- I apply one layer of 4 ounce fiberglass cloth on the outside of the deck and hull. The cloth is wet out with epoxy resin.
This is from a series of videos showing the steps of building a wooden kayak using the "strip-planked" or "strip-built" method. This particular boat is a high performance sea kayak design called the Petrel by Guillemot Kayaks. More information about the boat is available at www.guillemot-kayaks.com . Further information about the building techniques shown in these videos is available in the book "Building Strip-Planked Boats": building-strip-planked-boats.com/ For more videos in this series please visit: www.guillemot-kayaks.com/guill...
I realize I'm way late to the party, but a question: I always thought kayaks had to laid up INSIDE of a mold. But you're in effect doing the opposite. Why couldn't you just carve a kayak out of Styrofoam, lay the fiberglass over it, and then use some sort of solvent to dissolve the Styrofoam?
The bubbles should rise to the surface and pop, leaving the resin transparent. When using the grunge cup to collect excess resin, don't use any of the highly aerated resin from the cup on the boat.
Love the idea of using spot gluing and accelerant...way easier than using epoxy and waiting...and waiting...good time saver
I like the ...cutting the cup trick.
Nice work!👍👍
Did you stain these before glassing them? If so, does commercial stain that both colors and seals the wood interfere with glassing? I'm considering building my own boat and want a bright colored boat that still shows the wood grain so I'm looking at staining it.
been better w/some 38 special music
During your life, were there times for your kayaks to break on the rocks?
@toolguy46 I'm using rubber squeegee that is available from some fiberglassing sources. I also use the plastic squeegees that you can get for autobody work.
6 ounce cloth is suitable for larger boats, tandem kayaks, and kayaks that will used very hard. 4 ounce ends up being very strong, but I double up on the bottom. Use 6 where you just want more strength
Soooooo gorgeous !!!!
Excelente metodológica de construcción un fuerte abrazo por su espontaneidad .
Хорошая работа. Мастер своего дела.
@deepbluewaterful I am wearing an organic vapor filter on my respirator. While epoxy does not produce much vapor, it probably is not a good idea to breath the vapor it does produce. The filter does a good job.
Excelente trabajo
Very good video showing proper technique! I'm curious-is the squegee a commercially made one, or something home made-looks like it has some thickness to it, but tapers at the edge. Also, when would one use the 6oz. cloth that is also available for this application?
Love your work, and have been following the series. What is the name of the second piece of music in this vid?
Nick, that is yet another gorgeous boat. If you could please, tell me the name of the second song you used in this video.. Thanks.
Is that protective filters useful for the epoxy vapor?
@abusingelves The second tune is Donal og by Noirin Ni Rianin
what is the name of the music please? Is it lebanese or turkish?
