    TERRENCE MALICK has always created thought-provoking, intensely visual and viscerally emotional films of our times, each one a distinct experience rife with mystery and depth. His new film, THE TREE OF LIFE, may be simultaneously his most intimate and epic work yet. A hymn to life, it excavates answers to the most haunting and personal human questions through a kaleidoscope of the intimate and the cosmic, from the raw emotions of a family in a small Texas town to the wildest, infinite edges of space and time, from a boy's loss of innocence to a man's transforming encounters with awe, wonder and transcendence.
    An impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's, the film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Academy Award® nominee* BRAD PITT). Jack (played as an adult by Academy Award® winner* SEAN PENN) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.

    It's an absolutely beautifully artistic movie. People who truly value films that make you think, films that aren't just car chases and gun battles, but films that bring you to another place and make you wonder, this is a film for them.

  • @lowbudgetboy12

    I think I finally understand the movie. "the two way's of life: grace and nature" Jessica Chastain personifies Grace (happiness, Beauty, caring), Brad Pitt personifies nature (tough, Brutal, angry). these two thing's are supposedly different from eachother. Sean Penn's character is the son of these two forces, and is conflicted and struggling with who is (nature or grace). these two forces are not bad, though, just different. I can't believe I just noticed that.

    for the people who got bored and think it's pretentious, I've to remind you that there two kinds of films-the ones to entertain you and the interpretive ones with more artistic plight. the first one gives you what you want--full of action, emotive dialogue, full of twist and turns when it comes to the plot etc. the 2nd one challenges you, dares you to solve its puzzle, the puzzle being a new way for the artist to convey a message, such puzzles are like that of Ulysses, Gravity's rainbow, the wasteland, howl, 8 and a half etc. now, i watched the whole film and i understood it and, i wasn't just entertained, i was taken beyond there! It's one of the most spiritual experiences i had, like an entire life review where all scenes of your life flashes before your eyes.

      Oh what a crock of shit. I enjoy slow movies (Lars Von Trier's melancholia comes to mind) and I'm all for creative and non linear storytelling, but this movie was just bad and uses the "artistic" cover as a defense against the non pretentious moviegoers.

    • @andrew5500
      @andrew5500 Před 9 lety +10

      Rami Mikati Explain why you thought it was bad. And don't just bark out that it was "pretentious" - it seems like everyone loves to throw that around whenever they can't explain WHY it was bad with solid reasons.

    • @SOEINEGAUDI
      @SOEINEGAUDI Před 9 lety +4

      i disagree. there are movies that are just simple entertainment, easy to watch and without a deeper meaning, and that there are movies on the opposite that are enigmatic and even hard to watch at times, but most movies are some where in between! look at chaplin or hitchcock, their movies are very entertaining and yet they ask difficult questions about the human condition ( or redefine what cinema as a visiul artform is capable of achieving )at the same time. in fact, i would even say that "tree of life" is even a good example of a movie inbetween the two extrema, because even if you "don't get it", it's by all means not discomfortable to watch. visually speaking, it's conventionally beautiful. sorry for my english.

    The whispered voiceovers aren't "asking existential questions," they're prayers spoken to God. The entire film is ostensibly a prayer, with the final scene being a vision of heaven in Sean Penn's character's eyes. Watch the film with that in mind and it'll make sense.

  • @SkylineOwnz
    @SkylineOwnz Před 10 lety +2

    This movie is quite simple and represents everything already burned into our brains, everything we are expected to do. People who love this movie just agree with the film and how the average human life is and has been for years. People who hate the movie say it brings nothing of importance to the table. Technically everyone is right about this film. It's really unnecessary, but it doesn't mean everyone is going to hate it, or love it.

    • @andrew5500
      @andrew5500 Před 10 lety +2

      The message it delivers does not solely judge whether the movie is good or not. It may have a simple meaning but the way it was executed is most definitely not simple. What a movie or any piece of art conveys isn't nearly as important as how it conveys it.

    Mothers are fragile and fathers want to build badass kids. That's how it is (or was back in the day). As a child, he and his brothers experience the shock wave of these two forces, but we don't see the consequences of this emotional contrast in his brothers because this ain't their story. Because little Penn spends more time with his mother or his brothers and friends, the strongly traditional nature of this father scare him instead of making him tough.

    Keep in mind that nature doesn't necessarily signify brutality and anger, but strength. In nature, the strong always survive. The animal that can run the fastest, complete for mating opportunities, and most effectively kill their pray are the ones that survive long enough to reproduce. Grace, in this instance, represents the transcendent side of life: art, religion, love, and anything that doesn't rely on the stark reality of nature. Nature = philosophical materialism, grace = spirituality

  • @LightWthoutTheStatic
    @LightWthoutTheStatic Před 11 lety

    I would largely agree with that, but it's interesting to me that the father ultimately fails in what he originally was doing and he comes back to God (shown in some shots in the film in the church and His softening as he grows older). The mother has no such change in character, but instead stays the same. When I've watched it I saw the way of grace really prevail, and doing so gently and naturally.

    I definitely want to see the film that someone calls the worst film ever...I hated it! That is the film I immediately want to go see. Wow! They vehemently hated it...and that strikes my curiosity why, why did they hate it so much. And I don't want to see the film that most people say "oh, it was alright, it was pretty good, I enjoyed it." Have no desire to see a film that was catatonically stated as being "alright". I want to see passion-filled response films...like..."I absolutely without a doubt loved that film...LOVED that flick" or "That movie sucked, in fact it sucked donkey dicks...I even left the theatre before it ended, it sucked so much." Those kind of responses spark a light inside of me leading me into thinking...I really got to see that film, it is garnering up some trepidatious feelings about it. That's just me, but it usually paves a right response when selecting a film to watch.

      Maybe that those people don't think like the majority of people did back in the culture of that time? He could've worded it better.

      The discrepancy I have with the culture at that time is with the people portrayed in the movie, because the people of that time are contributing to the; hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil, status quo. I predict the director of the film is only concern with the psyche analysis; in other words, the relationship of the father with his son, and the impact that relationship is to the development of psychosocial cognition.

    I don't think inevitable is the word you're looking for...
    That does not make much sense in your context.

    I'll watch it again, but it was nothing new or a revelation for mankind to throw away their material goods and follow the Messiah into a promised state of love...No didn't do it for me. I watched the 2001 Space Odessy as a 7 yr old and hated it didn't get it and feel the same way in my 50's...today and have watched the film many times.since...This movie left me feeling the same way..
