This guy's head is shiny as the shoe he shines. Epic!
The internet never ceases to insult another person.
Great thorough compilation! I’ve never seen the rubber “toe tap” - novel idea.
Hey, Robert!
First time I’ve seen it as well! I run into so many interesting things when I see other’s shoes! Take care!
As always a very interesting video. Here in the UK I remember back in the 1950's/60's workmen often had metal plates on their boots. They were called SEGS and you could buy a selection of sizes and shapes on a card from Woolworths for very little money and hammer them on yourself, especially if you had an old Cobbler's Last. You could also buy HOB NAILS to hammer into the soles (Hob Nailed Boots) very popular with coal miners. Showing my age!
That’s awesome! Thanks for for sharing. Personal Stories like that are invaluable and great to hear. I’ll see you on the next video.
The first time I went to UK was in 1974, I was 17; at the time the most common shoes among boys were cowboy boots with tapered heels that wore too fast. So I did as many British guys did, and had a local cobbler add metal plates to my boots' heels. It was very common to hear the loud clicking when walking in the streets, and slipping was very common too.
Oops, didn't realize I was replying to a comment. I also love hearing about how folks cared for their garments in the past, including shoes and boots!
Thanks for the video. A few comments:
1) My shoemaker dips the screws into resin before screwing them into. That way you don't have water going in, he says. Did your guys also do it or is that not a necessity?
2) premature wear at the tip can also be fixed by a cobbler by only replacing the tip w/ a new leather part. You'd keep the bulk of your original sole (since it still has wear) and only add a small piece of new leather to the tip.
3) sole protectors don't need to add to your sole. My shoemaker sanded down the original sole ever so slightly (w/o going into the stitching) and then glued the rubber on. It sits flush with the waist of the sole. This combined w/ a toeplate is the ultimate protection.
Just when I thought you had already shown us how to make our shoes look perfect with your mirror shines, you raise the bar even further! Now I have to start looking for a cobbler in my neighborhood. Well done sir!!
Thanks! I appreciate it! Gotta make those shoes shine!
I started down this rabbit hole an hour ago. I didnt know how poor I was until I learned of shoe accesories. Smh..... I can never say a thing to my old lady about shoes again. Lol
Enjoyed your video! I have the “toe wear” problem on many of my shoes and talked with my local cobbler who installed very thin, but very durable sole savers on a new pair of Fifth Avenue AEs for me. I’m impressed with the shoe’s stability (especially on wet floors). More importantly, it’s now heaven driving my manual 6-speed transmission car in dress shoes-life is good!
His head is as polished as the shoes. I will listen to this man.
I love this channel it's so relaxing and I never realised how much work goes into shoe making etc. I have DM boots that really need worked on....I will use your videos for guidance
I go for Sole Guards because they are the most practical for me. I live in a tropical country. Despite the dress shoes meant for office and events whereby I'm indoors most of the time, can't escape the wet pavements. I've started to favour dress shoes that come with Dainite soles too, for this reason of being more practical.
In France we use to had both metal plate and sole guard to leather soles (we call this “fer et patin”). It really protect the sole and it is confortable !
OUTSTANDING !!! Thank You Perston
I didn’t know how much went into toe plates! Thanks for the info! Now I need to do the same for my small collection. Another great video, Preston!
That boot is INCREDIBLE and a toe plate really adds to the sharpness of the shoe. Love this video
HI, PRESTON! I Love Love Love those Chili cordovan boots, DAMN, those are pretty!!! 🎩
Hey, Angela! I agree haha. Thanks for watching! Glad to added me on Facebook!
You know what Preston I've got to say shining shoes is very therapeutic it helps with my mental wellbeing. Thanks for the tips👌👍
I live in a country where rain or snow is a usual thing, so I prefer Dainite rubber sole.
I’ve noticed that the toes of my Dainite soles don’t wear away at all.
Dainite soles are the best!
@@marksshoereviews6028 Yeah the difference between the two is like dainite.
Sorrynotsorry
HipposHateWater 😂
Your set pf shoes are awsome, can't imagine not having time enough to thoroghly enjoy all the high quality shoes we come across and aquire in all our lives. Godbless you and your family, and thankyou for sharing and teaching us all of how to care for our beloved shoes! 👍✝️🛐❤️🙏☺️
Didn’t know anything about shoes until I started watching your videos! Excellent content I’ve transformed every pair of shoes I own thanks to you! Keep doing what you’re doing
Fan from Ireland 🇮🇪
Tim's looks like they do a very good job! I recently had a sole guard installed and I was very disappointed with the work!!!! at a place by the name of John's in SD, NOT recommended! he ground the edges of my new shoes and sloped the sides with a different color die! I cried when I left the shop!
Much needed info. Thanks Preston.
I like those metal toe plates as well. Gives some sense of hard rock beside their main duty.
I realy love the toe plates, not only functional but they complement the shoe in the visual department also. another great video.
The metal toe plates are SUPER classy! Love them.
Thanks!
I can't believe how well you do a mirror shine. Just boss.
Love your content and those brown boots are beautiful!! 🙂
Hey, Krista! Thanks for watching! Love those boots too!
Honestly, I think cobblers are my favorite craftsmen. They take a well loved shoe and extends the life of a comfortable friend. And they are usually such humble folks. Thanks for sharing about toe tips. They are also good on ladies' boots.
Thanks! I do agree! Tim and John are salt of the earth. So kind and humble and definitely skilled. Thank you for watching
I love the metal guards. I look forward to putting them on every pair of my allen edmonds shoe collection.
Hey, Leland!
Thanks for watching! I’m glad the video was helpful.
Really interesting video. I've had steel tips on my heels for years but never on the toes.Might think again now though, thank you for the info....
My Man Preston! Gorgeous shoes and Thank for the Channel! Bravo!
Hey, Martin! Thanks for watching man! Take care and I’ll see you video.
Hi Preston I can attest to slipping when your shoes are healed I recently unintentionally did the splits tearing a hamstring in the process my wife and grandson were present had I been alone I think I would have cried the pain was so bad, loving the videos keep em coming and stay safe in the current climate. Regards Bob
Hey, Bob!
Oh no! I’m glad you’re ok. A nasty fall can really ruin a person week! Glad you’re ok. Thanks for watching and I hope to hear from you again next video.
Thank you so much!
I am going to search if you made videos for belts as well...
You are great, man!
God bless you and your familly!
I like thin Vibram sole guards on my shoes. I mainly wear Santoni and Ferragamo but after watching your videos I purchased a new pair of AE to experiment with. Your videos are concise and inspired me to experiment for fun! Thank You, your work is amazing.
Hey, Chris! Thanks for watching! Glad you watched and liked it!
Eh man. I love watching These videos, the right shoes care and the Appreciation for shoe wear. Keep on doing man🇨🇦👍
Hey, Jon! I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
Love the shoes.
Salute and much success
Great stuff. I really like your shoes.!
Sole guards always worked for me,i like stepping quietly 😁
Love the toe plates, Gorgeous shoes and boots, Thank you for the vid :)
Hey, Frank! My pleasure. Thank you for watching
Gold shoe plates look amazing x
Hey, Darren!
I agree! Thanks for watching and I’ll see you next video!
Never seen metal toeplates before, but they look classy as hell!
I really like that looks of metal toe plate. It adds elegant look for the entire shoe.
They do look cool huh? It’s one of my favorite things about them.
Shoe with dainite sole looks great
Another awesome video and thanks for providing the insight! I hadn’t thought of this but will see if I can find a cobbler that can do this for my shoes. Cheers!
Thanks for this lesson
I need a good cobbler to install high end soles and heels. I love the v cleats to my Florsheim imperial’s. Front taps. Love that sound. In military school that was the greatest sound to hear
Hey Preston I really enjoy the material you produce brother. I recently purchase used Allen edmond Stowe and strands
Loving the rubber toe taps..had to catch up Preston with your vlogs..
I really enjoy your video’s , they are very very informative and interesting , being in the Chicago area I’ve not found a cobbler who will add toe plates , haven’t given up so who knows
Thanx
Mick O’Sullivan
Preston, I love those strands !!!
Hey, Amit!
Thanks for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed the shoes! See you next time!
Excellent excellent Preston👌🏼 I’ve got to to say I personally think the best option would be getting JR soles (Double) then put a nice Magna Sole Protector and heel guard or get the Dainite Soles and just add a heel guard too. Best way to preserve any shoe, I did this on my prior Ferragamos and made them last 16 years with me wearing them everyday. The click clack of a leather sole is nice, but a quality shoe is an investment. 🤝
That's what I'm thinking of doing. With your sole protector and heel guards, how long did it last before you resoled them or put in new heel guards?
Great video Preston, have you a on polishing golf shoes
Love your videos. Thank you.
Hey, Al! Thanks for watching
Toe plates are a small investment on taking care of your shoes. Good to see you go out visit your local cobblery. Thanks Preston.
Got a pair of Guidomaggi monk strap shoes. Definitely gonna take them to get metal toe plates installed. Refine the look of them!
As always Preston, superb video with informative explanation. I have the dalton cordovan boot from AE, from experience the heel is a bit slippery that I took a fall going down the stairs into my basement. Luckily I was able to break my fall by holding on to my railing, but landed a bit awkward. Right then and there I thought about what you stated in the past “suicide heel”. Thank you again brother, I get my taps from Trenton & Heath. Hope all is well and thank you for your videos.
Hey, Seeking Truth!
Be careful our there! I hate taking falls! Trenton & Heath do great work!
Always 👇
Great information 👏
👉 You The Man 💪
THANKS 👌
PEACE ✌️
Surely I would break a sweat if I was to make those plates, woo 😓
A nice job indeed, thanks for the video buddy 👌🏼
Cheers from Denmark 😊🇩🇰👍🏼
great video, I always send my shoes to B. Nelson in NYC and have toe plates and sole guards put on. I notice no wear on my shoes, even after over a year of use, really worth the $
That’s awesome! Sounds like quality work right there!
I love the look of the brass tips. It adds a really subtle pop and kinda looks gangster (hidden knife? 😁)
Love the explanations and love your shoe collection!!!
I personally prefer the metal toe plates. They work even better on shoes with chiseled toe design, as the toe area of the sole drags more against the pavement. I had lulu tips put on after a resole done by Trenton&Heath and another ones on Magnanni resole where I had Steve Douduklian remove all rubber soles and put on JRs. I’d do it on any resole going forward. I don’t personally like the sole savers, as the leather sole allows better breathability of the shoe while wearing in dry warm weather. Great video!
This is all completely in your head and a total fantasy. Your shoe is not “breathing” through its sole. Putting a sole saver on will not have any effect on the internal shoe environment of the shoe.
regarding the sole guards you showed, i have vibram sole guards on several pairs of shoes i own. they're different from the ones you showed because they're vibram soles, and barely add any height to the shoes. also, the cobbler did a good job of sanding down enough of the entire sole area where the sole guard fits into to just to ensure that there's no extra height formation
Awesome options.....
Thanks, Christopher.
Very nice idea
Thanks for watching
I prefer the metal toe plates the most. When it's time to resole some of my AEs, it'll be on my list.
So excited to get into Allen Edmonds. I’m going to resole the dalton in dark chili in some red or black dainite soles. Got the saphir products in the mail for the uppers. Where are the meet ups? I’m in Orange County. I’ve collected boots for 1 whole year now, but about 80% work boots. Now I’m getting into dress boots and shoes.
If you have any pull at Allen Edmonds, please get them to re-release the 5th Street boot. I have been wanting a pair for awhile!
Hey, Aaron! I’m trying as we speak!. I want this boot back so badly. Thanks for watching
@@TheElegantOxford Hey, Preston! That would be so awesome if you convinced Allen Edmonds to bring them back! Fingers crossed. Tell them I'll gladly take one each in dark brown, dark chili, and oxblood. :)
Are you a member of the Allen Edmonds Enthusiasts group on Facebook? We might get a special group order and we’re considering the Fifth Street.
@@TheElegantOxford I wasn't aware of the Facebook group. I will go look for it. Thanks for the heads up!
@@TheElegantOxford I m in if you can as they so look great and I am not a boot guy.
It would b nice if do a video of your shoe collection! All three pairs are super nice👍🏽
Those boots are tha shiznit, cant decide which one is better!
I have been religiously putting on TOPYS on all my shoes for about 11 years and could not be more happier. I would highly highly recommend anyone to put those on. Also, I have two pairs of boots with Dainite soles and Man they are super awesome and hard wearing. I think TOPYS are essential to any one who wishes to take care of their expensive shoes and wishes for them to last a long time
Awesome
I live in Minnesota I would prefer the dainite soles
They look cool and serve a good purpose. However, it seems more of a luxury item to have on your shoes. Very well done video sir. Cheers.
Love it !!!! What products do you use ?
Custom soles and especially toe plates really add some class to nice shoes.
Hey, John! I agree for sure! Looks so cool and elegant
Can u do a video on what dress shoes is good for people in high school still that's not so costly but just right
Those are amazing, they look wonderful. I'm new to the channel, so glad I found it. Have you ever reviewed Beckett Simonon, I heard about their shoes, and were wondering if they were worth the money.
Hey, bwknighy76,
I’m working on a video now! Thanks for watching!
I think I'll try the metal toe plates. I go back and forth between that and the sole savers because I like the look of the leather soles. Seems trivial but hey, I like the look.
Hey, Ixlilton!
Looks are important. I love for plates mainly because they look so cool! I totally understand
LOVE this tip....especially when I saw the (lack of) view from the front, they are invisible! Now, the best way to show appreciation for your die-hard fans is to share your Fifth Avenues ;) (those are the BEST, you deserve 'em... peace/health to your family!)
Hey, dogbark100!
Aren’t they cool? Thanks for watching and take care
Hey Preston, you should try your hand at installing them!
I purchased a box of 10 triumph toe plates for around $50 shipped from leather&grindery in the UK. I've installed them on about 5 pairs already and they look pretty good if I don't say so myself.
I’m definitely going to try at some point! I though I could do it myself if I really tried! Thanks for watching
Preston, triumph is what is written on the toe plate, but my shoe repairer said the actual name is (Boulevard) now very popular and i have started inserting it on the toe of my shoes. Here in the (UK) to have it inserted on toe of pair of shoes is (£25) but they actually look very elegant on shoes.
I did not know that! Makes sense! I’m going to try to insert them myself in the future.
First of all, thanks for introducing me to good shoe care and Saphir products! I’m still confused by Renovateur versus Remat. Is one gentler than the other? I’m trying to figure out what to do for those in between cleanings.
Hey, John!
Renovator is a cleaner and conditioner while Renomat is a polish and wax remover and stripper. Use renomat only when you want to start over.
I’m here to help if I can.
You introduced me to French tips as well as Allen Edmonds, I’ve worn Stacy Adams my whole life with a Kenneth Cole here and there but that’s about it. When I was a teen over forty years ago, I used to use metal taps on heel and toe but they where definitely slippery but we enjoyed the sound of them clacking and scraping when we walked. I have been for the last thirty years using sole savers but they are unattractive and I add the cheap nail on taps to the toe as well to help them last but they are ugly underneath. I do like the French tips and wonder if the brass nails in the heels are for looks or add a little life to the heels
Hi Preston,
wondering what your opinion is on plastic or rubber, nail on heel guards? Also, do you prefer toe plates or sole savers more?
I love those Triumph toe plates. The only shoe cobbler in New York that offers JR resoles and toe plate service is Columbus Park Shoe Service. I have yet to check him out but will after this pandemic stops.
Hey, Toro!
Thanks for watching! Yeah definitely check them out when this is all over.
I added rubber half soles (Topys) as well as metal toe plates on all of my dress shoes (some lulu, some Triumh). I also added vibram top lifts on my heels. Since doing this, my shoes hsve lasted a long time.
Did you do it yourself or cobbler?
Muy hermoso y elegante 👍
I want to get a lot of monk straps. Not sure if I want single or double monk straps, but I will definitely want all leather soles, I really would like a fiddleback waist, and brass toe plates.
Brings back basic training flashbacks where MTI's had metal tips on the heel of their boots so you'd hear every step of their marching.
Those are not happy memories 😆
I know EXACTLY what ya mean!! If we need to start a support group, I'm right there with ya buddy.
Basic Training Survivors. LOL!!
I may have to move to protect my toes, now! I wondered about the Dainite soles, of which I have a few. It makes you really respect how little worn some of the shoes on Ebay are. I check those spots very carefully before buying used.
Absolutely. It’s great that you are so careful. Thanks for watching.
Hello, I learned from you how to polish shoes. This time I'm back for the brass shoe plates. I've read somewhere that the triumph shoe plates were made of brass back in the days while now they're just brass coated so after a few days the brass will just go away. Can you confirm? If so I'm going to have em made from a blacksmith. Thank you and keep up with the great videos!
Thanks the video cleared up a lot of questions I had about the toe plates and it they can scratch floors and how much they effect walking. Do the leather bottoms not scratch as much with the toe plates or is just less wear on the tips of the sole? Also, is there something to put on the heals is it just a matter of keeping an eye on the rubber and have it replaced when needed?
Great video! Question, what's the b
est option for a heal guard! For Alden Indies, and long wing blouchers?
Thanks!
Omg......those shoes!
Nice informative video.
I would find it difficult to consider toe plates when a Dainite Sole can protect against wear (on all shoe areas) and increase durability in the same step 😎. It seems leather soles would take more wear in a shorter time scale in comparison to rubber soles. Plus, a shoe can be resoled from leather to Dainite.
Once again, your videos are very relaxing, please keep uploading!!
I love dainite myself. It’s hard to beat!
I prefer how the Vibram toe guards look in comparison to the metal ones. Im guessing they wear much faster but atleast provide more grip and therefore more confidence with each step.
Soo nice shell boots you have! How would you compare nails vs metal toe plates in terms of protecting toe from premature wear?
The Nike Killshot 2 featured in this video! Can you also teach us how to restore those :) :) It has a leather and suede combo upper.
A lot of people are using iPad screen protectors to cover the bottoms of their Christian louboutin red bottoms and it works so well. The entire bottoms look perfect after many many uses. And it helps with grip because of the rubbery/plastic of the screen protector. Obviously it’s to keep the red from scraping off. But I noticed it Keeps the flat bottoms nice. Maybe it would work for you.
Hi Preston,
I love your video as always.
For my shoes I made it myself with these "Triumph Boulevard Plates 150", which were very hard to find in Germany altough they are a German product. I really love them and in my personal opinion they are the best on the market. What I would like to know is, if you prefer the 3 mm or the 1,5 mm ones?
Hey, Ulrich! I’m not sure which plates I got but both seem to be fine. Thanks for watching.
Preston ! I think we all are waiting for a personal shoe collection of yours !
👇🏻
Coming soon haha. I keep forgetting!
I have two pair of AEs with Dainite soles and they give a great grip in dry weather but if the pavement, cement or floor is the slightest bit wet they are as slick as mucosa on a doorknob. Do you know anyway, other than replacing them, to make them not so slippery on wet surfaces? Love your videos.
