Pertti Karppinen going for his 3rd consecutive Olympic title up against his long term rival Peter-Michael Kolbe. In 1976 Kolbe led all the way until Karppinen (a relative unknown at the time) sprinted past him in the last 100m.
Karppinen and Kolbe had a long running rivalry between about 1976 and 1988
This was recorded from BBC coverage with Gerald Sinstadt commentating (he normally covered football). The house I was living in during the summer of 1984 had variable, but often pretty poor TV reception. Unfortunately the day of the mens finals was one of the poorer days for reception and then it's been on a VHS tape for 29 years before I reformatted it (hence the poor quality).
