I am shocked that we are where we are in the US today. The current events of 2021 are so shameful. What have we done?

Sit on your hands and only talk about how things are wrong rather than doing anything about it while expecting 'someone else' to do it for you once you say "we" - there is no "we"...Hey, you asked. No, I'm not better than you.

You know, the "free speech" I've heard so much about in America has always been in terms of "How DARE you criticize me for saying that!" "How DARE you give me consequences for espousing this belief!" when in actuality the benefit of free speech in a nation is seen when its citizens take on the responsibility of speaking truth to falsehood.

Agreed, and the right wing HATES the second part.

Enforcing consequence for espousing a belief is an injustice.

I think the problem is that we develop our expressive language skills throughout our youth, a time where our free speech is unchecked by the diverse cultural and ethical perspectives of the real world. Conflict is inevitable when the models we provide for our youth to train offer nothing but a mirror and encouragement. In a perfect world, free speech should be unchecked. In the unequal, non-diverse world we live in... we need a way to ensure those who endanger us with words are fully aware of the consequences to both themselves and common society.

My guess is you didn't get to the part where Hitchens asked (paraphrasing) "And to whom would you delegate the responsibility to determine, in advance, absent your individual consent, what you are able to hear and not hear? To what specific person, in all of Canada, would you give this responsibility? What actual person would you have faith in to execute this task honestly?"

The funniest thing about right-wing sources referencing classic videos like this is that they understand only just enough of Hitchens to believe his positions actually bolster theirs.

lol, Christopher Hitchens was the biggest apologist for marxism and the fact you use him makes me question your motives
