Excellent fix. I had a Honda GX160 that a customer said would quit. I bench tested it for 20 minutes and ran good. Sent it back and customer said won't start again. Turned out it was the coil that would only act up on occasion. Thanks for the video.

Had this same problem with that same engine in a club car. The only difference is when i had my echo spark tester in line it ran perfectly. When you did not have it in line it did the same as yours. Ended up being a bad module. Not as easy to get out in a golf cart as a gater

I should’ve mentioned it looses spark
      When the engine is hot

Just had a similar problem with a Honda generator. Replaced the coil and carb, now she's running great!

    Thank you for the video!
My Club Car with FE350 engine is doing almost the same thing but doing it cold. In service mode, it will start and run at idle, but as soon as you give it some gas, it stalls. After a couple of tries, I could smell gas. Checked compression 140 psi (good). I then disconnected the rev limiter, and installed a spark tester. Spark (orange color) was continual even when I went above idle and engine stalls. I then changed plug and went through the carb, no change. Thinking it was still the carburetor, I bought an aftermarket replacement on Amazon . Still only run at idle. I then thought since the spark was orange and not blue colored (as I expected to see), maybe coil is week and the added gas on acceleration is drowning it out. I am know waiting for the Amazon aftermarket coil and feeling better that is what the problem is. After seeing this video I am more confident I have made the correct diagnosis for fix. Cross your fingers!
If anyone has any other suggestions, I am all ears. Thanks!

Having the same issue with my gator cx . Been working on 4 stroke engines all my life, and I just knew it was a fuel issue. I tore the carburetor apart three times, change the gas, bypassed the fuel pump and it was no change. I installed my spark tester. The spark was almost red . . Now I thinking it's gotta be a bad low oil shut off switch.

Finally figured it out. Governor was out of adjustment. Governor is not in the engine, it is in transmission. When accelerator at full full throttle, carb throttle wasn't moving therefore no gas. When I adjusted governor arm, it made arm at carb move a little more than it had been. That made the butterfly open a little more which made it run like it should. Be careful adjusting the governor arm. A little change makes RPM's drastically change.

This just might be the fix for me! I’ve let the POS sit now for 5 years. Time to buy a coil I think

Great info. Does that FE 290 have an external or internal igniter, I have a 550 Mule with an obviously replaced coil but for the life of me can't find an external igniter anywhere. I have spark but i cant get the sucker to fire at all. Waiting on a new plug to see if its bad.

HELP: Have JD Gator 4 x 2 (2004ish??) with a possible charging issue. Replaced battery and voltage regulator. What would your next steps be? How can I verify it's NOT the alternator? And...where is it even at?

  • @rolandthethompsongunner64

I have no power to my starter switch but can jump it at the starter and it turns over. What is preventing voltage from getting to my ignition switch? I can’t find any relays and fuses are good.

I enjoyed the video. Just for curiosity, did you find that screw that vibrated off the belt guard when you rev it up ? 🤔 😆

    • @THEMOWERMEDIC1
      @THEMOWERMEDIC1  Před 3 lety +1

Yeah it didn’t go to anything I had it shoved down in the spark plug cap to see if I could see spark. I was trying everything because I had left my inline spark tester at the main shop.

Hey buddy I’m trying to change the coil in my John Deere gator but I’m having problems getting to the bolts on the bottom of the fan shroud. Any idea how many bolts there are that I need to take off and where they are located ? And what did you use to get to that one on the bottom on the right hand side ?? I have tried every extension and everything I have and I can’t get that damn bolt out

I have a Kawasaki Mule with this same engine. When I've been driving it a while under load, good and hot, it tends to die at idle. I replaced the carb, but it still does it. It's only got about 250 hours on it, but it is more than 20 years old. Could it be the coil?

  • @Nobody487_

Have a 98 gator FE290d rebuild engine and reinstalled and hooked up started engine ran fine switched off and noticed smoke and electric burn smell looked like maybe around fly wheel area had to take battery cable off to stop burning. After that could not get a spark so got to looking found what I think is ground wire to coil not grounded .Could I possibly burned coil up.

Hi I have a Kawasaki fe 290 or 350 in a 94 clubcar carryall 2 with no spark. I took the old coil out to replace it but in the process of trying to get the sparkplug connector/ resister off the wire the resister plastic broke into many pieces .is it possible to get a new resister/ sparkplug connector and boot. Also I did a ohm test on the old coil and it seems to be within specs. So I put it back on but still no spark. Does the dead man wire need to be on to test for spark. Thanks for any help or advice. Jeff
