      Yea and when redlining, ageism, and sexism were still perfectly OK. The Brady’s once in a blue had a black friend almost always female who barely spoke, and never had a black neighbor. The episode where the neighbors adopt one white boy and then go back to the orphanage for his friends “one negro and one oriental” those sure were the days don’t you hate it that being a white male isn’t special anymore? As a white male I been able to live with it, but I imagine some still yearn for them days when women and “the coloreds” knew their place on the fringes of society doing menial jobs even if they had a master’s degree

      @@cavanpatrick6343to be fair, though, the Bradys lived in a white neighborhood. They weren’t discriminating, there just wouldn’t be a lot of blacks at the kids’ schools at that time.
      Sometimes I think that now when gay and biracial couples have to be in almost all commercials & stuff that it’s almost exploitation. It doesn’t feel genuine. Oddly, I think racism seemed lesser in the seventies and the overcompensation now seems disingenuous.

    • @cavanpatrick6343
      @cavanpatrick6343 Před měsícem

      It’s odd how much you sound like my mother, so she specifically says too many black people are shown on commercials. But I don’t think it matters tbh maybe it is disingenuous but…in the 70’s there was still redlining restrictive covenants and the LAPD was compromised almost entirely of white men who either migrated from the Jim Crow southern states as children or their parents had come from those states. These conditions were a main cause of the 1965 Watts Riots and again in the 1992 riots. Despite finally getting a black mayor, LA continued to be an incredibly racist city. Municipal services to minority areas were significantly reduced ie garbage collection might happen once a month. White areas had sweeper trucks passing almost daily. This way people could look at a black neighbor such as south central LA at the time and say “look how they don’t take care of where they live, trash everywhere, these people are animals” well that’s easy to say when your tax dollars provide you with next to nothing.
      Albeit I was not born until the 1980’s I got a masters in sociology, and one of the most eye opening is “OJ Made in America” as it gives insight in to the racial dynamics of the era although centered at OJ, he got excited when a lady said “look there’s OJ Simpson at the table with all the n-words” because he felt that he was “OJ” it didn’t matter about the racist epithet he was thrilled she recognized him as OJ. Also my great grandmother lived on Vienna Street in SanFran from about 1948 to 1979, as a child she would tell me stories of how black and brown people were treated absolutely terribly by so many people and she just wasn’t ok with it, she had similar experience because her maiden name was O’Brien and married name was McGovern and prospective employers would ask how often she drank (she didn’t at all) but she would tell me the anti-Irish attitudes were NOTHING by comparison to how people of color were treated in public. She told me no one could tell she was Irish when they saw her but you couldn’t hide it if your skin was a different color. I specifically remember her telling me “the amount of melanin in someone’s skins means absolutely nothing at all aside from whether or not you need a strong sunscreen lotion”.
      So after rambling yes maybe today overcompensating but at the same time no one can truly say “the 19XX’s were a better time” because every generation has an inherent fault or issue that may not even be evident for another generation. Also in the 1970’s it had only been a few years since Loving v Virginia was decided by the SCOTUS and prior to that most southern states made it a crime to engage in any sort of relationship with a person of a different color under the name of “Racial Integrity Act” and imagine that they were first arrested for being married to each other in 1959, the Supreme Court of Virginia even ruled against them saying “it applies to all people”. It took 8 years for their vindication, but can you imagine today? nobody would tolerate that sort of attitude nobody even people who believe same sex couples shouldn’t be given the same benefits as any other couple who wishes to be legally married to one another. Each decade we get sentimental for, had good but there’s always bad. Not to mention the economic situation was not great in this country especially after 1973, not only did the price of gas skyrocket but you could only buy gas on certain days of the week. Mary Tyler Moore show opening sequence where she rolls her eyes and throws meat in to her shopping cart was a direct nod to the inflation of consumer prices.

      Oh also “terrorism” this was the so called golden age of hijacking if I’m not mistaken. While I was not alive yet, no airport had metal detectors and you could just take a gun on board. Dawson’s field was 1970 and from about 1965-74 there were multiple hijackings to Cuba in the USA. My mother is from Ireland and her first husband was American (as was her second) they travelled often as they were Us Military and being alone with my siblings was a big stressor for her because her children had American passports, she had a UK passport being from Northern Ireland. It frightened her because she knew Americans were often singled out in hijackings and was afraid should it happen to her that my siblings passports could cause trouble. This was also just before the 1973 oil embargo by opec which created a chain reaction of inflation bad economic times from which no nation recovered until the mid 1980’s
      I too am nostalgic for “simpler times” like the 80’s and 90’s but even then my grandmother told me “people always say that 20 years prior were better times” she told me how her parents thought big band swing music “wasn’t music” and “was too loud” and in the early 1940’s they complained everyone was in a hurry and has to have a car….my grandma was wise beyond her years but was great at giving me perspective. No time in the past was as wonderful as one tends to believe
