🍺 What's your favorite pub food?
A crispy chicken wrap with a Shirley temple (Non-alcoholic.) I love going to my local pub there food is amazing!
Cocktails 😂
I definitely like to go to a pub and order fish and chips but I also love having a soup of the day in the afternoon and look at the specials but I also love to go for a burger and chips the pub is always very comforting and gives me a sense of home so if you are on holiday it is definitely the perfect place to go on a night out
@@nyamate4205 Lol
Nothing will ever beat a carvery the roast potatoes at the pub near me are delicious and so crispy
I think a tavern has boarding rooms where you would stay overnight till you can continue your travels. Also, there are pubs that will only serve drinks and snacks, the one you're in that's serves hot food is a gastro-pub.
That's an inn you're talking about
@@MattGDesign an Inn is a tavern that has a licence to have lodging guests
@@michw3755 Which implies that a tavern doesn’t always have lodging guests. In which case it’s the same thing as a pub, isn’t it?
eh it’s just a debate on semantics I guess, I call it whatever fits the vibe of the place. it’s mostly about ambience for me as someone not from the UK who doesn’t get caught up in those things. cool names though!
@@michw3755 I did a bit of reading, and this is how I understand it. First of all taverns are a thing of the past. When they did exist, the distinctions were a matter of emphasis. Pubs served mostly ale and beer, sometimes other drinks, and had no lodging. Taverns were places that served wine and fancy food; they may or may not have lodging. And inns provided lodging; and may or may not have served food.
The Red Lion, as others have mentioned is a chain of pubs. They're considered good, but pricey, and not how I see a real pub. Try local pubs, tucked away in little villages. Usually with whimsical names like "The Wig and Quill" or "The Hen and Bucket" that kinda thing. *Those* are where you'll find the best food, and a fantastic friendly atmosphere!
Red Lion is just a very common pub name, not a chain
Though beware you don’t end up in a Spoons 🤭
@@M1nn0w can't beat a spoons
@@MattGDesign yes, but there are some amazing ones in places like henley. normally places near rivers have pubs with amazing views and food
We have tye talisman the gwesty and the willow tree
Looks like you possibly went to a Gastro pub. One that focuses on creative artesinal food prepared on site to a high standard. With a price tag to match!
pub food for me means big portions of comfort food at affordable prices. it’s not dainty or michelin star worthy all of the time, but there’s something so nice about eating chunky chips dipped in gravy in a place where you can play cards and drink
You were right with your assumption that pubs only sell drinks. It's only since the 80s when the 'gastro pub' was invented that food has been readily available in public houses. Nowadays you will find it hard to find a pub that doesn't do food especially in the countryside. People do not drink drive these days so you can't have somewhere in the middle of nowhere that only sells drinks.
There's both pubs that are only drinks and some that gastro-pubs, plus it does depend on the pub in terms of what you get for food. Ones in the country side of villages tend to be more homemade homely or posher food, while you tend to get pub chains in more built up areas.
watching all your videos makes me want to travel to England, and try all sorts of dishes
Obscure British driving game: "pub cricket". The objective is to spot pubs. Points are scored based on how many legs the name of the pub has. Lions have 4 legs, so "the red lion" is worth 4 points.
A bit weird, but a silly way to pass a long journey.
My family has a variant where we use the signs instead and do it by arms and legs
What if the name of the pub isn’t something that has legs? My friend works at a place called Legends, so if I spotted that, what would I get?
@@mmilcz833 Nothing
@@RenCarl1sle oh well that’s a bummer lol
@@mmilcz833 No legs, no points. Spotting that pub is worth zero.
Theres like 3 levels, most pubs either only have pork scratchings and peanuts or have a specific pub lunch where you dont really get a choice (usually a Sunday dinner type thing) and then theres pubs that are almost restaurant like and have lots of food. You cant really know whats what until you go in. Also it is quite tavern like but a tavern has a place to stay the night.
I grew up in a small city and we have pub's, also called a public house. Beer with fish and chips they also have special soups and great bread. My favorite pub is an old building where they have leather couches and chandeliers above the tables. They also have open mic poetry night, it's called a beer, dinner and poetry reading. I use to read my poetry there on the weekends. 👍😁 I live in California. An Irish family runs the pub. They have Irish food and drinks.
I live in england and i didnt even kno pub was short if public house 💀
Pub food is the ultimate comfort food. It’s good classic British food simply done, and the atmosphere is cosy and familiar. It all just feels nostalgic and homely. Nothing like going for a long walking and ending it on a pub lunch
We don't really use tavern as much. I think you can rent a room in a tavern but there pretty much a thing of the past. Next time you visit pop up to Scotland for a different kind of beauty.
I felt that so much cause of the skyrim reference 😂
That Skyrim reference just earned you 10+ cool points 😃
In Canada we have lots of pubs, at least where I live. It’s probably because of its high population of people with British and Scottish heritage including myself!
I never considered that pub was short for something else. Thankyou for blowing my mind.
Also, if you find the right pub (usually not chains) then the food is amazinggggg like this. There was a pub back in my uni city that I still think about because the chips were just hhghggggggggg 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤 I miss it now.
*I learn tavern and pub from Movies, video games and Jeanelleats*
Great video! There's value common misconception here in the states that UK food is bad when, in fact, the cuisine has a lot to offer. Thank you for exploring it from an American perspective!
To answer your question, these days the differences between a pub and a tavern are not as clear, but in the Middle Ages, a pub was a local cultural center serving ale and food while a tavern served more "upper-class" drinks like wine.
the most popular pub name in England is the red lion!!
Pubs vary a lot. There's little local village pubs like the ones you see in Midsomer Murders that are often very traditional and cosy, full of the locals who know eachother. Then there's gastro-pubs like this one which are a bit fancier and serve decent food but are often quite expensive. Then there's chains like Weatherspoons (often just referred to as Spoons) which are a bit rough, serve cheap drinks and food and are often full of poor students or your friendly neighborhood alcoholic having their breakfast pint.
halloumi is my favorite cheese, it's so good especially when it's fried 😩
The real question is 'what is that green sauce and how is it clear?' I bet it tastes great
I was wondering what he was dipping in it. Looked like french toast sticks from back in school.
@@joo069 I think it was the halloumi chips they mentioned
@@nahi.03 You're definitely right. I just looked them up. Had never heard of Halloumi but I knew I wanted to try grilling cheese.
Maybe a mint or lemon sauce? I know mint pairs with halloumi but the mint jelly I've seen was darker green.
The food really looks good
Usually the UK's pub food is fantastic 😎
lol pubs are multi-purpose. You can go for a full meal, you can go to just drink and mess around, you can go for events like quizzes and stuff and you can go and watch football. It kinda depends on time of day and what each pub specialises in.
Canada's bar culture was all about drinking and maybe cheap cheese sandwiches to prove they served food at certain hours, but pub culture more or less got imported here in the 80s, roughly around the time pubs in the motherland started upping their game as well, so we profited. Of course, a lot of our early ones were corporate places just capitalizing on a fad- call it the Anglophile version of Chili's, the Olive Garden or maybe Chi Chi's, for those who remember that. I remember one called The Pawnbroker's Daughter. Others always involved words like Friar and Firkin. Sometimes it just seemed like a ploy to corner the narrowing Fish and Chip market and drive corner fish places out of business.
Yeah, a tavern is basically another name for a pub. The food you generally get is mainly comfort food, and traditional basics; currys, burgers, shepherds and cottage pies, sandwiches, and all day breakfasts. Great, now I'm hungry again.
Once upon a time they would not often have served good or as varied food, but I think they always served food. In villages they would be the only place outside the home, and in coaching towns at least one would also be an inn.
Hitchhikers guide? That is such an epic film, if you haven't read the book series? Think about it. The books are so much more involved. And just plain funny. Shaun of the dead, introduced me to Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Two very talented actors. Both films are fun, adventurous films. 🥰 You've got great taste in films. 😉
I love your vids, especially the UK ones!
I love The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie!
I would love to try that spinach and goat cheese pie! The veg on that plate 😍😍😍. It's so exciting to find out that things are not always what we presume them to be.
We have pubs and gastro pubs here in the US too. Usually pubs are bar snacks like nachos and cheese fries etc etc and gastropubs have higher end artisanal food. That's what it looks like you have here, but I could be wrong, either way looks delicious
Pubs have food. Taverns sometimes have rooms to stay in.
Okay that’s looks literally amazing
I miss England so much and going to little country pubs, there's nothing quite like sitting in front of a roaring firer eating and drinking local produce.
These are all bite sized foods! And I love these!
Here in the UK a tavern/Inn is a public house that also has rooms you can rent.
I feel like ur getting closer to my house everyday help
Ooo Pub food is great. 👍
Gosh, this all looks delicious!
Pub grub can be some awesome comfort food
In Australia we have fantastic food at our local pub.
The US has amazing "pubs". Most taverns in US serve full menus & often have amazing hamburgers & finger foods.
There are food pubs like one near my grandparents, The White Lion, but there are also just drinking pubs like the one near me, The Elephant and Castle. Although there are probably 1000 pubs with those names, so I don't know why I gave them.
@Jeanelleats, even in the USA, Pubs aren't dive bars. They are places with nice food and drink as well. A dive is another entity.
Fun fact: there are over 600 pubs called The Red Lion in the UK.
U said the magic word…”skyrim”
Tbh the smaller the town the nicer the food! Also you do get pubs where you can only get drinks
This looks very delicious.I can’t wait to go to the pub and taste it.
The nearest pub to me is just a second walk away never been there but yes there’s lots of fights police literally everyday except sunday
YAY SKYRIM. A woman of culture.
The red lion is the most common name for a pub in the uk
Certainly needs to visit those pubs everyday. Previously I do start off around 2.30 pm and ends at 10 at night. After spending that much time in a pub it would serve some sort of food to carry us over dinner . The list wouldn't be large or r extensive but rather honey type.
They make such a cute couple :)
In Australia a tavern is like a pub but a bit less casual
I live in England honestly never knew pub was short for public house.
You should try out a Wetherspoons on your travels 🤣🤣🤣
Wetherspoons is awful
This was informative! I'm in MI,USA and I thought pubs were dive bar style establishments lol
Whitebait is my go to pub grub!
I love your UK videos
well I love all your videos but I really really enjoy these
Beautiful food ❤ you are what you eat. 😋
I mean a pub is an ale house but you’ve been to a gastro pub that serves food as well as alcohol, before you leave the UK go to a real british pub and have a ball there🥳
That food looks amazing! Wish I could visit Europe again.
Hi! Jeanelle! I wated to thank you for your optimistic, enthusiastic exploratory food channel and wish you Happy New Year! Writing from a Greek island- come visit I think you will have fun.We have tavernas and they are like family restaurants, but a bit different from where you are visiting now. Long time since I had U.K. pub food where you are -time for some exploring. Wondering if some of the cooks are greek since they are serving haloumi chips? Wishing you an amazing year, vibrant health and all the best
Looks great !
that looks so fancy
A carvery. Or pie and mash.
If someone said tavern to me I would think of a dive bar.
I am British.
Also that food doesn’t look the best. They are a lot better pubs with better food then this one.
Obviously, they don't know the difference
Depends which pub you go to
I’m British and didn’t even know a pub stood for public house 😶
Totally thought a pub was a bar too
Oof I love hearty pub food
So a pub is similar to BJ's or Applebee's (Not in terms of quality, but that it has a restaurant that serves food and has a bar that serves alcohol).
Me being a Louis Tomlinson and 1d fan i always thoughr whej he went to Pub means a club where only alcohol is served but now I know british ppl call public house as pub lmao
Hitchhikers Guide to Galaxy " I'm British, and I know how to queue"😂😂😂❤
Interesting. Pubs in canada are the same.
Love the Skyrim reference
i only knew what a pub was from my favorite book the war that saved my life
ada(the main character) has a a mam that works in one.
What you went to is not a standard pub. It's a 'gastropub' or sometimes called a 'Bar/Kitchen' (a cozy restaurant where alcohol serves a huge part).
Standard pubs don't have anything but a deep fryer (and maybe a grill). Everything else they may offer is microwaved.
You can tell whether it's a standard pub or not from the prices. If it's less than £10 for a meal, you're in for some microwave food.
You will not get anything like what you got from a standard pub.
Those fries 🤤🤤🤤🤤
Is that lacock? Such a beautiful village
Pub nachos!
Indeed
They should go to spoons lol
Dam that looks good 👍
Didn't expect to hear Skyrim here of all places. What race did you play as?
YUM!
100% if you’re visiting UK, eat in pubs. Not ‘town pubs’, which are the sports bar type, and not chain pubs like whetherspoons. Gastropubs. Look for pubs with lots of dining space and look at the menu online. Some are absolutely amazing! They’re also child and dog friendly.
We don’t say tavern. That’s out of Harry Potter or some medieval movie.
A tavern in the United States means it is a bar that only sells beer and wine, no hard alcohol at all. I know this because we have a family bar that was named with tavern at the end. We ended up getting a liquor licenses many year later and we decided to keep the name even though we now serve hard liquor. I'm assuming it is different in the UK..
To elaborate even further on my last comment, for me pub food is a bottle of beer with a cigarette butt floating in it.
Yes
of course a red lion lol
You went to a Gastro pub I think
This is a chain, not a small pub xD
It's called cottage
Your lucky you didn’t go to a weatherspoons lol
Can you try samosa pls
That is a really good idea!!!
I love samosas!
I know they are the best
