always feel so bad, because he is up there and he is giving it his all to praise and have fun. His energy is unparalleled, and there's the audience, barely even clapping along

That is because he is performing at the GMA Dove Awards which is really an industry event. So many of the main floor attendees are other nominated artists but also big wigs at the record companies, media companies, artists agents and other self assigned important people who are really there not to see artists but to be seen themselves. Beyond them are members current and retired and that includes many from prior generations of gospel music who don't necessarily appreciate Toby's artwork but respect his faith. If you think it odd, it's actually normal. When the GMA started bringing in more rock acts in the early 80's it ruffled a lot of the "gospel quartet" crowd who weren't used to it.
