    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Bob (Matt Dillon) and his crew rob a pharmacy.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
The operative word in Drugstore Cowboy is "drug". Matt Dillon plays the leader of a group of dopeheads who wander around the country robbing pharmacies to feed their habits. Dillon's chums include doltish James Le Gros and teen-age junkie Heather Graham; also along for the ride is Dillon's wife Kelly Lynch. Their nemesis is cop James Remar, whom Dillon takes perverse delight in humiliating. When one of the young addicts dies of an overdose, it promps Dillon to try to go straight, a task complicated by wife Lynch's determination to stay high and by the corrupting presence of an ex-priest, played by Naked Lunch author William Burroughs. Drugstore Cowboy was director Gus Van Sant's breakthrough picture.

I think that would merit no more than a good slapping-around and a ban, right? Because in my dark junkie days I would've tried that shit if I thought I'd stand a reasonable chance of getting away with it. Opiate addiction makes you harbor some crazy ass thoughts.

Yep. It was based on an autobiographical novel by James Fogle, who spent many years addicted to opiates and stealing to support his habit. He was in prison when the film released in 1989 and sadly struggled with addiction for the rest of his life, going in and out of prison for various drug and robbery charges before passing away from Mesothelioma in 2012.

It's been a long time since I've seen this film but I already know he definitely switched out the stool softener with something better - just knowing that having dealt with addicts. Also some interesting details on the props: the books are vintage in cover but they definitely scooped them up from a thrift store as they are super decayed and yellowed with age and not in any new condition.

@jonathanbirch2022 I've never tried it. I think they were implying that he picked some bottles that were of no narcotic value. When you are taking that kind of risk, you don't mess around with non-narcotic pills on purpose. That part where he pops the top off was just for cinematic effect so we could see the pills.

I don't think the movie uses actual opiates as examples that I'm aware of. I've been given dilaudid for pain in the ER and it was clear liquid. If you google search Dilaudid most the pills look like any other pills, just a solid white, yellow, or orange-ish color. The pill capsule used in the movie was probably an over-the-counter antihistamine or something like that. If you use an online pill identifier it comes up with a few possibilities including Phentermine which is a type of amphetamine for weight loss.
