    Nice! I did the Tokyo AD tour too hitting the same ones as you did before I left Japan. Noticed that you didn't go to the one in Roppongi & Shibuya. I bought my DJ41 from the Mitsukoshi Mae store. Disappointed to hear about the new rule esp now that I've moved out of Japan. W.R.T. developing a relationship with the some of the sales reps, I found the Lexia Rolex in Ginza Six, Mitsukoshi Mae, and the Roppongi ones to be easier.
    Also glad to see a Grand Seiko on your wrist finally :D. I do love them and used walk into the one in Ginza often as they had their limited store versions. However, still just can't get myself to picking up a GS yet...maybe after owning a few other Rolexes, then maybe. I find the gritty winding of the Spring Drives though a little bit of a turn off.

    Enjoyed the video and seeing some of the shops I visited while in Tokyo. Pretty interesting regarding the rules to not sell to non-domestic buyers and the limitations on sales (i.e., waiting 1 year) before you could buy another watch). In effect they are selectively rationing and setting up criteria for purchase certain high demand Rolex professional models. I wonder if this practice will find its way to other countries in Asia.

    Great vid and info! I guess if I go to Japan next year I can skip Rolex! It was the same thing in Italy this past summer, I had the feeling they had the Sub I was asking for in the back but wouldn't sell it to a tourist. It wasn't with all the models, just the really hard to get ones but not the explorer's, yacht master, those were around in the less busy small town stores. It is all done via call these days (in NY anyway) and they decide who to sell the watch to. It is a waste of time to just going into AD's hoping to get lucky. It will be nice when things get back to normal!

    Sad to see Rolex Japan’s policy on holding hot models for locals. You recommend a local friend coming with me when I go around the Rolex stores?
    Also cool if you could talk about the exchange rates in Japan and if it’s worth it buying there as opposed to the US. I know you had a video on this but it was way back.

    • @watchsymposium
      @watchsymposium  Před 4 lety +1

      "You recommend a local friend coming with me when I go around the Rolex stores?"
      Well, they would be able to get you one of the top 12 models, IF - and that's a massive IF - you were to stumble upon one. That said, the card would be registered to the local, and be sent to their address within a month. And the local would have to wait a full year before being able to get another top 12 model. So, it's super messy to say the least.
      This is the place for vintage though - visitors don't have to pay tax.

      @@watchsymposium Buckley Dials are named after collector John Buckley! A true Buckley dial must be: Painted black,champagne or white roman markers on white, black, blue or the very rare grey background! Black or white Buckley hands make the look complete! These dials were available on non quickset models from the mid 1970's to the quickset models of the 1980's. These were the very first "exotic" datejust dials and laid the groundwork for the later:
      Applied small roman dial
      Applied big roman dial
      Pyramid big roman dial
      First generation jubilee dial, also known as the potato chip dial.

    AD’s selling steel sports models to locals is imo happening in the USA 🇺🇸 right now!! They keep the “good “ stuff in the back room vault and only take them out for their customers who have purchased from them already. My Rolex rep practically told me as much. In the end it comes down to the fact that they can sell to who they want to.

      Bubble hasn’t burst, but it supposedly is a little riskier now buying certain models with intentions of immediately flipping it, the markup isn’t as high on some websites.

    • @SHONUFF772

      Ben Pollard correct- the inflated prices have dropped and slightly corrected. However prices are STILL unreasonably high. Daytona and Skydweller are still through the roof and the ss models are still NEVER on display and still command a premium. They just simply reached a ridiculous high with the inevitable drop. When I can walk into AD and get at least ONE ss model Rolex at retail in the display window- I’ll know the bubble has burst for the most part (excluding the ever elusive Daytona)

  • @68wrko
    @68wrko Před 4 lety

    Color dials on day/date seem passé, just me. I can see why the AD's have all the same type of watches available for sale. Just kind of bland. If you like that line of Rolex, you in luck with a purchase. But, those stainless steel sports you mention are timeless investments. Hard to buy in major market AD shops.
